R211 - The delivery of New York City's newest Subway Train from Kawasaki

On June 28, 2021 , the first 2 cars of the R211 Contract , named the R211A, arrived in the New York Metro area . These cars were wrapped in a black tarp to prevent any damage to the cars prior to its acceptance into NYC Transit.
These cars first arrived from the Kawasaki Plant in Nebraska to a special staging area in New Jersey.
Once granted permission the cars would be transported over the Goethals Bridge, Staten Island Expressway and into Brooklyn via the Verrazano Bridge . Upon arriving into Brooklyn, the cars were transported to a special staging area near 2nd Avenue which connects to the NYC Subway. These cars were then unloaded and touched rail of the NYC Subway. As of 2:30 AM on June 29, 2021 , The first R211 car has hit NYC Subway property.

Variety! Just like the city of New York, so many styles. Long live the SMEE era from 1948 through 1989 rolling stock of NYC subway cars. American Car Foundry, St. Louis, and Budd models R-10 through R-46. The 62’s and 68’s although of the smee technology were made by Kawasaki and were a different class of subway cars. The St. Louis, American Car Foundry, and Budd we’re all American. R-1 Through R-46 were American made subway cars.

This is something to celebrate! Kudos to Mr. Railfan for snagging this historic footage. I was wondering what those blue boxy things were. Without watching this I would never have learned they go together to create a trailer-to-track ramp. Of course, I always find it ironic that our rolling stock is not delivered by rail. I'm quite confident they did not use tractor trailers in the old days.

By then, enough R211's would be in service so they can no longer need to use the R46's during the overnight hours. Coney Island is getting the Option Order cars for Astoria and Crosstown CBTC.

Here is the list of corridors slated for CBTC (Under the 2020-2024 Capital Plan): - 63rd Street (21st Street-Queensbridge to 57th Street-6th Avenue) - 8th Avenue (South of 59th Street to High Street) - Astoria (Ditmars Boulevard to 57th Street-7th Avenue) - Crosstown (Court Square to Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets) - Fulton Street (Jay Street-MetroTech to Euclid Avenue) - Lexington Avenue (149th Street-Grand Concourse to Nevins Street) - Queens Boulevard East (Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike to Jamaica-179th Street/Jamaica Center)

Excellent and top-notch coverage. I am glad that after all of the delays, the R211's are beginning to take their presence in New York City. Some notes about the Base Order. Their going to 207th/Pitkin for (A)(C) service. The MTA want's to begin testing CBTC on the 8th Avenue Line by November 2023 (Late Nights). Looking ahead, a portion of the Option Order cars are going to 207th/Pitkin to have spares, Coney Island for (G)(N)(Q)(W) lines, and East New York for (L) service. As the R211 order is progressing, the R262's would have been awarded and the replacements for the R68's would be in the works. For delivery to Concourse/Coney Island. With all of that said, I would not expect the 30-day acceptance testing to take place till 2nd Quarter 2022.

Especially when the Open Gang-Way sets are being tested. Of which I can see them going to the (A), not the (E) like people are fantasizing about. I hope the TA does get the Option Orders funded by the time delivery commences with the production cars.

The R262s are released the R62/as for the A devison s. Not the R68/as . The R211s are replacing the R44s R46s only on the B decisions. The R68/as are gonna be here a lot longer .

Now here is something probably few are aware. The MTA has no plans (as of 2013) to order subway cars for the 2030-2034 Capital Plan. Meaning whatever cars that will replace the R68/A's will be funded from the 2025-2029 Capital Plan. As well as R262 Option Order II.

The R211s on base order confirmed by MTA will be going to the (A) (C) (S). The R211s after the (A) and (C) lines will go to lines that would go: Either (B) and (D) or (E) (F) (R). Note: Rumors had said that R211s are going to lines with CBTC equipment. R211s have CBTC equipped on the NYC Subway's B Division and they would most likely go to lines with High Ridership and CBTC. The R211s will replace aging R46. The R46 would probably retire in 2025.

There's a winch and motor near the truck cab. It's still attached with a chain from that point until it's fully om the rails. Then the little blue Zephyr comes and moves it away.

@Anthony Z You are cutting it too close. More like 10-15 years from now. Once the MTA crafts up the 2025-2029 Capital Plan in the coming years, more information will come out. Understand and research trends from prior NTT orders and you'll see the trajectory in motion. Don't expect the R46 retirement to commence till late-2022, early 2023. One detail people are leaving out, the aggressive delivery schedule calls for 22 cars a month. Meaning two sets will likely enter service at a time. Once they have four to six sets in service, a set of R46's will then be retired.

Yes, they are getting the R211 since they have CBTC. So R211s are going to lines with CBTC and High Ridership. That is what rumors are saying.
