R36S Unboxing & First Impressions

First of I have to admit that I laughed when you started with saying "This is something I dislike already, why are are you telling me the name of the console?" 😂 Euhm what is that any different from booting the Xbox 360, XBOX ONE, PS3, Wii, Switch etc?😂😉 Nice video and first personal impression 😊👍🏽. I have both the purple and orange one (my wife wanted the orange one), and I also thought WHUT? When she picked that color, but it's not to bad actually in real life.😊 I personally don't use it for the roms and such but I'm using it for development, and testing my own games and apps for portability. I'm currently working on some major (software and hardware support) improvements for the R36S, but do want to give some possible new buyers some tips if they want to get one: - First of: DITCH THE "FREE" SD-CARDS! ASAP! They are nothing but 'ticking-time-bombs'. It's not a matter IF they will fail/corrupt but WHEN (no joke), just check the internet, the forums are full with these same warnings. I have experienced the same issues with all 6 cards I tested from these machines. [DO NOT throw it away though, you might need to backup the boot partition of it for your display to work after installing the latest ArkOS on a new card] - Due to that: Don't even bother buying one with more storage. Just get the cheapest deal with the lowest storage option to save a few bucks and buy a decent storage card from Samsung, Sandisk etc. There is a compatibility list online which you can find by just googling "R36S Sd card compatibility list" - Once you have your new SD-Card install the latest ArkOS by downloading it directly from the original source. This is a github page which also has very clear instructions. Lastly: These units (currently) can come with 4 different types of LCD panels, and depending on which one you have received you might need to copy some additional files. If your unit will stay with a black screen after updating ArkOS or give white stripes for example just google "AeolusUX R36S-DTB" and try one of the other screen files (put in your boot partition). For those being misled by the box or advertisements: These devices DO NOT have either WiFi or Bluetooth build in! You CAN get wifi to work for example, but you will need a very specific wifi adapter and USB-C to USB-A adapter to get it to work. The Chipset which does work for sure is the RTL8188EU. However when trying to buy them you sellers often only list RTL8188 as chipset. And there is also a chipset version which does not work by default from this family (RTL8188FTV). So keep that in mind😊 Hope this information helped you or some of your viewers 😊👍🏽

@@JaviPlayRetro Sorry, I totally missed your reply, didn't got an email notification 🤷🏽‍♀ Well the games development will take quite some time until they are done, because those are basically 'spare time projects', those are basically RPG like games (for example like Pokemon etc). Designed to run on nearly all platforms including pc etc, but with the main focus on and playability considerations aimed at devices like these 😊 I'm currently like (briefly) mentioned earlier working on some massive ArkOS add-ons/upgrades which can be installed as additional program(s), and all without the use having to know (or learn) anything about Linux. I'm making it so that it gives an 'ease-of-use-experiance' as close as possible to what most gamers are used to on a Windows pc. I don't want to disclose too much yet, but it for example includes MUCH better usb stick management, support for even mounting multiple usb sticks or partitions at the same time, support for quite a a lot more network cards/usb sticks, support for more (external) controllers, easy system management and advanced system tweaks, network tools and much more. If you like (and I'll do my best not to forget it), I can post/reply another message here once the first version is ready for release?😊 I'm hoping that the toolset I'm working on will enable much more features for many users wanting to get even more out of their R36S/R36H😊

This is my first retro handheld device and i gotta say, for the price i paid, im pretty over the moon. I get all its shortcomings like the buttons not feeling the best, not the greatest performance. But god damn has this device got me seriously interested in this scene.

I got this and i enjoy it more than my anbernic 405v. The anbernic is awful top heavy and clunky. I love how this can do so much for how cheap it is and how light it is.

Amazing for the price. However I feel the best is yet to come. I think later in 2024 we'll see one of these ultra budgets with enough chipset performance to do N64/Dreamcast smoothly and perhaps even Gamecube properly. It is a teeeeeeny bit short of that but I think we're 12 months away tops from a model with a few of the R36S issued resolved and say 50 percent more performance for sub $50. Then I'm in. The XU-10 is very close with better memory than the R36S but still not quite there.

i actually saw the R36s scrolling through ali express the other day, and wondered if the analog sticks would be uncomfortable after playing for an hour or so where theres nothing for your palm to rest on. Playing Ps2 games in that form factor would be super cool too.

I recently bought the Orange one, and quickly sold it. I recorded some materials for it, and got rid of it. Yeah, its not bad for the price, but there was just so many things i disliked about it. The triggers in the back were a no-no for me! So freaking loud they are and ugly af. The placement of the joysticks being so far out is also something i didnt like about it. Nintendo 64 emulation is not there yet either. Only a few games run at 100%, the dpad and buttons are also terrible. The ABXY buttons are smaller than usual buttons, and for me, they just feel off. Dont even get me started on the dpad. That thing was ass too. The best thing about this device is the screen. That is forsure a great screen at this price. I cannot say anything bad about that. But when you compare this to the XU10, the build quality on that thing blows this out the water. And i also got that device for sub $50 bucks. Sorry, but i cannot recommend this device unless you are really struggling or getting it as a gift for someone. Not a daily, id recommend the XU10 instead.

I'll see If I pick one of those up. I knew coming into this that some of the buttons weren't great. So far, I like a few things about it, namely the screen, the speaker, dpad I actually find okay, I like the size of it too like it fits in my hands, also the feel of the plastic is actually good for $40 and of course ArkOS. But action buttons are tiny, shoulder button sounds are horrendous. Joysticks are awkward. No Wi-Fi built in is annoying (its says wifi on the box). Also, what's up with the e-waste sticker?!?!! Game Consoie ?

It looks good on paper but the games that actually need the analogs, like n64 (full fledged) or ps2 emulation, the power just isn't there. Also i know the price is cheap, but the design is stupid ugly.
