*NOTE*: We have issued a correction to the DOTA2 charts in the article. The original baseline 1700 results for DOTA 2 read 167FPS, which was actually a framerate number from one of our 7700K passes (averaged later) -- so a typographical error. Fortunately, it does not impact tone of content or performance for either CPU in streaming, which is what we were interested in. Just the baseline 1700 number has changed, nothing else. This means that the 1700 is actually much further behind Intel than originally thought in baseline performance, but also means that the 1700 doesn't fall as far as thought in the streaming tests (streaming results, again, are unchanged). Article here: www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2993-amd-1700-vs-intel-7700k-for-game-streaming/ You might also like Vega undervolting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYvOl4x6jNyibdU Plenty more testing in the pipes, as always. Some of those charts (FPS charts) should say "framerate" for the X axis, not "percent of frames." That's pretty obvious, though.

Kinda disappointed you didn't OC and optimized the R7, not to rub the defeat in Intels face but just to see how good numbers you could get. For one that is known for being stringent about testing methodology this video (and article) seems a bit rushed without the usual level of attention to such important details.

"A bit rushed" -- this is a completely new test for us. We've only just started doing streaming benchmarks. "Rushed" is pretty dismissive of the behind-the-scenes time requirements to put just the testing together, work through bad data, re-test things for certainty, execute multiple iterations. The 1700 simply didn't need an OC. It's clear what's going on. We had plenty of other work to do with this testing, and will continue to expand going forward. Remember that a lot more happens than what you're seeing on the screen.

That can also be felt when working with multiple desktops and multitasking as well. Everything feels butter smooth, even things technically in the background. I was not used to that coming from a 4790k, but man does it feel good. It feels like I upgraded from the cheap processor to the luxury processor... wtf is going on with the CPU market? I am using a 1700x at stock, plan to overclock later when I could use the performance, as a treat I am saving for later. Also, the bios was cutting edge when I got the board, so overclocking wasn't very great anyway. Not that I need it.

So AMD R7 crushes Intel i7 in streaming. No surprise there. What is really telling is that it is a stock R7 1700. That means 3GHz base clock and 3.7GHz boost. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I heard anyone who have bought a R7 1700 that hasn't OCed it to at least 3.8GHz (all cores) so thall just make the numbers even worse for Intel. On top of that, an R7 has a lot of headroom to prioritize the OBS for possibly even better result.

As others have said you will generally get about 3.8ghz even using the stock cooler. Some with a golden chip can even get a little higher due to being able to use lower vcore voltages. If this is not possible for you, then you either have bad airflow through the case or some issue with cooler mounting/cooling paste.

AMD is the future. More cores, more threads and infinite fabric with almost 100% scaling. Intel ripped consumers off for too long and held back innovation by years through greed on the back of lacking competition. Their new processors running on the X299 chipset are an absolute ripoff and a testament to just how out of touch they are.
@DeLawrence977 жыл бұрын
Greatsaiyanman I agree with you mate, but can you really blame Intel? I mean, it's a company, not a charity service. They were looking for maximum profit, even if that meant ripping off customers. They were bascially kings of the market during these years and fed us with mainstream quad cores that existed since 2008/2009 if IIRC. Now that AMD is back and threatening, hell, managing, to dethrone intel, also puts them in a tight spot.
@neavo84217 жыл бұрын
Oh look the "They are a company not a charity" card gets played in hopes that absolves companies of immoral and unethical behavior. There used to be a time where shame was associated with greed.
@DeLawrence977 жыл бұрын
Neavo I am not saying it absolves them, although I made it sound like it(my bad). I am just syaing this from the company's perspective. We're talking CPUs here...there was really no alternative...so Intel was free to charge whatever the fuck they wanted for their products. I do not endorse their strategy, but I can't point the finger either. I was, am and always will be the kind of consumer that buys and recommends things solely on price/performance/quality criteria, regardless of manufacturer. As of July 2017...I think Ryzen( 1600 & 1700) is the way to go regardless of what you do with your PC. Intel has now become the exception with Pentium G4560(or sth like that) for ultra low end and i7 7700k if you're running 144Hz with a less powerful GPU. i5s are dead to me...i would consider them SH if you have the Pentium platform...although you would arguably find SH i7s for a little extra.(which would be worth it)
@mduckernz7 жыл бұрын
LaruKun I'd give blame roughly 50-50. AMD has not been able to hire the people it needs after all of Intel's anticompetitive crimes, some of which are _still_ ongoing (unpaid fines, manipulation), which caused a profit shortfall over a long period of time, to the point they had to sell their fab (GF). However, some blame must also be apportioned to AMD since they made poor decisions causing them to waste what money they did have on inferior hardware designs. How much of this is due to them not being able to hire the people it needs is up for debate. I'm not familiar enough with the details - honestly, I think very few would be to a sufficient degree.

@spicywaffles48207 жыл бұрын
That's the main reason to do it. If the R5 1600 can beat the i7 7700K at a lower price point, there is no reason to spend on an i7 or an R7 if what you want is to stream games.
@Sn1p1ngGuy1177 жыл бұрын
He should have tested the 1700x instead of the 1700 as the 1700x is same price as the 7700k. Also he could have OC the 1700 as he OC the Intel. The 1600x is better choice for gamers (infact it beats the 1800x in most games), the 1700 better choice for streamer/rendering. The 1600 stock will prob beat or tie the 1700 in streaming due to clock speeds but OC the 1700 wins.
@spicywaffles48207 жыл бұрын
Streaming is not about clock speeds, but more about threads. If the 1600 can beat the 7700K, and tie (or almost tie) the 1700, the 1600 is clearly a better buy.

I agree the ryzen can stream at better presets and such, and it should do to 8 cores 16 threads. My issue is people saying that the 7700k is bad for streaming is def not the case. I stream all kinds of games, and newer titles. I do not have issues. I just feel ryzen is ment for workstation users. People who make videos daily, and someone who does it full time. For the avg gamer who does occasional streaming, and especially 120+ hz the 7700k is the best choice.
@Agyapas977 жыл бұрын
The 7700k is unsuitable for streaming for OUT OF THE BOX settings; you need to set up CUSTOM settings to balance out what quality you want your viewers to watch & compensate for dropped frames & stuttering as the video demonstrates; you have to Compromise. For EACH DIFFERENT. Not to mention having other windows running in the background when streaming. You'll be fine if your viewers are content with the 720p 60 fps you deliver, or that you stream only one game.

One more nail in the coffin for intel.
@itstheweirdguy7 жыл бұрын
Intel isn't in a coffin! Just you wait buddy. The fact that AMD's cpus have more cores does not put intel in a coffin. It didn't put them in a coffin back when FX came out, and it won't now. Great time for game streamers to build a system with the ryzen chips, though! If Intel is smart they will get higher core count parts into their mainstream desktop platform (non-HEDT). If they can sneak a 6 physical core CPU into there AMD will start to lose relevance on this topic, but who knows what will happen, Intel will do whatever makes them the most money. And THAT, my friend, is why they are not in a coffin.
@M2orNot7 жыл бұрын
Clueless replies to this thread. It doesn't matter that AMD has more cores, what matters is that no matter what Intel does, if they don't adopt a non-monolithic architecture, AMD will crap out more processors with very similar performance at a much lower price than Intel does. It's not the performance or the core count that matters, it's the cost and ease of production. And AMD has steamrolled Intel for that generation on that front. The fact that these "glued together" quad cores can even come to 10% off Intel's best mainstream CPUs for gaming is a huge leap in performance. And judging by the amount of refinement that architecture can take, this might just be only the beginning.
@itstheweirdguy7 жыл бұрын
By "monolithic architecture", what exactly do you mean? Please go into more detail on that one. Anyways couldn't Intel just release new architecture, which I'm sure they are working on?
@M2orNot7 жыл бұрын
I'm not using buzzwords. That's the name. It means that they produce singular dies(i.e. for core i5s they produce 4 core dies and for Xeon processors anywhere from 4 to 28 core dies: a process that allows for little latency between cores but has exponentially high attrition in production) while AMD produces batches of cores that are "stitched" together with their Infinity Fabric, a cheaper and more efficient method. Not only that, but their dies are more efficient as far as thermals are concerned. This is beyond regular architecture, this is a whole different way of manufacturing and Intel used a version of it before on Core 2 Quads and Pentium Ds. Sure they could do something like that in the future but they don't have a technology to connect the separate cores with the same speed as Infinity Fabric yet. We'll have to wait for a few years for that. To respond to OP as well, this just evens out the market: it will take a lot of bad calls from Intel and brilliant calls from AMD for Intel to go bust.
@M2orNot7 жыл бұрын
Did you understand what I meant by "front"? I mean cost of manufacture of CPUs. That's where Intel got beaten and they don't have a response for the foreseeable future or, at least, haven't announced one. Kaby Lake was released January '17 and Ryzen got released on March. It has already started increasing the market share of AMD quite a bit considering the timespan and in fact, the R5 1600 has overtaken its competitor in market share: The i5 7600K. That advantage in production is not gonna change with Coffeelake or Cannonlake or Tigerlake. What comes after might just change things, though. For now, let's enjoy this change of balance for however long it lasts.

Give Me A Smile Probably because it was not necessary. In the conclusion, Steve said that Ryzen 7 offers better streaming performance out of the box. So that might mean no OC involved. Hell even on intel 7700k, it's not that easy to get a stable 4.9GHz for this kimd of heavy workloads, so that widens the gap even more.
@GamersNexus7 жыл бұрын
1: Time. We do not have an infinite amount of it, but we do take contract work. 2: It wasn't needed. The goal was to deliver 100% of frames to the stream, which the 1700 did stock. The 7700K was trying to catch up to the 1700, not the other way around.

Im not trying to defend Intel here... but if you have an Intel 4cores (or 4C/8T)CPU, I think the best way to stream is with Nvidia Encoder. It doesnt look as good as Fast CPU encoding, but it still look decent, especially at 10mbps. And it doesnt impact performance too much.
@ChriAsh6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't affect performance at all in my experience. But, based on LTT's video, and my own experience, it does look much worse.
@spapadillion7 жыл бұрын
A much more appropriate testing methodology (in my opinion) would be to test how high you can set the software encoding preset before encountering dropped frames at 1080P/60FPS on the two CPUs and in a variety of games using the 6000kB/s maximum upload limit that Twitch currently allows as this is quickly becoming the new standard for mid-high end streams going forward. I feel that this would give the viewer a much clearer picture as to what each CPU is capable of in real-world scenarios versus just staring in awe at the huge pile of dropped frames upon which Intel is sitting using your current methods. I love and respect the channel, watch and like almost every single video, and applaud you all for your attempt to address this topic even tho it was clearly outside your comfort zone. Hopefully we'll see more relevant streaming-related content in the future once you've gained (or bring in someone with) a bit more experience in the field.

Would've been nice to see the Ryzen system with an overclock dialed in to see if performance improve in a meaningful way in this scenario. The new intro is so badass, love it! Amazing job! I feel like those straw polls were kind of skewed to what people wanted to see rather than what they actually use. I know 720p 60fps 3000kbps would be boring because both cpus could probably handle it fine, but those are much more realistic settings. Above 720p is kind of useless because there are many more people that watch in a window than fullscreen, and above 3000kbps really limits your audience (unless you have quality options)
@parasxarakis7 жыл бұрын
idk about the bitrate but most streamers (not the guys that flood twitch playing lol and having average 15 viewers) do use 1080p and variable quality settings
@azlastor7 жыл бұрын
CPU FPS benchmarks are skewed because most people get GPU bottlenecked or Refresh Rate bottlenecked... Still one can get the idea that one CPU can achieve higher FPS when all bottlenecks are removed (however unrealistic and unpractical that may be). And youtube and media all widely regard 7700k as the best gaming processor when it's in most cases totally pointless. I don't see how this is different, actually I find this scenario far more likely than a 7700k being the bottleneck in any game.
@Algorythm447 жыл бұрын
If they are on twitch and have quality options it's either because they have partner or they are in the "top whatever number of streamers" or however twitch chooses you to get options. And if they have options sure stream at those bitrates because people can just turn the quality back down and they won't lose audience but for the majority of people they don't have quality options and they should stick to reasonable bitrates to get more viewers. I could easily stream at 6000kbps no issues but the very few viewers I do get wouldn't be able to watch so I stream at 3000kbps and it looks just as good and they can watch, it's a win-win

Great video! Would be nice if you guys also tested r7 1700 with h264 vs i7 7700k with NVENC, and see how well they hold over 60fps in CPU heavy titles(like GTA 5 for example), GPU heavy titles (maybe crysis 3), and competitive multiplayer games (like dota2, csgo, pubg, overwatch). The NVENC might require some fiddling to get the best performance (like disabling shadowplay recording, not using rescale feature on the "output" tab in OBS)
@marxman68967 жыл бұрын
Unless Twitch has changed things very recently, testing over 3.5k bitrate is pretty pointless since that's what Twitch servers bottleneck you at. I'm sure there are a lot of people with separate dedicated streaming rigs using 10k bitrate, but for all intents and purposes it doesn't do anything. Again, I could be wrong if Twitch has recently increased their bandwidth cap, but I haven't heard anything about that. This also doesn't apply to youtube which allows higher bitrates (possibly depends on your channel size? not 100% sure). If you stream to youtube exclusively and can utilize 10k bitrate, AND don't have a dedicated streaming PC, the Ryzen 1700 obviously crushes the 7700k. I don't feel like there are many people in that specific set of circumstances though. The vast majority of streamers do it casually, to Twitch, at 3.5k bitrate or below. These tests don't really reflect the results for the average streamer. They reflect the results of someone pushing the extremes of stream quality settings, which usually means they are either A) streaming professionally and should have a dedicated streaming PC, or B) are a large company (think E-sports groups) and should have a dedicated streaming PC. There just aren't many people encoding 10k bitrate and gaming on a single PC.

Gamers Nexus - while I understand your tests and absorb it accordingly - youre getting a bit salty about it. I know that the cap that applies to twitch doesnt apply to youtube - but its what they are used to as a baseline. Of course its the internet so no decorum can be had by anybody.
@marxman68967 жыл бұрын
A large majority of streamers do, though. I'm not saying your tests or results are invalid, I'm saying the results and parameters of your tests don't apply to the vast, vast majority of people. The average streamer is streaming: 1) To Twitch 2) At a bitrate between 2000 and 3500 3) At 720p30, 720p60, or 1080p30, depending on hardware and game Saying "This is the best CPU for streaming at 10k bitrate" is perfectly valid, it just doesn't really matter for most people. Either way, keep up the great content and I apologize if I came across as douchey, I just want to make it clear that while your testing is sound, it should be taken within context.

When I first installed my Ryzen 1700 (with 32GB of DDR4 and an R9 290X), not even overclocked, I tested some streams with Overwatch. Playing at 1080P 144Hz on mostly high and ultra settings I was able to stream 720P @ 60FPS with zero slowdown (my game FPS never dropped below like 135) and I was able to keep that even when I cranked down the render speed to LOW. This is kinda incredible and can REALLY help for people with non-partnered Twitch channels or low upload speed connections. I was always proud of my old FX 8320 which managed to do that same Overwatch stream but at 720P @ 45 on high render speed, but the Ryzen is just amazing.

7700k is a piece of junk, i choose to buy one over the 1700x, worst decision i ever made. 5% faster than my i5 3570k in gaming big deal.....but i lost out on everything else that an 8 core 16 thread can do. Oh well ill just wait for 7nm Zen in a few years and just suck it up.
@Skull21827 жыл бұрын
I feel like this is a lie. It's impossible to be only a 5% increase. The i5 3570k is 3.4 Ghz. The i7 7700k stocks at 4.2. Which means a literal 20% difference in gaming. The only complaint I have about it is how hot it can get.
@SavageArms3577 жыл бұрын
They both overclock to roughly the same performance. The 7700K would benefit from about 15% better IPC and slightly higher clocks, but the difference isn't really that noticeable in games unless you're on a high-refresh rate monitor (120Hz+)
@XseuguhX7 жыл бұрын
Especially since IPC and clock speed doesn't linearly increase framerate. He is probably GPU bottlenecked, like pretty much everyone is. That's why I hate the stupid CPU game benchmarks. The 5 frame difference you see when using a high end graphics card and running the game at 480p means nothing for the end user.

I would have suggested Mixer. FTL streaming specifically. Mixer, also known as Beam and recenly bought by microsoft. has a Nifty feature they call FTL, Faster than light. They made this when it was still beam, and before microsoft bought them. It's a entirely new protocol that, to my knowledge, only they have. It allows for sub-second delay between streamer and chat. That is how fast it is. In my testing i never saw it go over 1 second between what I did and what was seen on stream. This does come at a cost though. it is more resource heavy compared to regular streaming and you have no choice but to use OBS, but their modified version of OBS otherwise you cannot use FTL. But since it is more resource heavy I think it would be a better test. Great video as always! EDIT: I forgot to mention something important aswel. Weh nstreaming you have to consider the viewer. What is their download speed? You can stream at 6000, but not everyone can handle that. Personally irun at FTL minum stream requirements CPU Preset: Faster (has a more notable impact on stream than Bitrate,) Bitrate: 3500 Resolution: 1280 x 720 @ 60 Audio: 96 (yes this matters too, this adds onto your bitrate) In most cases streaming 1080p60 is overkill. the window you watch a stream at is 1280x720p. then again, this is a test so it is a really good test to do so. But i can guarantee that most streamers stream at the settings I previously mentioned. But this is basically lowering settings. which was mentioned. Personally i own the Ryzen 5 1600, I locked it at 3.7ghz.

I game and stream with a 3770k at 4.2ghz and have decent quality without adjusting process priority or affinity. base canvas is at 1920x1080 but i have it outputting 1280x720 30fps at 2800kbps bitrate, h.264 (x264 in OBS i think), veryfast CPU preset, keyframe interval to 2, and lower the audio bitrate quality a tiny bit. This makes playing + streaming feel WAY better and not sacrificing a whole lot of quality. Using the NDI plugin to send the OBS canvas to another computer over the network to act as a dedicated streaming PC would totally lessen the load though. I did a video myself on this, the plugin feature for this in OBS is really neat! (and easy...and free, no capture card needed).

Nice video GN! This really helps me to further justify my purchase of AMD this time around. I have been interested in streaming for a while now and I can now say confidently that I have a better CPU for that. Something I think that is worth mentioning also is the fact that where Ryzen has more cores, future titles that can take advantage of them will also perform better. I hate to think about what a game like that would do to the i7 streaming with it already struggling to provide good viewer experience out of the box.

I think testing streaming in Overwatch is a good idea. As a competitive player I'm streaming via iGPU (720@60) on my 4690k which results in good quality and - what is *really* important for a competitive player - less input lag (more frames, that's how engine works). I have to use higher bitrate than software streaming but like I said - input lag is really important. And as always - great video GN!
@Sn1p1ngGuy1177 жыл бұрын
720@60 on GPU encoding is not good quality. Even at high bitrates it wouldn't be great. Streaming vs recording is a huge difference also. Streaming requires much more resources and cannot fall behind & catch up and it will also be bottlenecked by bitrates (Twitch only allowed 4mbps) if you do 4mbps on streaming GPU encoding is meh quality there is much higher limit on records where 10mbps on gpu encode will look closer to 10mbps on cpu encode.
@mikolaj95597 жыл бұрын
I find my streams are good enough looking at 6mbps. Yes, it can't compare to pure software streaming but I'd rather have 8ms of input lag in Overwatch instead of having 40ms and less frames. And I'd say - with strong enough upload you can get really close to software streaming. It's best option for me atm. iGPU(Quicksync) or GPU(NVENC).

do you guys have any plans to do a follow up video on ryzen? to evaluate how it holds up once drivers, bioses and other issues has been worked on and matured? would be really interesting to see! :) also, you do a lot of production tests. which I can understand as the majority of your viewers are probably streamers and content creators as well as gamers. but it would be awesome to see how the CPUs and GPUs you test holds up in terms of CAD, Revit and other industrial 3D rendering tasks, for those of us who do both gaming and industrial design on our machines.
@daweitao26687 жыл бұрын
Would have been interesting to have seen an overclocked 1700 too. Most/many streamers will by savvy enough to overclock their 1700s so it would have been interesting to see how much of a difference that would make. Other potential games to test are CS:GO, Overwatch and PlayerUnknown's Battleground. That latter one is badly optimized and still in EA so would be interesting.

Gamers Nexus Very telling video. Thanks for this. As a streamer, I wouldn't know what the viewers are watching because I assume they are viewing 100% of the frames being delivered with the right amount of bitrate. At this point, it matters if you want your viewers to get the best quality (1700) or you just want the high frames (7700k). Fortunately, I have a secondary machine to stream out on, but if I had to use one machine for both gaming and streaming, Ryzen literally can't be beat! Ryzen impressed me with this test!
