Indrani Mukherjee is a vocalist from Kolkata, who performs khayal in the Kirana-Rampur style and thumri in Purab Ang. After training in the family she studied under gurus from Allahabad and Benares, and was selected as a scholar of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy. Bhairavi is often described as the ‘queen of ragas’. It takes its name from the Hindu goddess of destruction, and conjures versatile moods. To some it can evoke ‘awe, terror, and chaos’; to others ‘a pleasant sobering atmosphere of love and piety’. It is played at sunrise, or alternatively as the final piece in a concert. Understanding the raga in depth is crucial to Hindustani learning - bansuri master Rupak Kulkarni recounts the approach of his guru Hariprasad Chaurasia: “Guruji taught me Raag Bhairavi for five years. When I complained about the repetition, he said: ‘You have to practice Bhairavi until your last breath’. That is what made me realize what swarabhyas [the study of notes] means”.
It is based on the form SrgmPdnS - all swaras [notes] are komal [flattened] except Sa, Ma, and Pa, like the Western Phrygian scale or Carnatic Raga Hanumatodi. The vadi and samvadi [king and queen notes] are typically taken to be Ma and Sa. The raga commonly takes a versatile mishra (‘mixed’) form - all 12 notes are allowed, thus injecting some comparatively rare chromaticism into Hindustani music. Its flexibility is unmatched in the raga pantheon.

A thumri is nothing but a painting done on the canvas of sorrow. The more the 'layakari' or brush strokes, the more intense is the depiction of pain. These songs would be composed and performed by the 'tawaifs' or the courtesans pining for the attention and care of the overlord. Alternatively these have become love songs or songs of melancholia. I remember John Keats who wrote in his Ode on Melancholy, " In the very temple of Delight/ Veiled Melancholy has her sovereign shrine.." This is apt for thumri as it mellifluous and expresses the happiness of separation and dwelling in pain- "jao piya khusi se jao sautan ke dwar, aur hum jo jogan ke bhes pyare naina" ( Go my beloved to the house of the other desired/ For I will stay as a sage and in my eyes the love will stay. Thumri is pathos and ecstasy intertwined. Such is the power. I would recommend the listeners to listen another fantastic Thumri in the same raag Bhairav sung by Shobha Gurtu, " Saiyan Nikas Gayi Mein na Lari Thi.." The song is also sung by Kaushikiji. It is also mesmerizing.
