As usual you are at your Melodious Best and made my Sunday afternoon siesta a lot easier...😉 Although I have settled in Pune now but I was born and grew up in Baroda, the कलानगरी i.e. Cultural Capital of Gujarat. My Paternal home is still at Baroda right across the Royal Laxmi Vilas Palace of Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda.The Palace is one of the finest examples of Indo-Saracenic style of Architecture which is a confluence of Italian-Gothic and Mughal Architectural Style. When it was built, it was the costliest Palace in the entire Indian Subcontinent. I find myself lucky to have my paternal residence right across the iconic Palace where many Bollywood Movies were shot. Once upon a time, In the Royal Darbar Hall of Laxmi Vilas Palace you could hear the Thumri rendition of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan,the founder of Kirana/Kairana Gharana which if I am not wrong your family also belongs to. He would sing with his slow melodic development of the raga in Vilambit laya (slow tempo). It was the most characteristic aspect of his music.Also performed at this Palace his daughters Hirabai Badodekar and Saraswati Rane. I think your Grandmother took Music Lessons from Saraswati Rane. My father too was associated with Baroda Amateurs Dramatic Club and acted in many noted Marathi Nataks like संगीत सौभद्र, मत्स्यगंधा, मोरूची मावशी, Crime Passion, नटसम्राट, and last but not the least.... नृपावेगळा... The play on the life of Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad, the erstwhile Ruler of Baroda.

This raga is from the Carnatic music tradition. It was adapted into the Hindustani tradition. As for the thaat of this raga, the great Pandit V. N. Bhatkhande classified it as a complete thaat in itself, albeit not one of the ten principal thaats. Hope this helps.

Dear Sawani ji, Thanks for wonderful rendition of Charukeshi with your grandma's composition. Indeed it is breathtaking to listen you as always. But you have almost sung Charukeshi like Basant Mukhari in this case. Fragrance of Charukeshi is having very different shade than of Basant Mukhari. Moreover Charukeshi is Signature of Devotional Garba and Dandiya Raas for so many centuries in Gujarat. Though name of this melody is not given as Charukeshi by folk people. It is as similar as Maand of Rajasthan folk culture. So I don't agree that Charukeshi is South Indian Raga. 😊🙏 In North indian classical music, the most delicate portrait of Charukeshi is given by Amzad Ali Khan duet with L Subramaniam on Violin. Not even Ravishankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Nikhil Benarjee or Shiv Kumar Sharna or even Hariprasad Chaurasia come close to this portrait while expressing Charukeshi.

Thanks...Rishabh makes a huge difference in both Charukeshi and Basantmukhari.. so there is no point in comparing. Also, try to dig deeper. You will find the origin. Also, every artist has his or her own perspective of a raga, its reflections and shade. As long as you keep the grammar correct, abide by the rules, you are free to take yr own flight. Thats the very magic of Indian classical music.

Can you express Charukeshi without using Rishabh? Also any form of Classical music is relatively new phenomenon on planet as long as history of folk music is concerned. Classical musicians always learn from folk music and try to invent new Raga or composition. But not vice versa.

My dear Sawani ji, I am already learning from you since so many years. We may not agree to each and every aspect of music, that does not mean that our relationship has changed. It is forever. Well, folk music is mother of all classical forms of music. It is celebration of festivity, life colors of emotions and various relationships of human with nature. Classical music always remain a little child of folk music, though now child has grown up. But mother is always mother, nobody can deny the original relationship. Regarding Charukeshi, feel the emotions of Charukeshi and try to sing without Rishabh.😊😊 You can do this, I am sure for your creative intelligence.
