"It rained last night
Lightning played over Maleer
It rained last night."
In the oral traditions of Shah Latif, just the very mention of thunder and lighting in the time of the night conjures up the landscape of the legend of Marui. Kidnapped by the king of Umarkot, Marui is locked in his fortress. Rejecting his entreaties and threats, and resolutely unentranced by the luxuries and riches he offers her, Marui yearns to return to her homeland Maleer, to the frugal and simple lives of her Rabari kin, the Maroos.
Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, the 18th century Sindhi Sufi poet, speaks in the voice of Marui in this song to signal a return to the place of one's origins, a yearning for an un-entangled simplicity, and the honouring of a vow long-since made to our one true Beloved.

Mooralala Marwada belongs to a lineage of Meghwal singers, who migrated from Rajasthan to Kutch about 300 to 400 years ago. Now settled in the village of Khadeer in Kutch, Mooralala says he’s an 11th generation singer, and that his ‘santaar’ (tambura) must be at least 130 years old! When he first heard the sound of the tambura, he recalls that he was 8 years old, and he was so enchanted, he couldn’t sleep! Currently his 12-year-old daughter Nandini, learns from and sings with him. He moves with ease between nirguni bhajans, traditional folk songs and Sufiana kalaam. Contact Mooralala at +91-87585-51661
