I always carry one of these. They are not meant for extended use or for sleeping in, except in emergency. But in unpleasant conditions if there's no other shelter, it's a great morale booster to get out of the weather for a few minutes for a cup of tea and a sticky bun ( other beverages and snacks are available ). I have had to use mine once as an emergency shelter after I fell on a remote part pf the West Highland Way and almost completely severed a finger. I was able to shelter in it with my rucksack taking the place of a second person at the other end of the bag while I waited for the helicopter . Being vividly obvious as it's ORANGE it was easy for the crew to locate me.

What you're calling "lips" around the bottom edge are waterproof seats; they're one of the advertised features.

Thanks so much! Like my son says you should always have some sort of shelter with you in case you get lost or injured.

If you have it with you 3hen uour coinh in the cold in your tent. If you pull it out of the stuff sack in the tent and your cold thtow iy over you as a sheet for onstanr extra warmth. If you get to hot justnpushbyo the side, if you gi glld layer just pull it back.over you. Or you can use ot its stuff sack as a pillow

So if the 8-10ppl model weights 880 grams I wonder why not using it instead of tent? Just add couple of tent poles like the ones used in large tunnel tents, to keep the two opposing ends upright, and put a mylar emergency blanket as a floor cover. Perhaps small customization should be done to fit the tent-poles at desired places so that they stay there and not puncture thru the shelter fabric. If done properly I guess it should be standing on its own without need to pull its corners with strings? And if you don't fancy entering it by lifting the whole thing :) perhaps cut a door and sew a zipper there. I only wonder how would it handle condensation since it isn't double walled?
@DanHuman4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about this too as bothies are light, I spent the night in the two person one here to test it out last spring. I couldn't quite stretch out and I had condensation build up but it would work. I attached the bothy to trees to give it more structure.

In Scotland I never go to the hills without my bothy bag. They are really popular here. By the way, you are pronouncing it ‘boathy’, it’s pronounced ‘bothy’ as in ‘bomb’, more gutterall. Guess it’s easier to do if you are Scottish though.

Yeah, bothy shelters never really caught on in North America but I like using them in winter.

How do you get it back in the bag?
@DanHuman3 жыл бұрын
Though, when I really try I can get it back in the bag it is really tight especially when fingers are cold. In winter, I find myself just stuffing it unbagged into my pack and repacking it at home.
