Quick and simple rabbit cage build using closet shelves.
-1/2” closet shelf for flooring
-1” closet shelf for sides, top, end caps, and dividers.
-8” zip ties.
This particular build we used 2 - 20”x6ft x1/2”
(For floor and top)
Used 3 - 16” x 6ft x1” for sides, end caps and 1 divider.
This cage is used for our grow outs. Our other cages that house our breeders we use:
-2 - 12” x 6ft x 1/2” for floor. Zip tie both panels together and now it’s 24” deep.
- 5 -20” x 6ft x 1” for top, sides, end caps, and dividers.

Great project. I love your setup. Thanks for sharing I would flip the bottom piece though, for two reasons. one, the two wires from left to right wont bother rabbit's feet. two, structurally more strong floor.

Thanks for watching goodingwashington! Ours is just a reference for anyone trying to build their own. But build them however you want. We haven’t had any issues with their feet, and the floors are sound.

@@squarecountyhomestead dogs are so comical....lol. I enjoyed your video. I raise Flemish Giants in dog kennels. But, raise Rex's in a rabbit shed in wire cages. Interested in building some grow out cages out of the wire shelves, like you built. Thank you for a good, detailed video.

Thanks Tom. Yea we’ve been using those shelving hutches for several years. We like em. We normally use 2- 16” shelving for floor and top. So it’s actually 32” deep.

Can you use a clip or anything that clamps, that would fit the shelves instead of zip ties?

Hi there! It was recommended that we watch your video. THANK YOU for sharing this with us. I can’t hear much that you’re saying (our volume is cranked up as high as it can go). Will you, please list out all supplies and some basic DIY instructions with your video? It would be so helpful. (We’ve watched another gentleman’s video on the jnull0 KZbin channel. We really learn a lot from his videos, but on the hutch-making video, we are not clear on what supplies to buy etc. We like the depth of his hutches, but Compared to his really long ones, we really like your shorter hutch length ... it’s much better for our situation. Again, thank you.

We use 6 ft long closet shelves. Normally I will use 2- 12in wide for bottom( use 1/2” wire shelf on bottom so bunnies feet will not slip thru floor) and 2- 12in wide for bottom. Which will give your hutch to be 24 inches wide. Then 16 or 20 inch wide for walls. A bag of black zip ties work well for us. Thanks for watching

For long term used it would be much better to use proper cage wire both for the health of the rabbits (improper gauge floors can cause sore hocks and broken legs/toes) and some rabbits may eat the coating off of these racks causing them to rust and have to be replaced

Thanks for watching Bretannie! We’ve been using these cages for couple years. There are zero sore hocks, broken legs etc. I’m not saying that it couldn’t happen, but it hasn’t happened to us. We raise NZ, NZX and mini Rex.

Really like this!! I’m new to the bunny world so excuse me if I sound dumb- won’t the wire bottom hurt the bunny’s feet? I’m raising mine for meat- but I don’t want them to be in pain in the meantime.
@squarecountyhomestead
@squarecountyhomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching bggs030610! Great question! But No, it doesn’t hurt their feet at all. We raise NZ and Rex. We’ve used this system for couple years. I’m not sure if you were to raise a large breed like Flemish if sore hocks would be an issue.

Bob thanks for watching! We installed the thick eye hooks to the wood above cages and ran baling wire thru eye hooks and to corners of cage. This works great for us.

I have watched similar tutorials, but they usually use two units for the floor and lid. Are there different uses for an enclosure this size, or is it personal preference?

Thanks for watching Amanda! Yes we usually use 2- 16” shelves for the floor and top. Total of 32” deep. In the video was a unique situation that we needed a small hutch.

The wire is already coated. We have noticed that after a year….there will be a 6” x 6” square in a corner where they urinate and it will eventually eat thru coating and rust.
