ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
If your a fairly new rabbit owner you're most likely concerned with wintertime more than summer. Rabbits are built for the cold and thrive in the winter. Summertime is the hardest time to of the year to keep your rabbits comfortable. Imagine going outside in July with thermal underwear and winter gear on. YIKES! If you don't want to shut down your rabbitries production in those hot summer months this is the solution for you. At The Rabbitry Center we have created our own method for keeping our rabbits comfortable. I'll take you through everything we do to make sure we don't lose any rabbits to heat stroke during our hot Michigan Summers.

Do you put any holes in the bottom of your totes for drainage? I'm wondering about condensation, rain that might seep in and baby rabbit pee. Our climate is very hot and humid and sometimes we get heavy enough rains to flood the area near my cages.

Hi! Thank you so much for your videos. I’ve been exhausted with the fans (mine aren’t solar) and ice bottles through the SC summer. I’m in the process of building underground totes just like yours for all my rabbits. Are these totes enough to cool them? Will the rabbits go down there if they need to in the heat? Or do I still need to do fans and ice? Thank you!

Every little bit helps. The fans are terrific in the The morning, and in the evening, spring in the fall, but in the hottest part of the year I would recommend totes over fans because when it’s very very hot, the fans tend to just blow hot air but the insulated totes will feel cool and relaxing like a basement I won’t see my Rabbits until evening time when they’re coming up for water.

Flipping ice into what looks a plastic watering dish is so fast and simple...gets hot here in eastern Oregon. Waterers with stainless tubes can't begin to provide the volume needed during summer highs. That is another plus for your Glad type dishes. Questions: Can't seem to find any pros or cons of these discussed? The obvious is the gnawing factor.

I'll be sure to do a video on watering and why I like the dishes over the nipple water bottles. Thanks for the idea.

Thank you for the insight on the cooling rabbits. I just started raising New Zealand purebreds. I’m starting with a trio. I found your video to be quite helpful. I used some granite slabs in each pen and that helps tremendous along with the frozen bottles of water the ice helps to keep the granite tiles cold. Only downfall is my little buck likes to chew the milk cartons with the frozen ice in it. Thank you I would have never thought of the marble or granite tiles.

Thanks for watching. Maybe you can freeze a little tupperware bowl of ice and pop out a big ice cube to give him. This gives him a chewing opportunity other than the bottle.

Sweet Thing our bunny and our neighbor bunny seem to be doing fine. Yesterday, when 104, they were running around the yard having a great time. Our bunnies go under the fence to play with one another. Today it is 106 and Sweet thing is in the shade eating heartily. He does not want to come into our air-conditioned house.

Sounds like a happy rabbit life. That rabbit doesn't know what it's missing in the nice air conditioned air. It's funny how they don't really need a lot to be perfectly happy. Just a shady quiet spot.

That’s ridiculous to never clip your rabbits nails. Rabbits can easily go up a carpet ramp with clipped nails and it is much safer for them to do so. Longer nails can get caught in pieces of carpet and the rabbit can unintentionally rip their nail off while struggling to get unstuck.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 5 жыл бұрын
Yikes. Yea that'd be bad if that happened. It hasn't. I didn't make that clear. We don't trim our rabbits nails because of the ramps and the runs. Not just so they can access. We have runs with dirt bottoms and wood hides they claw on. With our dirt, runs and hides and ramps our rabbits care for their nails themselves much like wild rabbits do. When you add in these elements dirt wood structures ramps they can actually naturally grind them down. Much like wild rabbits They spend their time digging and living in burrows, which are called warrens. Doing all of this digging around in the dirt, wild rabbits essentially erode their nails. This keeps them from ever growing overly long. But I agree with you when it comes to domesticated rabbits in a cage or indoors who don't get the chance to grind down there nails naturally. They'll need to be trimmed.

You draw out a solar charger, but never show a solar charger. You show the terminal block, the light switch, the battery, the fans and the solar panels....... What is the solar charger and how is it put together in the system?

Thank you for the electronic fan idea. I KNEW someone would have done that- you're the only one who's actually done it however. I live in Mena, Arkansas- and from the end of June through the end of September/early October it's over 90F @ 85% humidity. I don't want to run underground- first off, Arkansas is a mountain region second, the ground here is sand mixed with pebbles mixed with rocks- and I've had post hole diggers ripped right out of my hands so your boxes won't work here- can't dig down that deep without a backhoe. Third, I'm right next to a forest- that's all I need is a bunch of coyotes digging them up. But put them in cages, use your fan ideas, and then a water mister seems doable.

water misters are awesome and work great I heard they drop the temp by 15-20 degrees and I've thought about it. I need clean water that doesn't gum up the sprayers. Unfortunately we have hard water and I'd have to tap into the water softener to plumb well out to the Rabbitry. I still might do it one day.
@mechlegd
@mechlegd 5 жыл бұрын
Misters tend to only help with "feels like" temperature. If you have low humidity the additional moisture does help. It will not be nearly as helpful in high temp high humidity situations and may even exacerbated bacteria grown in and on your cages. Not trying to poopoo the idea just trying to add some food for thought.
