I will apologize to all those Secretariat enthusiasts in advance. Ive been watching and observing this sport for 32 years i saw some great stride artists in action from precisionist greinton alysheba holybull Cigar skip away john henry up to American pharaoh. but i have only seen the likes of the great secretariat from video. what i saw in California chrome in the 2016 pacific classic, and mind me i never compare horses to the greatest secretariat, but today i will, Chromes stride is a haunting 2016 version of the great horse. chrome stride rate and stride length just blew a champion mare away as if she was a 10k claimer looks like when Secretariat won the Marlboro cup in 1:45 2/5. Very impressive! This horse, California Chrome, got crushed by Shared Belief; lost 2 of 3 races to Bayern as a 3 year old; lost to Prince Bishop in Dubai; lost 9 career races etc. And he is now turned into a bear. I still say that Shared Belief was better than Chrome; and I still say that Bayern had Chrome's number as 3 year olds, though Chrome turned into a better horse; but Chrome has turned into a top 5 year old no doubt.

she is awesome. I've seen her race. What gets me is WHY dont' the owners of Songbird and even Beholder just Stay in the states.  UK and Dubai and other countries would PAY them to bring her over there so they can see her. Let me tell you......she would WIN over there too.  Our American trained horses are so advanced compared to over there. THAT is without drugs too. Chrome was there almost three months to train in Dubai for his prep race there AND then he won the Dubai World Cup against the Worlds Best. That was only five months ago. End of March. No drugs allowed at all.  No Lasix.....all the horses there only used their own horse power. Were SO happy and worked out great. All the horses. Not just Chrome. He loved it there. They treat ALL horses like royalty in Dubai. Songbird and Beholder should do a stint there. It's great for the Resume' too.

Extremely impressive is an understatement. CC looks better than he has ever been. It is so great to see top racehorse at the top of their game. How could anyone not love CC?
@sackssixthave.82648 жыл бұрын
While I think what CC did in this race was really impressive it is certainly NOT Secretariat quality. Secretariat, on his best days, was in a class by himself. I guess I would not be considered a "Secretariat Cultist" because I don't hate any other horse and I certainly don't hate CC. As good as he has been this year I would take Secretariat at his best (and most of the time he was on the top of his game) over CC..
@sackssixthave.82648 жыл бұрын
When on his game Secretariat was the greatest racehorse of all time. Look at his performances in the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, and finally the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat was absolutely brilliant for most of his career. CC is a terrific racehorse and I am a huge fan of his, but he is no Secretariat.
@sackssixthave.82648 жыл бұрын
LOL. This conversation is about Secretariat and CC. Both great racehorses. But CC is no California Chrome. @GBeret838 жыл бұрын
When you factor in how good the two horses chasing him are in their right in Beholder & Dortmund, this was as good as I've ever seen Chrome look at any point in his career, and in any race. Calling his performance in the Pacific Classic "impressive" is really an understatement. It's hard to imagine him getting turned over in the BC Classic just unless running in the G1 Awesome Again Stakes first to stay eligible for that million dollar bonus takes more out of him than Art Sherman accounts for, but I think that's very unlikely. Chrome absolutely looked a million bucks in his coat on the racetrack yesterday at Del Mar, IMO.

Mike Rodriguez Dude you obviously have no idea what your talking about so just stop embarrassing yourself. Chrome has destroyed Frosted on every occasion and he is running a full second faster this year than he ever has in his race career. Frosted is not even in the same league as California Chrome anymore. He really never was. He tried beating up AP in the Traverse stakes and all he managed to do was slow him down just enough to let Keen Ice slip by.....but he couldn't do it. And Chrome and AP would be about even right now if they raced each other. He ran this race in almost 2:00 flat easing up over the last 50 yards. Had V Espinosa been in a race and pushed him across the line he would have destroyed the track record of 1:59:11. Chrome is still getting better and will probably peak sometime this year......Hopefully at the Breeders Cup. Strap in.....Horse of the year 2016 ....easy.

I see some great breeding opportunities within this field! Mostly involved are Chrome, Beholder, and one not in the field Songbird and American Pharoah. Shuffle around the breeding a few years time and we could possibly see some great foals out of em! This is probably Beholder's last year of racing and most likely Chromes from a career and breeding stand point. They've both done enough for a good retirement in the near future.

In addition to being an excellent racehorse, CC has grown into a fine looking TB. He ran so effortlessly the entire race, he never appeared to be exerting himself. Not so for the great Beholder, who looked like she was struggling a bit despite easily finishing second. It seems like her connections don't always push her as hard in training as they should for whatever reason. The big question for me is: Will the still undefeated Songbird enter the BCC? She's still just a three year old, I guess the answer is no.

Chrome ran a great race. Comfortable but not real soft fractions. 2nd best thing Steve Coburn did regarding this horse was to sell his stake in him, the 1st being he bred him. Beholder ran her race and got beat fair and square. Glad to see she's not "off" as some thought she might be getting as she aged. I gotta believe Stevens thought early on he would be battling down the stretch for 2nd place. Dortmund was either not the same horse as his last race or Bejarano just plain blew the ride. Whatever it was I still don't think he was beating Chrome today. As for the Frosted fans, be glad you stayed back East. I love Frosted, he's a gutsy horse with a lot of talent and while he's beaten up the East Coast horses easily it's against marginal or aging competition at best. He's had/has the misfortune of trying to compare/compete against a Triple Crown winner and an almost Triple Crown winner who appears to be getting better with age!
@DanielSong398 жыл бұрын
The track doesn't look fast to me. I think the fractions were fast given the surface, or else the horses would've been bunched up more.
@DanielSong398 жыл бұрын
Chrome shot out of the gate and the other horses couldn't keep up. Ran like a quarter horse in the first 1/16 to open up that lead - it would've been suicidal to chase that.
@josephfederico51658 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, but he didn't even try to contest the lead. Don't have to be capable of running long to press the pace especially since that's his running style. The more and more I think about it the more I believe they, the connections of Dortmund and Beholder, conceded the race to CC and were content to battle each other should he fail or collect the place and show earnings.
@DanielSong398 жыл бұрын
Dortmund would've had to run the second 1/16 in 11 seconds to contest the lead. Wasn't happening. The more and more I think about this race, the more I believe that California Chrome ran like Seattle Slew on that day. Unless you import J.O. Tobin from the Swaps you're not beating him.

@Venckman8 жыл бұрын
If she was mine (one can dream!) I'd put her in the Classic. She completely dominated the rest of the field in the Pacific Classic, and Chrome is not likely to get away with that kind of loose on the lead trip. The field will be big, there will be traffic, and Victor will have a target on his back. Given the way Chrome is running now, I think can take her if he gets a clean trip, but that's not a guarantee by any means. And I don't see too many other horses out there than can take her down at 10 furlongs. If she went in the Classic, I can easily see a repeat of the PC exacta.
@keywestsunset38978 жыл бұрын
Only problem with that is she finished second, and there is no horse in the world who is going to beat Chrome, so no reason to drop back down.JMO, lets see where they go with her, but IMO she loves SA and she traveled last year to face AP, no reason to think finoshed second on the same track she won't go again. ONLY wrench is Frosted can outrun Chrome for the first mile, but the downside to that is Chrome can sit the pocket. Going to be a fun BCC!

Charles Ray Yes, I watched it several times. CC won. This time. But Beholder ran it faster last year, and has a better win percentage. I could see Beholder was not going to catch him. I make no excuses. But he is not a better horse. He has SO MANY losses!! This year seems to be his best. Five straight wins. Beholder has many more straight wins. Beholder is, to me and others, a great horse. CC has been called the best horse on the planet, a ridiculous claim, looking at the numbers. He was beaten by an 8 year old in the Dubai Cup. He is very inconsistent!!
@brucerobbins35848 жыл бұрын
Charles Ray I don't know who crowned you king of racing. Logic consists of facts. And I put up facts that I had researched. Beholder had a faster time in the PacCla last year. She has a much better win average. This is logic, these are facts. If you don't like them, too bad Charley. CC is certainly not the world's best horse currently. I remember Shared Belief beat him easily. So did many others, in which races he finshed 4, 5, or 6. Beholder never did that. CC is very inconsistent. Beholder wins consistently. These are facts, logic, Charley. Read 'em and weep.

CHROME by a pole!
@gdubb20618 жыл бұрын
+John Kaufmann you mean a pole and a half. this race should make it an easy choice for the Breeders cup dirt mile for Frosted. Beholder now runs in the distaff. Just leave Chrome alone at 10f.

That pig American Pharaoh By CC yesterday.oh ducked Beholder last year and would have gotten hammered. He would have been destroyed by CC yesterday. Frosted has no shot at 1 1/4 vs CC.

AP would have been destroyed yesterday by CC.

We will never know what would have happen if AP would have raced against CC , both horses are Great , We will never know the AP potential at 4 or 5 years old , for example if he would have been raced in Dubai

Beholder didn't duck AP, she was on the grounds when they discovered her problem, same with Smooth roller. Race was done right there. FYI, Zayat had the option to train for the the PCC (per TVG) and didn't want to face beholder. and the owners of beholder wanted it.He also could have gone in the Woodward against Honor Code and Liams Map and avoided that race also as that race would have been the exact setup the travers was where he lost. Liams map setting suicide fractions and Honor code from way back like keen ice and beating AP. Lets face it, those are the facts, two races against top older horses in which they would have not been easy for him and Zayat avoided them as not to risk the sire fees.From a business standpoint I get it, but from the racing end Zayat avoided major tests against the best there were. Sceretariat, Seattle Slew Affirmed, none of them avoided the Grade 1 races vs older.

Please, just stop with the Beholder lame excuse, track vet verified it. Again, AP ducked two major races not etoo lose money on stud fees. And your exact reason "far more durable" and "light boned" is another excuse that people made up to cover why there wouldn't ever be another TC winner, well there was.

Not saying he wasn't great or a beast, all the more reason that he should have knocked heads with Beholder in the PCC and Honor Code and Liams Map in Woodward. The fans lose out,BTW. I am glad he won for a selfish reason, that all the so-called "experts" will just shut their traps for the next 10 years with all this talk of changing the distance of the TC races because I don't believe it is the "bucking the trend" factor. Look at the registered foals in the 1970s averaged around 27,000 a year (21,000 in 2012 for AP).in the 1970s. 1980 and 1990 the foals register was at numbers between 35,000 and 51,000. I'll bet anything that greatly reduced a chance of a TC, as it's more than coincidental we now have another TC winner with 1970s foal numbers.
