From studying the dusty surface of Mars, to plunging into the atmosphere of Venus, over the last 60 years, we've launched hundreds of probes into space on trajectories to visit each of the terrestrial planets. But for all the fascinating discoveries made on the way, humanity's journey towards the stars started out in a much darker place- a battlefront between the world's then two great competing superpowers. And in this first episode on my new series on probes, we will revisit this space race, and the major milestones on route to visiting each of the terrestrial planets.

We need more politicians passionate about furthering the frontier of humanity in the modern day like this. The mid 1900s were truly a magical time for space exploration. It has been more than half a century since, our technology has leapfrogged over what they had back then, yet due to budget cuts and lack of interest from the public, our space programs are a shadow of what they were. I hope we can rise above these inane worldly problems and set our sights on the final frontier once more.

I was in first grade in 1961 in Sanford Florida. Our class was watching John Glenn's trip on TV, the countdown. At just the right moment our teacher told us all to go outside, where we could see it in the distance. Bang, zoom!

I love that the Soviets got a probe onto Venus's surface and gave us those pictures. The USSR isn't remembered for a lot of good things, but that was definitely one of them.

Propaganda of the United States has managed to a kind of take on delete the good things about the USSR, but I am fortunate enough to live in times of the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia. I can tell you, the USSR was never as bad as it was pictured by the US propaganda. The propaganda was much worse than the communist propaganda.

It’s a shame you didn’t mention bepicolumbo or whatever the ESA mission to mercury is called. As far as I understand it, whilst it hasn’t entered orbit around mercury yet and won’t for several more years, it has already done at least one close flyby!
