Ben Eagle from the University of Canterbury Motorsports Formula SAE team runs is through some of the considerations that go into designing and constructing a carbon fibre monocoque chassis along with many of the advantages that come with it when compared to a steel space frame construction, although interestingly one of their 130kp and 80hp ICE powered chassis uses a mixture of both with the reasoning also covered.
Torsional rigidity and its importance relating to overall chassis setup and handling is also touched on along with how it is measured and where the knowledge used to set the targets comes from.
Construction time frames in relation to aero and packing are some major considerations when it comes to this approach and Ben also runs through how it generally all fits together and as an added bonus drives the team to make sure much of the project is on track and in production early on in the Formula SAE cycle.
The team competed in a mini competition with the University of Auckland at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell, New Zealand.
What is Formula SAE? Also known as FSAE or Formula Student, it is a University level student design competition which is run and governed by SAE International (aka Society of Automotive Engineers International). The concept is to develop a small Formula (single-seat open-wheel car) race car which is then evaluated by a number of different static and dynamic considerations and events.
