I first time i seen Doug he was driving for Bill Smith . it was at the iowa state fair grounds in 1973. Doug was in the lead an a hot aug. day . the track slick off an his right rear was smoking from tire spin. Every one was thinking it's going to blow. What a show but he didn't let much an won a 30 lap feature. THANK YOU Doug an BOB TROSLE

Doug is much too humble to admit it, but he is one of the best sprint car drivers ever. He earned everything the hard way. Nothing was handed to him. What he lacked in natural ability (he had tons of natural ability) he made up in grit and desire. A true throwback type racer who could build, and work one his own equipment.

A friend of mine got me started watch sprint races in the 80's and it seemed every time it was Wolfgang in the back at the start and in front at the end. Man could he drive that car.

I got the privilege to hang out by the pool with Doug at a hotel in Phoenix the Sunday day after he flipped into the junk yard off 3 and 4 at Manzanita at the Western World Nationals. What an awesome man! I have met most of the big names of sprint car racing but this was one of my favorite memories.

Doug summed it up quite well. Driving the car squarer more so on longer faster tracks is faster than throwing it in and driving it out. Easier on the tyres and car as well. Short tracks you can sometimes do it,, use the stagger to run it in I am no expert but have been a good road racer so big sideways has never been me. This in a 1968 Aussie Supermodified running as it did in 75 as a modified Sprintcar. On modern tyres ofcourse and 8-10" of stagger. And no power steering,, that is for girls and makes you drive straighter.

Im a huge Sammy Swindell fan and i always was of a mind that Steve Kinser was the best and Doug Wolfgang was a close 2nd and that Sammy was third best of the big three. Doug got hurt and its the only reason he dont have more wins then Sammy imo. Wolfgang beat Steve and Sammy's ass alot in the same night and that was a tall task. In today's sissy era i call it which is full of pussy drivers there is not 3 badass very similar in talent guys at all like the Big three era not even close. Donny Schatz didnt get good till Mark Kinser retired and Steve and Sammy were washed up. Anyway damn Doug Wolfgang was a helluva racer and a class act
