I can really relate to your 3 yr. old, Lucy. She's so much like a nice mare that I had! My mare was super broke, she had power steering and power brakes. But when my mare came through an arena gate, she was looking for a barrel, or a steer, or a goat, and standing around wasn't on her agenda - she was ready to make her run. So was I, so I didn't fight her. I rode her to our starting point and turned her loose. She was all business and she always gave it 100%. I loved her for her heart. We won a lot in our events.
