Now it's clear that her family might be partially responsible for Matt's decision. if he can't be comfortable and feel safe around her family, it is very much a deal breaker. Especially for those, who want to be part of a big family. As Matt's mom said, Matt was always drawn to big families. The prospect of having a future with Rachael, with her family not liking him is hard.

Not only was he inexperienced within the franchise, he was also very closed off and has a lot personal things and demons he has to get through before he’s ready for a real relationship. But on top of that, the pressure of being the first black bachelor clearly made things harder on him. And then to make things worse, he was given an incredibly toxic group of women to court, minus a few, and not having chemistry with any of them. At this point, I’m starting to feel some empathy for Racheal that I didn’t have for awhile, considering I am black and was very disgusted by her actions. But between her apologies, promises to do better, scolding her racist fans and being thrown under the bus by Chris Harrison (who had no right to speak on her situation before she did) and her own family, the girl has no chance of affecting change. Some food for thought that came to mind as I was listening-here in the South people believe in free speech to the 100th degree, even hate speech that they themselves would never condone and personally find disgusting and harmful. I do wonder if her lack of deleting posts/comments as an admin spawns for an idolization of unregulated free speech rather than condoning the content itself. Not saying I agree, but it doesn’t seem like a stretch that this could be the case. Now, if she’s “liking” those posts/comments, that’s obviously an indicator that it’s about more than free speech. So many layers to consider for this whole story. My heart goes out to Matt and Rachel. This whole thing sucks.
@DaveNealComedian3 жыл бұрын
I like the free speech argument and I appreciate your comment. Free speech obviously can apply to the law. Kim Kirkconnell can’t be arrested (obviously) for bring an admin to this group. BUT the Facebook group represents people that would now exist in Matt’s life if he marries Rachael. Imagine the ptsd that may come with knowing you have to visit your in-laws. Forsyth county already has a horrid history.

Do people in the South believe in Kind speech? Her family are supposed to be Christians. So instead of deleting the posts, why didn’t she challenge them or engage the posters in a conversation? I don’t buy that at all. You can not want to delete someone’s words but still hold them accountable for them - the mother should not have just let that sit there unchallenged.
@KelseyMarieeMusic3 жыл бұрын
@@DaveNealComedian I couldn’t agree more that in my opinion this should be a non-negotiable deal breaker in terms of Matt ever considering a relationship with Rachel. Super unfortunate, but as a wife, I can attest to the fact that having a relationship with your in-laws is super important and affects almost every aspect of your relationship. Definitely wouldn’t be healthy for Matt to have in-laws like this-would cause general toxicity on top of legitimate, horrible PTSD. In terms of free speech, people here don’t even view it as solely a legal thing. They think the policing of speech anywhere is unethical, so I can imagine if Kim Kirkconnell were to delete posts/comments it would go against her conscience and values in that way (again-I’m not saying that’s right. In my opinion, there should absolutely be a line.) Not sure if this is helpful or unhelpful, but my family is from Forsyth County and are amazing, progressive, loving people with diverse friend groups who actively advocate for inclusion and love. Not everyone in FoCo is tainted by the county’s roots, which are certainly very, very dark. Still, culture there at large is very, very different from the rest of the country. That’s why I like to pop in and explain the mindset of those places from time to time, because I think a lot of these people are well-meaning and have no idea the depths of harm they’re causing, and I truly believe that their actions would be entirely different if they did have that understanding. Because ultimately, their hearts are loving and they’re very accepting of people of all kinds; they’re just wildly ignorant when it comes to history and the impact of celebrating it or even “honoring” it. I know several of people with confederate flags in their homes who are incredibly loving and including, they just genuinely have no idea why flying that flag would be an issue. I don’t think ignorance is an indicator of conscience or character-rather, I think ignorance is a sign of deeply-needed education, personal growth, and exposure to cultures like those in the North who see these things so differently. My high school’s mascot was the Rebels, and everyone -black, white, Asian, Indian, Native American, etc-flew the confederate flag at football games. I never attended because my parents are from the North and had taught me about the flag, but none of the teachers, parents, or students I knew (from all backgrounds) could even comprehend an issue with it. It’s a different world down here. A lot needs to change, and education must come from a place of wanting better for people, not judging them. Like I said, even our own teachers flew the rebel flag, so the idea of it being r@cist is laughable to folks who grew up with people of all cultures celebrating it, because they have genuinely never been exposed to it in a negative light. That needs to change. The conversations you’re having here are so, so important. Thank you for opening the dialogue in a way that is accessible to people in these Southern communities.

@@nk47100 totally agree. She should have replied and said, “Hey, this isn’t a place to share hate. You’re free to have your opinion, but this is a space for supporting Rachel, not bringing Matt down. Reconsider and measure your words, or please take them elsewhere.” That should be the absolute bare minimum, especially as a Christian. Free speech should be met with kind speech. We need to use our free speech to communicate when the sentiments of others are unacceptable. It does feel indicative of what’s going on with her mom that she hasn’t responded. Disappointing, to say the least, to hear her silence.

Was it more difficult for him to be so poised with the last two women because feelings were involved. I don't know...any thoughts?
@janh79643 жыл бұрын
I think that the pressure got to him. I think that he really wanted to find someone to love and share a future with but the Bachelor franchise pushes so hard for an engagement in the last episode that it was too much for him. Even his wording with Rachel was that he couldn't propose but loved her enough to see where their relationship would go. Then, the whole social media thing broke and it complicated things. As it got closer to the end, I think that Matt become more concerned about getting hurt and began doubting his readiness and ability to do this. He was so hurt by a couple of the women that he really cared about pulling themselves out of the competition and I think that scared him. That's why he did that whole sit down scenario with his father. I think that aside from the Rachel/racism situation, Matt needs counseling to address the hurts from his family-of-origin issues before he will be ready for a commitment like marriage.

I think it started out as a mother's good intention to help her daughter during the backlash but I don't think her mother realize it got bad to bashing Matt so her Mom removed herself from the admin. As a mother, I understand where she is coming from. Can you imagine her daughter's image is completely tarnish after this and there is no way she can bounce back from being labeled as racist.
