the fact that she wasn't hissing and spitting, nor acting super-terrified, is a good sign she's not super feral. It also looks like she was a TNR cat since her ear is tipped. Maybe she once lived in a home before becoming a stray. Hopefully she can adapt to a home life! But don't be disappointed if things don't work out. Not all stray cats can't be transitioned to living a life in a home. It all depends on their level of feral-ness.

You should search for "Kitten Lady" here on youtube, maybe even get in touch with her for rescue tips! She's a kitten fostering animal rescue queen and knows a lot about that world. Recently she has a litter of babies that she was able to reunite with their feral mother, and has talked about plans to return the feral mother to her rightful home when the kittens are weaned. Feral cats aren't necessarily meant to be tamed and kept indoors, a lot of times they're better off being spayed/neutered and returned to their (outdoor) home. Even more so if they have a colony. This cat you captured doesn't seem completely feral and may be able to adjust to indoor life, especially if she's been in a home before and ended up a stray. Perhaps she's always been a street cat though and is only somewhat used to humans since she's been fed by them. That eye is definitely a concern and I'm glad you were able to have that checked out by a vet. Best of luck with her, again definitely get in touch with Hannah "Kitten Lady" if you can for the best advice you'll ever need regarding rescues!

It's so hard when they need emergency care. Usually with a cat like that, you would want to spend a few weeks earning her trust before you tried to capture her, but with her eye the way it was, it's impossible to take a slow and easy route. Yall did a great job! I used a similar metal havahart trap to catch a feral cat that was heavily pregnant. I didn't have time to gain trust, I had to catch her before she had her babies. She never was tame, and she hated the 3 months she spent in our house (2 months for the babies, 2 weeks to wean before surgery, 2 weeks to recover from her spay). Once we released her we never saw her again, but I know she has a better life now that she's not constantly pregnant, and we found homes for all 5 of her kittens (including one that developed a serious condition that the vet was certain would be fatal, and he grew out of it). Also, your vet is AWESOME to film for yall and trim her claws. Our vets office does the same thing RE covid, and we have to wait in the car for a vet technician to come out and pick up our pets.

*If it's a boy, maybe a name like Wakō, since he has one eye?* The word Wakō - literally "Japanese pirate" or "dwarf pirate" - refers to historical pirates of varying origins (although most were predominantly from Japan) who raided the shores of China, Korea and Japan from the 13th to 16 centuries. It also follows the two syllable pattern of the other cat's names as a bonus. Maybe like so Rachel and Jun can see?

I've actually thought I would like to do something similar until I tried it once and realized how stressful it is for me to care for a cat. Not because I don't like it, but because I become too attached and start worrying all day about their wellbeing, so for my own, I let him go. I also had no money to take him to the vet. But he still comes daily to my room to eat. Just to eat though. Once he's done eating off he goes.

When a cat is trap smart, you should try tying up food in one of the upper corners in the back. Like bacon. They look at the food and not the trip plate and then can make a mistake moving. This sometimes works. Also, tying open the door so that it cannot close and then using the trap as a feeding station can lull the defenses. After a couple of weeks of using it as a feeding station, you can then set it. BTW, traps should never be left unattended if you do not know the area and are not in a secure place sheltered from the environment. (SOMEtimes, depending on your knowledge of the area, the agreement of property owners, and the presence of a secure locked fence, you can set a trap sheltered from the sun and the rain, and ants etc. for a few hours or overnight with frequent checks.) Remember: Cats have been attacked while in traps by dogs. Never, never, never just set a trap and leave. Frankly, correct trap usage usually means never letting a trap out of eyesight or out of hearing range, but, few people seem able to follow strict trap protocols. Sometimes people steal traps for nefarious purposes. Non-spring-loaded traps are preferred and generally safer.

Feral cats take a lot to rehabilitate and some can't be happy around humans at all, but she's definitely a lot more comfortable with her eye getting looked after. As for names, I personally like "Amaterasu". Yes, like the Shinto Goddess. But in the story, once she was slighted, Amaterasu hid in a cave and wouldn't come out until lured, and only then was able to reconcile with why she hid. (Which was her brother in the story, but y'know, allegories and all that, haha.) It's a bit like you guys having to lure her out of her hiding because she was hurt. I think naming her something like Shinoa (using the characters for ‘heart’ and ‘love’) or Shinobu (using the single kanji for ‘perseverance’ and ‘ patience’) would be beautiful! It highlights the efforts you made to catch and help her

This makes me so happy! This week I adopted a cat that was being fostered! (He was put on a list to be euthanized when his foster parents saved him). I love him so much, and he’s already beginning to trust me! He’s a sweet sleepy boy. I’m so glad to see more cats being fostered, especially by such good foster parents like you two!!!

3:02 Those cages really work! One time dad placed a trap to catch raccoons that sneak by and it caught a cat instead! It was beyond angry and was hissing like crazy and ran out as soon as dad let it go

This is very interesting! It reminds me of last summer. Last summer a young mother cat gave birth to kittens near our house. She didn’t have an owner and we frequently saw her kittens roaming around. Because we didn’t want to let a cat colony to build up we decided to catch them all (easier said then done 😂). It wasn’t until one of the kittens fell into our yard that my dad managed to get him. The next day we called our animal shelter and they came to pick up the kitten (and they managed to catch the mother who’d been waiting for her kitten). They left traps out for the others. We knew that there were three kittens (there was a calico, an orange, and a grey). Since we caught the orange we thought we were all good. But later that evening another orange and the calico kitten were caught. We informed the pound that we thought that there was another kitten out there and that we wanted to keep the other two kittens to help them get used to humans (they were basically feral). At this point while we tried to catch the grey kitten, we had the tv on all the time where the other kittens were. We had food and milk and toys (since we have other cats it’s not like we were new to how cats act). We had the tv on so they’d become desensitized to the sound of humans and other noises that may come up. Eventually we tried to feed them with our hands- anything really to get them used to human interaction. After two days we finally caught the grey (it was exhausting since I had to check every couple of hours and I was starting to think she died- it was so hot and she was all alone). Thankfully we caught her and all was well. After having the three kittens for roughly four days (the grey for only two) the first two kittens were playing, running up and down our cat tree. (And we also did exercises by separating them from each other and putting them alone with people in a small room. The calico was pretty okay, the orange one slept in our lap the very first try, and the grey one constantly cried out and wanted to be with her siblings). When the shelter came to pick them up we had already fallen in love with them all. But the little orange was was just too cute (and also we had two female cats and we thought getting a boy cat would be great). And so his sisters went to the pound with his mother and brother. All of them were adopted in no time and I hope they’ve all found amazing homes- I only wish I could’ve known where they went. As for our little orange tomcat. We named him Alexander Hamilton (or just Hamilton) since he was such a flirt (that and our other cats are named after people/characters). He’s a little over a year old now- a complete sweetheart. He’s like my little shadow, everywhere I go he has to go. He loves playing fetch- 24/7. And he loves sleeping under the covers of my bed with me. He gets along decently with my other two cats. Agatha Christie- Aggie for short- (our oldest cat at 8 years old) doesn’t like cats much so they don’t interact a lot. But Miss. Marple- Missy for short- (my other cat who I raised since she was a kitten- she’s seven) is such a sweetheart and was very patient. Unfortunately Hamilton is like a devil and always attacks her playfully and and wants to play while she’s sleeping. All in all helping cats find homes, getting them comfortable with humans... it was an amazing experience and I’d love to do similar things when I’m older.

If you're a decent person, you just cannot look the other way. This is the way to go. We did something similar and had our foster operated on a huge open wound and then found her an excellent home through our vet. When you see/deal with cases like this, talk to your local vet. Oftentimes they are willing to give you a special deal for treating a stray or they may even waive charges except for meds.

I remind abiut the story to capture a kitten strayed in the JSDF base. 13 soldiers had researched the target, planned, and equipped well with 3 teams. They needed 30 mins to capture the target, with some injuries. The target, or kitten was transferred to his/her foster parent, who worked at the base. Anyway, well done Rachel and Jun!

Cause people in the comments are telling their story about how they found a cat I'm gonna share mine too. My dad found this kitten I think it was 4 or 5 months old I'm not sure. My dad found the kitty on the road and took it. The story how he got the kitty was there was a car on the road that stopped ahead of him and this guy hopped off his car to get the kitty off the road cause it might get hit by vehicles and such. He kept kicking it at the side of the road cause the guy didn't want to touch the kitty, my dad called out to the guy and said he'll take the kitty home and I mostly took cared of it since. (My dad was always busy so I'm the one who takes care of Min Min /name of the kitty/)
