I trained a cat to use a home toilet several years ago. It was easy. Interestingly, I had brought the cat to my office one evening (a space he wasn't familiar with) because our team had a late night project and the cat could wander around the office while we worked. My co-worker, who discovered him perched on the office bathroom toilet, was more than amused by the trained behavior. And I was surprised that the cat transfered his home training to an unfamiliar toilet.

@@MilouAT I would do some research on it. I got one cat recently and somehow ended up with three lol. Cleaning their box is a bit of a pain and for three small cats they sure can go. I thought this would be a great alternative but turns out it may be too good to be true as cats have an instinct to bury their mess and don't like using toilets. Maybe it's not a huge deal, but we personally decided to let them live more naturally how they prefer. Sadly lol.

Great video! Yes patience is key!!! I bought this and have been training two cats. One Is 2 years old and the other one is 9 months. Its been 6 weeks The younger cat she struggled to poo in the tray and I would have to reassure her it was ok and she would finally poo, then I rewarded her with treats. There’s been a handful of times they missed the ring and have gone down the outside of the toilet. This week my youngest cat has been pooing by herself! SUCCESS! It’s been a great experience so far! And it’s been wonderful to not have the cat litter smell & cleaning up! So much better! I just went to the green tray today!

Hi Tony, our cats are 5, 8, and 11 years old. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for us. We progressed to the amber ring, and then all of a sudden two of the cats decided that they were going to poop on the floor beside the toilet (they still peed in the Litter Kwitter). We tried going back to the red ring, but they kept popping on the floor. All in all, we spent 8-9 weeks using the LK and eventually decided to stop and go back to litter boxes, because it was stressing out my husband and I and I think stressing out our cats, too. If we ever got a kitten, we’d try it again with the kitten, but I’m wondering if our cats are too old and too “set in their ways”.

I’ll caution that not all cats will be willing to use it, and it disrupts several of their natural instincts. It’s a cool idea to add to the litter set up or to use if a cat seems enthusiastic about the toilet, but I wouldn’t recommend getting a cat with the expectation that the cat will use the toilet. Something else to consider could be an automatic litter box, like the Scoopfree or Litter Robot, which would make it so that you don’t have to clean the litter other than taking out a waste tray every now and then

All the best. I have only trained kittens but Litter Kwitter says "If your cat is older (above 8 years) or not litter trained, though, it will probably take a bit longer. They have more bad habits to un-learn. Our oldest successfully trained cat so far is Oscar who started when he was 12 years old!"

@Felix Thibault yes in general cats like to bury their poop and pee and they like to be able smell their smell in the box. It is not usually a good idea to teach cats to use the toilet. Perhaps this cat is truly happy and that’s great but I’m pretty sure he still prefers to use a litter box.

I wouldn't train a cat to go on the human toilet either coz of the stress it causes the cat. Same with children, they shouldn't be toilet trained when they are not ready yet (learnt that the hard way with my daughter, tried doing things by the book when i should have listened more to my daughter. Caused a lot of problems with constipation coz of the stress it caused her, so we had to stop for her health. She started using the toilet on her own without any training about 7 months later after our failed attempt) Same can be the case for the cats since cats are very prone to constipation even without toilet training as most of the commercially available cat food is not at all suitable for cats (my cousin is a vet and those are her words not mine). But i did have a cat who chose to go to pee above the drain hole in the shower. It was mostly because at the time we had 2 cats with just one litter box and since we lived in a place where going outside was not an option, and cat litter was not available, we used old newspapers as cat litter, just tore it up in small pieces. Cats are very hygiene conscious animals, they prefer their paws yo be clean and dry, and if one cat had already peed in the litter box and it was wet, the other refused to go there and get her paws wet in urine. This particular cat used the litter box only for poop. And if someone forgot to leave the door open to the shower for her, she would go to the kitchen sink and use the drain hole there. My cat had figured out how the plumbing worked in our house. Even after my older cat passed away, the younger one still continued to use drain holes for pee even though now the litter box was never wet. So easy to clean the litter box with newspapers when it's dry. But again, we didn't purposely train the cat, the cat chose to do that herself (out of necessity).

This sounds like a good idea but cats waste contains a nasty parasite called Toxoplasma which can cause some serious health problems to humans. This parasite is why you should avoid touching cat poop, never mind flushing it down the toilet and exposing the whole water system to the parasite. Some water systems may not be properly equipped to kill Toxoplasma. The prevalence of the parasite in the water system may have an impact on more than just humans, too. It has been found in river otters and may infect any other warm-blooded animal as well. Ultimately, anything we can do to reduce this parasite can help the overall environment. Just some food for thought.

Next level of training: "Flush The Toilet"

My cats all know a lot of commands such as sit, stand, lay, up / down, left / right, look, kiss, paw and a few more I'm probably forgetting. I can ask for them to give me their left / right paw and they'll do it. If I've tossed treats on the ground and they can't find one, I'll tell them treats, look right / left and they'll do it and find it. I also taught them to hiss to say no and meow for yes. So I can ask them what they want and go through a list such as food, water, litter, treats, etc.. and they'll meow when I land on the right word. I'll tell them to show me - for instance if food is what they want, when I say show me, they'll run to the food box which also reinforces the word. I also ask them things which my hands, like if they want pets by kneading the air... my oldest has started to raise her paws and knead the air with one paw at a time when she wants pets. I tried a cat litter thing but a different brand that was too flimsy so I ended up not doing that. But they do know how to balance on the toilet - just need to make the connection to actually do their business. Cats are incredibly intelligent, but they are more like people than dogs. Dogs will always want to please while cats will think about whether or not they want to do something. Also, you can teach them to flush.

I've never trained my cat to use the toilet but it still used it. My Tuxedo Cat was stray at first i think, and he try to stay with us for like 3 months after repeatedly trying to chase her out. But she never give up, always come to our house. Then we accepted her. She was indoor type never leave our house. She was wild in the beginning and bit and scratch me for a long time. But after some time, she was the best cat I've ever had, and her death last year was more painful than my original cat or any other cat. As long as i remember, I've cried for missing someone like only three times, but I've cried so much when she died. My cat and my mom are the only thing that ever let me cry emotionally.

I’m so glad this works for you! Be careful though because teaching a cat to use the toilet can lead to problems with spraying. At least that’s what cat experts say, and in my experience it’s true. We had one cat who trained herself to use the toilet but then she began to spray afterwards it was really awful.

Only problem is... If the water company finds out you can be fined a lot of money. They are not equipped to deal with animal waste and cat poo is very toxic and carries a parasite (toxoplasmosis) which they don't all treat the water for.

I've heard in an article that it's not really healthy for cats to use a human toilet, one of the reasons why is because It Goes Against Their Instinct The reason we lay down litter in the first place is because cats instinctually bury their waste. In the wild, this is a vital way to ward off predators by hiding the smell. But just because your cat isn’t in the wild, it doesn’t mean they lack the instinct to bury. Just listen the next time your cat goes to the litter box, you’ll hear them scratching and burying their waste… even if you’re down the hall. If you take away their litter and replace it with a toilet, you get rid of their ability to bury, but not their desire or instinct. Even when toilet trained, cats will still paw at the area around them to act out this instinctual behavior, but the inability to bury their waste could cause additional stress, which could lead to potty accidents or other stress-related problems.

The only part your leaving out is you have to have PATIENCE. if your not patient then forget about it". This takes a very unique individual to achieve this. This is a good lesson to teach people who have never owned a pet. If you can do this then you have what it takes. Anything less is not good enough and you need to work on yourself. Thank you for such an educational video to help cats quit the litter tray. I've been contemplating this Litter Quitter for some months, but worried about the unsuccessful outcome against the cost.
