This was our Verdi/Puccini Dream Team in the 60's. Price-Corelli. These kind of singers don't exist anymore, but almost more importantly - where are these conductors nowadays. Molinari-Pradelli, Rescigno, Veltri, Previtale, Guadagno, Cleva (I'm speaking here only of those who appeared regularly in NYC). These men knew how to carry the singers on their hands - it's one of the reasons they always sang so well.

I'm glad you enjoyed listening to Price and Corelli, John. And yes, it has been very disturbing to see some of the most disgusting comments from so-called opera fans, which considerably lessen my enjoyment of a video. Just because someone has some other favorite singer doesn't justify vilifying another who has given everything they've got to the lyric art form. I have no scruple about blocking civility-challenged individuals, as well as racists and anti-semites; in fact, just the opposite - I feel great about it!

I saw the production with Tucker instead of Corelli at the Met. Not to start a discussion but I personally rate Corelli slightly over Tucker. But a great day at the Met with either.

art724 :: it must have been a blast going to the MET ! no matter who was singing. i grow up in new york & all i ever did was pass by the Metropolitan Opera House. i never even peeked into the "lobby" ; but, honestly, i was a very inexperienced opera-fan & very happy listening at home. it must be nice to have those "live" memories. did you ever hear Corelli at the Met ? was his voice as tremendous -- live -- as on records ?

Viva Leontyne! Corelli wasn't the most nuanced or polished of singers, but his voice had a clarion ring and his presence excited audiences. Leontyne recounted to Dick Cavett on his talk show about her throwing a chair towards Corelli when he wasn't "relating" during the recording of CARMEN. "I just helped him to relate that's all. We're very good friends." They were and whenever they appeared together onstage it was an event - not just a performance. Franco is no longer with us, but Leontyne will be 91 next month.

I used to watch Dick Cavett when I was young, but I wasn't interested in opera back then, so I'm sorry that I either didn't see her on there or don't remember. Thank you for sharing - that made me laugh!

Just saw her on the PBS special The Opera House documentary/Lincoln Centre) and she said it was hard to concentrate on her singing when Corelli was close by on stage. Plus she looked vital as all get out ..in her nineties!! bravo to both.
@labienus99686 жыл бұрын
Why do you need the qualification about Corelli? Be bold-he was the ultimate tenor and could be sensitive, and nuanced when needed. I don't know about the Price story, but having seen FC on stage, in performance many times, except for a few exceptions,he was the one throwing chairs!

Corelli was always an exciting tenor but his voice, thrilling as it was, did not have the focus that Tucker's had. Tucker was a classic singer whose vocal production was always fully controlled and contained. Corelli was more like a runaway locamotive, powerful but uncontained. The tones were blared and hurled rather than produced. My choice obviously, is Tucker but I don't discount Corelli or his immense appeal.

Tucker no tiene nada que ver con Corelli
@charlesrhodes13584 жыл бұрын
I would say the diminuendo that Corelli achieved live in Tosca from Covent Garden in 1957 in "E lucevan le stelle" shows him to be much more than a screamer, if that was your implication.
@lundilar4 жыл бұрын
The Tucker Price Trovatore and the Tucker Price Madama Butterfly are absolutely golden age performances not to be equalled for passion, intensity, dramatic s.excitement and vocalism unmatched matched by any other singers.

@@charlesrhodes1358 Not at all, Charles. One cannot discount Corelli's outstanding ability to spin out gorgeous diminuendos. My reference regards the production of the voice. We all have our preferences. Corelli's prodigious talents need no defense. Let us take the best from both singers and continue to listen to the magic of opera.
@labienus99684 жыл бұрын
@@hashatz My God someone who has a preference, but sounds reasonable-I must be dreaming. I'm so tired of the people who must always say the best, unmatched, not to be equaled, etc. I heard both Tucker and Corelli many times live, I admired them both, but I disagree with your statement about focus regarding Tucker. Tucker had a more traditional voice in the spinto Caruso tradition etc. Corelli's voice was thoroughly unusual-baritonal, darkish, yet clearly a tenor, with a titanic top-with C's even D flats. I never heard a tenor whose voice actually got broader on his high notes, as Corelli's did, yet with real squillo. Tucker really couldn't sing softy, shade, color, diminuendi, the way Corelli did. AS much as I lived Tucker's heart, those lurching vocal exaggerations on a given night could get on my nerves, as well as his overdone Italian pronunciation.
