Hi, cobbler's daughter here! Those "shoehorn things" in your basement clutter boxes are shoe stretchers! You can use them to make leather shoes that are too tight more comfortable. Simply put them in the shoes, crank them until the shoe is stretching out, and leave 'em for a day or two. Should make tight shoes permanently easier to wear. My dad used to have HUNDREDS in his little shoe shop and it was my job as his "assistant" (read: annoying child he kindly brought to work with him when my mother needed a break) to put shoes on the stretchers and shine them as necessary. :)

Hi! I’m a furniture conservator 🤓. First of all, thank you for your service 🫡! You did a great job! The reason you want to use a plastic scraper is that metal might have a chemical reaction with the paint stripper, but it seemed to be fine. Wearing gloves helps prevent you developing a contact allergy, wearing goggles prevents an ER trip if it gets in your eye. Solvents like acetone or ethanol are great to remove any leftovers! We use it too, usually on cotton swabs. The wood can handle it, just be careful if its veneer (not in this case I think, seems solid oak), that you don’t harm the glue. If you want to reduce elbow grease, you couldv’e tried a second coat of paint stripper and cover it with cling film, to allow it to penetrate a little deeper. But you might have still needed to do some finishing touches with a solvent. The furniture wax made it so stunning! For most waxes, you can heat it up to have it penetrate deeper and give a richer colour. Use a hair dryer, or heat by friction, and then buff out as it cools for a shiny finish. You had absolutely great results, and it always warms my heart to see another whitewash gone 🥰

I was also thinking maybe a very light sand to smooth everything. She's our hero for bringing that cabinet back from the shadow lands!
@annesways92898 ай бұрын
@@amberemanuel8561 sanding is very satisfying, but rarely actually needed! Lets say you have a vintage mid 19th century table, and every 25 years or so it was sanded down to put a new finish on it. Thats 7 times sanded down in the past 175 years. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you can easily take away half a centimeter (1/5 inch) of material per session, so thats 3,5 cm / well over an inch. That adds up so quickly, and can really spoil the appearance of the furniture or even break it eventually. And if there was veneer, its already completely sanded off by then! (Sorry, conservator on a rant because I’ve seen too many beautiful pieces ruined by this 🥲) In this case I think the wax finish already helped out a lot to fill in the pores and any uneven spots 😊

Bird nerd here! :D Unsalted peanuts for crows are GREAT, but if the crows are not already just hanging about your yard, you'll want to make your yard bird friendly to begin with. I recommend a large tube feeder (perhaps with a squirrel-deterrent gravity cage) and fill it with black oil sunflower seeds. (Not a mix, most birds don't eat the millet filler and it just leaves a mess while everyone picks out their favorite thing, the sunflower seeds). Alternatively, you can get suet feeders and suet. Either way, the presence of other dumber birds hanging around partying tells the crows that no predators are around, and they'll come get some sunflower seed scraps. At that point, can toss them some unsalted peanuts now that the crows are likely actually hanging out in the yard ;D Another tip is that ALL birds and critters like a water source. A fountain or bubbler or something brings everyone to the yard, and they're like, it's fresher than yours.

I'm an organic chemist and work with acetone daily to clean glassware, and I'd FAR rather get it on my skin than breathe in a bunch of acetone fumes. Which reminds me! Get a respirator!! Even if she's using "adequate ventilation" or working inside, I suspect she's exposed to a LOT more VOCs than the average person. That shit will do some damage over time, and a lot of it's not great in the short term either. I think people underestimate the amount of damage breathing in chemical fumes can cause. Eye protection is great, use it. But don't forget that though the damage to your lungs may not be immediately obvious, enough of it will add up over time. And make sure it's actually one rated for organic fumes, not just a dust mask. It can live in that handy little drawer.

Love the cabinet! Here's a tip to get another level of paint from the pores of the wood; scrub with superfine (000) steel wool after letting another coat of stripper sit on the wood.

I really truly enjoy ALL your content. 🥰 I discovered you on accident and was immediately hooked. I love your looks, your creativity and your personality. It’s all so refreshing. I’m not nearly as crafty or creative but your videos are so inspiring to me and I just try stuff out more and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But it’s always fun. Thank you for that! Please never doubt that we won’t enjoy your videos if you’re “not making things”. We do! Thank you! ♥️

be careful when mixing chemicals tho i would've been more concerned about them having a reaction when combined than ruining the wood. i'm sure a bit of light sanding would've gotten rid of the excess paints as well it came out really nice tho! glad u took the shoddy paint job off it looks so much better. and yea i really miss these kinda cozier cleaning vids. it's always good to take breaks when feeling a bit of creative burnout. make sure to take care of urself also i'm dying at the twilight + jack sparrow. peak video making.

There are two YTers that I react this way to, Rachel and a gentleman called Pecos Hank-both people are genuinely kind, friendly, funny, and amazingly artistic people who create great content,. But they also just have such a great character that no matter what they put up on the channel, (whether it's what you expected or not), the video is wonderful. They just make you smile because of who they are and HOW they do their thing.

the ending of that day does sound awesome and I can relate to it so much! Even though in my case no sick poor kitty was involved, but instead just my sore muscles from dancing all night. i literally loudly sighed with pleasure when I settled into my couch and saw Rachel posted something today! 😀

I love your older hair videos, where you tried out different ways to style a scarf, and simple videos like that - I'm hopeless when it comes to styling my hair, so I can always use the inspiration! Also - shopping your closet and coming up with different outfit combinations based on what you already have, I love getting fresh ideas on how to style pieces in new ways.

For that vertical space in the cabinet at 1:41 : if you have a bunch of unused room and you don't know what to do with it, feels like the perfect time for some compartmentalization! I know it can feel like blasphemy to alter antique furniture in any way in order to install more shelves/hooks and whatnot, but what's more important is that you are the one using that item every day, so it should meet YOUR needs! Babying furniture and not letting it reach its fullest potential is a real disservice to yourself and the piece itself! :)

You using acetone on the paint reminded me of a lab I did in uni where I unintentionally found out that chloroform works remarkably well as a paint stripper. Unfortunately this knowledge is mostly useless but still ✨ science ✨

For all the years and years that I've enjoyed watching your videos, I've also always wanted to come over to your house and help you get more organized. When you couldn't find something or struggled to get something right, I've often felt that your clutter was an obstacle to your process and therefore impeding your happiness. Being messy is perfectly fine if it is part of your creative process and doesn't become a barrier to reaching your goals. In your case, it seems like disorganization was contributing to your suffering. I know you sometimes watch Tested, and I really agree that any time needing something you don't have immediately to hand blocks your next step, the obstacle's existence ripples out negatively into the entirety of the rest of the project.

I have a bit of a double-whammy with organizing: ADD and OCD. Not bad, but def. there. I've learned over the years that there is so much emotional exhaustion that comes with organizing it can be an impossible process to even start. For me, it's because I need the 'organized stuff' to be _perfectly_ organized, or I feel like I've accomplished nothing. _THAT_ thought stressed me out so much, (the perceived effort and worry about the ultimate failure), that my mind sets me up distractions as well-so that I don't have to go there and 'suffer'. ... Brains can suck. It probably would have helped if I'd spent some money on therapy rather than trying to figure this out on my own with my sabotaging brain, _buuuuut,_ what I've become a bit better at, (a bit), is _forcing_ myself to keep reminding myself that "It doesn't have to be perfect, it just need to be BETTER. Perfect will come down the road. Right now I need to THINK, and I can't with all this crap!" It's not a lie, either. So when I get this into my head, I can start organizing. And, (shocking, lol), I _feel so much better_ when it's done! I suddenly didn't need it to be perfect, anymore. Ugh-one's brain really can be one's enemy sometimes!!

LMAO The Twilight skit was great! ALSO, I, too have a gargantuan amount of crafting crapoloa that I've been needing to organize for about 20 years! LOL So, now that I have an actual home we actually own and I have a room dedicated to ME it's time. But, I've waited until I retired and promptly injured myself not once, not twice, but three friggin times that first year of retirement and I'm just now fully recovered enough to start! And you came out with this video and I am completely jazzed and ready to get started! Thanks, Rachel for this fun and inspirational video. Frodo is a wise doggo and will never fall for your sweet enticements to go outside when it will freeze his little doggy dingle off!

If you find that the drawers aren’t sliding, you can rub a candle along the track and it will slide very nicely. Paraffin or soy seems to work well (I used a Frankenstein candle I made out of coconut oil, beeswax and leftover Bath and Body Works candle, and it was quite soft and worked very well).

I'll admit I've fallen victim to the shabby-chic upcycling furniture trend but in my defence it was a garbage old IKEA dresser that I'd had since I was a child that would've otherwise been trashed. It's so much better when you have access to more money and more tools (and better furniture to restore/upcycle) to do literally any other style. You made the cabinet look so much better 😍

Right? I see so much "never paint anything!!" comments, but it should be never paint *everything*. Sometimes you can have or find a piece that's unfortunate to look at but otherwise useful or has an unfixable blemish that paint can hide. It does have a time and place, but shouldn't be the shortcut way to flip a piece of furniture.
@pinkcupcake47178 ай бұрын
The real heartache is seeing beautiful antiques be ruined by a shoddy paint job. IKEA furniture is the perfect target for furniture flipping and customizing.

I thought to myself, "if I were a medieval peasant, the idea of LOSING a huge sword would be so alarming and rediculous." Then I thought "gosh, I hope in a thousand years, guns are as innocuous as swords seem now" and then I realized no. No that would mean we invented something even Worse.

I loved the decluttering being putting things where they need to go and be better used. It is really hard to be a maker and declutter mean throw things away since we inevitably will need those things! But putting them in their proper space and making your barn more usuable was so soothing. I love this and I have been wanting some apothecary drawers forever for all my sewing, embroidery, and knitting equipment. They are just perfect for this! For the next time you strip paint off wood, I would suggest taking the drawers out to do this since itd be easier to scrape without accidentally shoving paint in a weird spot😅 but also some steel wool and some denatured alcohol works great to get the rest of crap that sunk into the grain since the steel wool scrapes into the grain. It may take up some of the stain so be cautious with it. Basically you did this step with the acetone, just steel wool wouldve worked better to get into the smaller bits of the grain. Then something like a Dutch wood oil, which my dad (my resident carpenter) showed me, works great for conditioning and protecting the wood but also letting the natural grain shine through. Would severely recommend wearing gloves with these chemicals though!!! Great work! I love how it turned out and all the organizing will make your life so much easier when you get that urge to make again.

I've made paper mache drawers out of beer advent calendar boxes - each box has 24 cubbies - and so far, I have 7 of those plus other sizes of paper mache drawers! As a labelling tip for your tool drawers, I have two types: "Wee sharp tools" and "Wee piddly tools" - the sharp has things like pokey tools, awls, etc. (no scissors - that's in another drawer...); the wee piddly tools include tweezers, nail files used in crafts, etc. It does really help to have "mis en place", doesn't it!

the painted cabinet feels are so relatable! i once found a lil dresser on marketplace that was "hand painted" and hideous, but it was the perfect size for my shoebox apartment. Don't get rid of your other cabinet, I imagine you need the storage. It just needs bins or baskets inside to contain things so they don't sprawl all over. This is how I know I've found my people. Many years ago my mom's friend knew I was looking for a bedroom set and they found at a thrift store a wonderful solid oak dresser with a huge triptych mirror. Glorious warm pretty wood. Absolutely everyone wanted me to paint it. I refused and have never regretted it. I wish I was the artsy to do tiny paint the sides of the drawers like little hidden art but I'm more of the sewing and knitting crafty than drawing and painting
