Is the tongue tip touching the front teeth? The sketch shows that it's above the front teeth though. Thanks!

Hi ma'am! this is Samiha from Bangladesh. Sometimes when I pronounce the letter 'n', my tongue tip comes in between upper and lower teeth. But I feel that it sounds native. So can I say that my pronunciation is okay?

Hi! I think you can definitely be understood when pronouncing the N this way! Usually I find that this creates a bit of an accented quality - but it doesn't get in the way of comprehension! :)

Good explanation, Rachel. I took an articulatory phonetics class when I was working on my Master's in TESOL. Our professor was from University of Michigan. Although she was an excellent professor, I think you do a better job of demonstrating how the sounds are made. I appreciate how slowly and patiently you present this information.

Do you touch the upper front teeth with the tongue? or is it the tip, front part/flap top position of the tongue? where exactly is it what part of the tongue exactly is it? Thank you :) One more question it the tongue wide when making T and D sounds as well?
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish Жыл бұрын
I do not touch the teeth with the tongue for T and D. The area is is the top part on the front of the tongue, near the tip. That's the part that should touch the roof of the mouth behind the teeth. The tongue will feel soft and wide, but not stretched. It's more of a neutral position lift. I hope that helps!

Hey Rachel, first of all, thank you (and Tom) for the great content you put in here. And now my request is: before I start to hate English for such a frequently used word to be confused with a dirty word, please make video on how "but" differs from "butt". Otherwise, every time I say but, I will have to feel the fear and anxiety of sounding like butt. Thank you!
@V1n2c3nt
@V1n2c3nt 2 жыл бұрын
"but" is a conjunction, which means that it is typically used to connect two clauses together. "butt" is more of a noun as it is a "thing"

Hey Rachel! Some American English Teachers say that every vowel sound before n, m, ng consonants will be nasalized is that true? I only know that "a" sound will be nasalized when it follows n m ng but l never new that other vowels will be nasalized too.
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish Жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, it's possible to nasalize any vowel that precedes a nasal consonant.

Once, a friend of mine from Oregon showed me one of your clips, considering it helpful to help me learning the right pronunciation of English words (I'm Italian). After a while she asked me if I watched your clips and if I found them useful...and I said:"Oh, yes! In particular I think it's very useful the framing in detail of her lips, because I got how to move my own lips for speaking appropriately...and, fuck...I kissed my screen three times at least!" No matter, your lips are sensual but, in particular, this joke I made reminded me of Sarah Silverman at the end of Jesus is Magic, when she kisses herself in the mirror (then I liked you twice!)...because you inspired me the joke.
