To me, the point of using a paper towel is actually that it’s disposable… so I use it to clean messes that I just don’t want to deal with. Like wiping pee off the floor, etc. so having a reusable paper towel that you have to clean just doesn’t make sense. Then just use a rag., or a cloth?

its so interesting how different countries feel about hanging things to dry vs using a drier. In new Zealand using a drier is a special thing that is only really done when its wet out and even then most house holds dont have one. it is very common for people to just hang things out to dry

Asafoetida is called hiing in India and a garlicky-smelling spice that is often put into lentil and chickpea dishes. Helps against bloating as well. In German it's also called "Stinkwurz" = stinking root, but that's mean. Its smell is potent and garlicky, but I don't think it stinks.

I love Penzeys for spices! As for the paper towel replacement, a better option are UNpaper towels by Marley’s Monsters if you want a purchasable option. You can also make your own with cotton flannel fabric in any print you like, cut to about 10”x12” (prewash and dry before cutting), and sew a zigzag stitch along the edges. Reusable, dryer safe, and they can be rolled onto an old paper towel roll!

Fats or oils in your compost will attract rodents! Also, slows the breakdown of waste. Not sure what chemicals are in that fat-solidifying product. I would avoid putting in compost, which might eventually make it into your garden and your food. Solidifying grease makes it easier to dispose of in the trash, though! Oats will also solidify the grease - and birds love the mixture.

i have " reusuable paper towels " there's a set i bought many a year ago that snap on the corners and you roll around a central tube that can slide onto a normal paper towel dispenser. They are machine washable and dryable but the snaps do clink in the dryer like a button on a pair of pants would so i would just keep that in mind. i have two sets that i swap back and forth. I have not bought paper towels in like ... 3 or 4 years. They are so old the branding has long worn off the center tube. That being said they have MANY different kinds on Amazon. 👍

I don't know about Canada, but in Germany you actually shouldn't throw the compostable bags in the compost. They're only compostable in theory. In reality, the bags don't meet the requirements - they don't disintegrate in the same time as the rest of the compost under the conditions prevailing in a composting facility. Also, oils do not go into the compost at all.

I used similar bamboo cloths when using cloth nappies, which means I was washing them at 60C and putting them in the drier. They held up great and long after the kids were potty trained I’ve still been using them in the kitchen for cleaning up spills. It took a while to get out of the ‘paper towels are for gross stuff to throw away’ mindset, but now every time I use kitchen paper I feel like I’m throwing money in the bin 😂. I keep a washing basket for them, towels, mop heads, and other stuff I wouldn’t want in with my clothes.

I bought a few rolls of bamboo paper towels a few years ago and quickly realised that they aren't paper towel replacements, they are just cloths on a roll. But they are fine for that. I still use paper towel for anything really icky that I don't want to rinse off but I use these for everything else. I usually just rinse them under kitchen tap for a couple of uses then just wash with a load of towels. I line dry them... but I line dry everything. They are really nice to use when new, they look ok once washed maybe 2 times then after that they are still useful but don't look very pretty, so then they just get used as cleaning rags. I cut a corner or 2 off just so I know not to put them back in the kitchen. I'll keep using them until they are gone but I don't think I'd buy them again.
