Rachmaninoff piano rolls are a unique piece of musical history. A piano roll is a music storage medium consisting of a roll of paper with perforations that control the playback of a player piano or other automatic musical instrument. These piano rolls were popular in the early 20th century as a way to enjoy live performances without needing to attend a concert. The Rachmaninoff piano rolls are especially prized by music enthusiasts and historians as they provide a rare glimpse into the playing style of one of the greatest pianists of all time. They also offer a fascinating contrast to modern recordings, as they capture the sound and style of an era before the advent of digital recording technology. Rachmaninoff's musicality and spontaneity is on show in all of his recordings, he never feels too confined to what's written on the page and instead freely explores, embellishes and decorates the music in an organic and improvisatory manner.

I second Dean's notion here! As someone dealing with chronic pain, this spritely tune accompanied by a lovely pinot noir makes for a wonderfully intimate night in. Sending my sincerest gratitude to Milbourn Music for the upload!

It's weird that Rachmaninoff expressed his hate toward impressionism, but he still wrote music like this... Although this is still romantic, but it's catogorized as post-romanicism or eclecticism.

I understand him. Impressionism mostly has a lack of a melodie/melodie development but he doesnt lack this

Just when you think it will be easy.... lol Either way, very Lisztian. I'm surprised it's written by Rachmaninoff.

Liszt never wrote a piano texture similar to this

@ulengrau6357 I agree. Rachmaninoff had more modality... the Slavic sound. And he was arguably more of a pianistic innovator than Liszt- I love Liszt, but Liszt more wrote virtuoso tricky finger-breaking stuff, but rarely with as much refinement or pathos as Rach. (Both break your fingers though)

I would argue that it almost sounds like Debussy in some parts, maybe because it sounds pentatonic sometimes but also because of the way there are lower melodies inside of that really brilliant accompaniment. I find this layering of voices quite often in Debussys work

In a way you are unironically right, this piano roll doesn't exactly represent Rachmaninoff's intentions. But allow us to imagine.
