Although the trombones could have emphasised the Dies Irae more, her playing was electrifying. A powerful and beautifully executed performance

At the start of this clip I meant - not the start of the piece.

IN THE BEGINNING IT WAS AS IF SHE WAS SENSUOUSLY CARESSING THE KEYS, MORE THAN STRIKING THEM. THIS SLOWER, DREAMY TEMPO WAS THE PERFECT APPROACH FOR ME, REGARDLESS IF SHE WAS FOLLOWING THE COMPOSER'S MARKINGS, OR NO. GORGEOUS, SPINE-TINGLING AND PROFOUND, THIS ENTIRE SECTION WAS SPRINKLED WITH STARDUST. I AM EAGER TO DISCOVER THE ENTIRE REVELATORY PERFORMANCE ON YOU TUBE.

I thought one of the string players dropped his/her bow. Ayako glanced toward the orchestra, but didn't let it distract her.
@untilltheday77 Watch Rachmaninov's own interpretations - reminiscent of Rubinstein's unsentimental yet emotionally powerful interpretations of Brahms and Chopin. You have to understand that Rachmaninov has been so over-sentimentalized that most of today's concert pianists see it as their duty to dig themselves out of that hole. Yes, there is a "real way" to play a piece - obeying the intentions of the composer as much as possible, while interpreting it with your own potent personality.

@arvidt1 I thought I was imagining things at first but then I remembered years of band and concert choir and recalled that light tinkling din HAD to be the sound of a baton hitting the stage floor. Too funny!

my only complaint was that some "genius" who uploaded this performance broke up the intro to what is probably the most famous variation (at the start of this video). Otherwise, quite lovely!

I have to agree on the 18th..... (Although it's being selected for music samplers.) I think the best variations in this performance are 13, 14, 15. I don't agree on the start- I thought it was as good as it gets.

I though it was all pretty good, except for the 18th variation (at the beginning of this clip) - things are a little too drawn-out and sentimental. The rest of it has that characteristic macho Rachmaninov approach that is the real way to play this repertoire - I just wonder why she couldn't be a leaner and meaner at the start.

The way she played the part you didn't like was UNCOMMONLY GORGEOUS, SPINE-TINGLING AND PROFOUND!
