All these 4 are amazing, but I gotta say, the rach 1 cadenza is my favorite moment in all his concertos. As a whole, my favorite is the 2nd concerto but rach 1 definetelly as some breathtaking moments

I never noticed the interest of the Rach 1 cadenza till now. Feels very influenced by Scriabin - the 'evil' unresolved notes and trills. Still Rachmaninov, but there is some cross-influence going on here. Then the big chords come in and it feels like the Rachmaninov we know.

Despite all the trash talk about his 4th, I think it's an outstanding concerto. Yes, it's not as cutesy and elegant as his 2nd or bombastic as his 1st, but the level of composition is much more sophisticated, regardless of which revision we're looking at. I can't rank them because I like all 4 equally.

I love the first 3 concertos (I don't know #4)--but if I had the technique to play them, I'd opt for . . . the Rhapsody!. I can't get enough of that masterpiece.

Yes, the first along with his second, third and (less popular) fourth and concertos by several others. Check out the Adolf von Henselt Concert in F, a wonderful concerto, said to be equally technically difficult to the Rach 3.

For me it represents the modernity in SR's later works - written 'in exile' from Russia. He appears to have integrated the 'feel' of American music especially, but that may be subjective. It is very dynamic in nature - the opening bars announcing this clearly.

One of my favorite Rach phrases comes very early in the 2nd piano concerto, when the low bass notes are hit rythmically just as the piece is getting underway. Some pianists don't take advantage of this genius creation by Rachmaninoff, but I love it when they do.

When I was a kid, learning to play the piano, someone gave me a vinyl with Rach 2 on it. I listened to it over and over and over; nearly drove my entire family crazy - no headphones of course. After years of this I was in a big city (Montreal) and I saw a record store. I went in looking for what I knew must exist, a recording of his 1st piano concerto (if there was a #2, there must be a #1, right?) There I found recordings of #3 and #4 as well. I bought everything. omg, couldn't believe it. With the war against Ukraine we avoid Russian anything these days, but what would our world be without all the astonishing Russian composers and artists? Russia, please, please rejoin the world community.

The cadenza of Rach 3 isn’t really near the end of the first movement, it’s more like a climax which then unwinds, but i totally agree that rachmaninoff writes epic passages, often with octaves towards the middle of his concertos, the pre climax in rach 3 as well as the developments of the main theme in rach 2, when the piano is not on melody but more climactic octaves

The funny thing is that you've highlighted two different types of typical moments here... in the 1st and 3rd concertos there is a cadenza, but in the 2nd and 4th concertos, there is no cadenza, so the really virtuosic piano part comes in the coda of the 1st movement.

Pianist Gary Graffman, in his delightful book 'I Really Should be Practicing,' says Eugene Ormandy kept trying to get him to play the second concerto cadenza, which doesn't exist. Graffman wasn't sure if Ormandy was simply making fun or checking his knowledge of the piece.

I would perhaps have to disagree with that being the most notable moment from his 4th Piano Concerto, although it is quite powerful. The section leading into and including the recapitulation of the main theme with the rippling cascade of piano arpeggios is stunningly beautiful and gave me shivers the first time I listened to it. It's also closer to the end. At the same time, I get that it's much more subtle and private than the moments you chose from his other Piano Concerti.

Yes! Rach is a genius at using repeated notes as a mechanism to bring enormous emotion and drama into play. You see this in many places, most notably in his famous cello sonata and again here in the 4th piano concerto. Other composers might avoid this technique that might get panned by the critics. Not our beloved Rachmaninoff.
