Olga is a world class pianist and a sweet lady. I met her on 2 occasions after concerts and spent time talking to her. She even helped me on two parts of the Rach 2 which I was learning at the time. Great performance here.

Yes in 2001 wonderful.

I think her performance of Rach 3 at 2001 Van Cliburn's is the best I've ever heard. I also really love Bronfman's and Volodos's takes, but if I'm being honest, if I'm in the mood for Rach 3 I usually just open up her video here on YT.

Of the many wonderful performances of the Paganini Rhapsody, for Me, this the finest.. Perhaps the most brilliantly choreographed partnership in a piece that can fall apart without the total partnership commitment between pianist and orchestra/conductor. Total cohesion. Such musical humanity from Ms Kern… the early slow variations were a miracle, with more personality than I’ve ever experienced. Technical brilliance from pianist and orchestra, Maestro New. Mimicking Ms Kern’s da da at 23:41… with the orchestra’s duplication? Priceless. The sound is first class, as is the video. Thanks so much for this incredible performance. I lived in what was THEN North Dallas… and can say it was a very good orchestra THEN… it is a magnificent orchestra NOW. God bless Ms Kern, Conductor, and members of this most terrific orchestra.

That piano is excellently tuned and regulated even though it doesn't have much brilliance. Bravo to the technicians and tuner! Thank you. She couldn't do it without you and we couldn't enjoy this without you. 👏
@CumiaBites2 жыл бұрын
Lol how can you tell if it’s regulated by the recording? You can only determine that from touch. Do you even know what action regulation is?
@republiccooper2 жыл бұрын
@@CumiaBites You're right. I can't know for certain. But it seems that she's moving easily alone the keys on the tougher sections. The Cliburn folks are also known to have their pianos well regulated. I've had friends who took part in their events and that's what they tell me over and over again.

I hear notes I never heard before and I heard this piece 100's of times. I play the 18th variation only.
@robertjason68852 ай бұрын
She is a consummate interpreter of Rachmaninoff. It’s been this way from childhood. Thus, left hand melodies and rhythms given their due, and the earlier slow variations, which other pianists just play, MsKern explores every nuance… while never sacrificing momentum. This is a performance that will reveal new things every time one returns. For me, that will be weekly. Time to subscribe to this channel.

I remember hearing her live at Zankel, Carnegie Hall, just after she won the Cliburn competition. It remains one of the few examples of perfect pianism and passionate control I have ever heard. What also stuck out was so how warm she was with us the audience.

The 18th starts at 17:20. Heart breakingly slow and tender. Just exquisite. Never heard one played with so much restrained emotion. Memories of your first kiss with your first love. Or you got a call from your love who broke your heart and you hear her voice and all the pain and joy comes rushing back, knocking you into your chair, catching your breath, and holding your heart.

If i were a billionaire with one of those 250 foot super yachts, I would have a Steinway Concert Grand installed into the salon deck and invite Olga to perform just for an audience of one. Pay her whatever fee she asked. And have the yacht anchored in St. Tropez, open all the windows and let her play this as the sun sets over the horizon. And the steward brings me my favorite cigar.

It would be a shame for others to miss it though. Tie the boat up to the dock closets to town, open the windows and let all passers by share the experience.
