The flow and openness at 5:33 is so moving, on of the most angelic melodies in existence.

Finest interpretation I have yet to find. There are a few tuning/blending inconsistencies within the ensemble; understandable given the difficult time in Russian history this recording was made. But musically this is absolutely unbelievable.

Rachmaninoff is the latest Genius who could compose and play like F.Chopin , he is one of the greatest Romantiker of 20. Century . This Performance is also GREAT.

One of the very best performances of the SD. Sound quality is astonishingly good as well.

Think that's a bit of an understatement. The 3rd symphony, Isle of the Dead and the Symphonic Dances make Rachmaninov, IMO, one of the greatest of all composers!

I am currently playing this in an orchestra and I honestly could listen to the bassoon part at 04:09 for ages, there's just something about it that makes me sad but happy at the same time. It's amazing when you are playing right in front of that, really beautiful.

We agree. As I age, Rachmaninoff's stature keeps growing in mind.

20 years ago, I heard the North Carolina Symphony play this, as an accompaniment to a ballet. I had never heard or heard of the work. I was absolutely stunned to discover the Master's last work, where he proved himself a fully competent 20th century composer. "Music should gush forth from the soul."

Thanks so much for posting this, anything conducted by the great Svetlanov is worth hearing even though some of his last recordings might have lacked earlier passion he was nevertheless one of the all time great conductors. This is marvellous!

It's the cellos with the violins in unison on that wonderful tune that makes me want so badly to play this with my orchestra.
