Racial bias found in health care company algorithm

New York insurance regulators are opening an investigation into UnitedHealth Group over allegations it uses a racially biased algorithm. A new study says the software led to lower levels of care for black patients than white patients. I've had doctors go off on me for having mental disabilities. Also haven't had an important surgery, because a doctor didn't like the fact that I'm disabled. It's crazy.

My transportation was cancelled by my insurance, now I don't go to the hospital. I have cancer and need to frequently go to my doctor's. It's too difficult to travel on public transportation. I'm on Medicaid and Health First. All the best Shaun of NYC

I hear u on that so that's why I try write the best I can . Wen I got fired and that same day they cancelled my insurance. For my PTSD and no the cost to get around is not cheap . But u put ur money in a insurance company and it take a few weeks to get it going and the day u leave are fired they stop that day . Ya they gave me options for medical coverage but if I didn't chose the one I did I have a higher deductible and pay more money for my meds. So the all have a catch to wat u can and can't do .

Medical insurance companies run a business after all, it's all about the bottom line. You can't blame them for taking advantage of the current system the same way you can't blame Amazon for not paying taxes. The rules need to change, and until they do of course companies are going to do everything they can to make/keep more money.

I think this is more about money, and we all know this prejudice can also effect how much money someone makes. I can see race and sex possibly being an issue if your dealing with racists and sexists though. My Mother and Father are both white but we have never had a lot of money or great insurance. My Father died from cancer almost 10 years ago, and even though he saw doctors and was tested on a regular basis, they didnt catch it until he was 4th stage and already dying from it. He lived for a week after his last visit to the hospital. My Mother just died from it 2 months ago and the exact same thing happened. She visited on a regular basis and also took a lot of tests, but it wasnt caught until it was too late. She died even sooner than my Father did after her last visit to the hospital. Im left with the thought the hospital knew it would cost more than they would get back and they ignored it until it couldnt be ignored no longer. You can turn this into sex and race all you want but money is the only language they speak. Inequality isnt always race and sex... it is also money. I know racism is a problem and sexism as well, but there is more to it than these 2 things. BUT, racism and sexism can effect how much you make or getting promotions which will increase the problems. I dont debate that, I know its a real problem. DONT IGNORE the obvious when it comes to money... especially in a capitalist country run by corporate donations. MONEY doesnt care what sex/race you are.

It probably wasn't an individual who consciously wanted to be racist. It was probably a team of predominantly white people who unwittingly forgot to take into account other races because of subconscious bias. It was human bias and error. I'm just glad it was caught. Hopefully, it can be recalibrated to accommodate everyone, regardless of race. And they should probably hire a more diverse team in the future to keep this from happening again.

Health studies may vary based on physical factors, including: height, weight, age, gender (sex, btw), body fat, heart condition, lifestyle, smoking/non smoking, and etc. But, skin complexion, biased behavioral and/or cultural conditions should not be a factor of insurance costs or health care treatment.

Well I'm not looking at race I'm looking at how much money it's costing . I make so much and the cost of living gas cause I commute daily. I suffer PTSD and every time I ask for help I'm always told to go to the emergency 😔. I don't need that I need affordable health insurance I pay rent car payment insuranc gass food give my daughter's mom money for her and still buy her things that my daughter needs after I spend 🤔300 a month on gas cause of the commute. With out med for PTSD 700 and I still therapy .so what about use I'm struggling to maytain with out my meds and just recovering from two pulled

The way AI works is you put information into it for it to learn. So if you only put an 18 percent sample size of black people into it, and the rest are white, the AI will overrepresent white people because that's the data it's working with. It's not that the AI is racist, it just didn't have a large enough sample size of black people to properly account for them. It's because of human bias, not the AI.
