Thank you. I rode on this line in 1984 with my wife and little girl. We rode on it because the kid was crazy for trains. We had a wonderful time and i have so many memories of that day. You can not explain to some one who doesn't know just how wonderful riding on a steam train is.

Great footage - interesting to me that this engine looks so “compact” - so many steam engines had such higher driving wheels
@coltonregal17972 жыл бұрын
The K-27 locomotives were built with their frames outside the wheels to allow for a much larger boiler without increasing the total height. As a result the engine looks compact like you mentioned, despite being quite large for its gauge.

Narrow gauge locomotives were NOT built for speed , but for Pulling Power ,Hence smaller driving wheels unlike Mainline standard Gauge locomotives of the Day .The narrow gauge rails , Sharp Curves and Mountainous track , required slower speeds and lots of Power : ) These locomotives performed exceedingly well on these narrow rails and steep curves .

Love the old steam trains. I live in a small town and the railroad known as the clinchfield railroad. Which we had a steam train that CSX got it gone from it's right home and now is in museum in Ohio. The railroad is just about gone here in our town and I wish that the towns people would get together and bring our steam engine back home where it belongs. It's very sad

My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🚋🚊🛤🚞🚝🚉🚈🚇🚅🚄🚃 especially steam locomotives 🚂 like 463. He says what he likes about it is its smaller size and high pitched whistle which makes it different from all the other steam locomotives on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. He also hopes that steam locomotive #497 is restored to operation soon and the line between Chama and Durango is rebuilt and used again as well as the line to Torrington and the Rio Grande Southern Railroad but he doesn't want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality! He hopes that the Denver & Rio Grande Western line to Santa Fe is restored and the line to Alamosa is either converted back to narrow gauge or a third rail is added so narrow gauge trains can run on it as well. He really believes that it would increase business in Durango & Silverton and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroads and give the passengers a change of scenery.

Out of curiosity, is the whistle on this locomotive original to it? Many of the other locomotives I have seen on the Cumbres and Toltec line have the Rio Grande "chime" whistle. I have ridden the Durango and Silverton line twice and the Georgetown Loop twice, but never got down to Antonito to ride this line. It is on the bucket list to do...
@WW2Hangar Жыл бұрын
That is a good question. Maybe someone will chime in to verify. I’m would love to go back and actually ride this one day 🍻 How are those trips?
@jgrahamiii7749 Жыл бұрын
@@WW2Hangar The Durango and Silverton is a water grade and is mostly about the scenery. The Georgetown Loop is only about 6 miles but climbs about 900 feet. There is a very high bridge where the locomotive crawls over it at less than 10mph. You can feel the bridge shaking..they use Shays sometimes to pull maybe 6 gondolas or passenger cars. I want to ride the Cumbres line partly because of the 4% climb from Chama to the summit. Having walked or driven a lot of abandoned railbeds, it would be cool to experience it as it originally was.
