feel like it's because games nowadays want to please all audiences and end up being shallow in every style they try to represent. We had the Tokyo Xtreme Racer franchise that brought a deep culture to the niche it represented. There was no need to add offroad cars to please everyone. We still have an audience for this niche, just look at how popular Night Runners was, made by one person.

For me, the addition of a few licensed cars to Hot Wheels Unleashed was a nice touch, but that doesn't mean that the entire roster should be made entirely out of licensed cars.
@Josh_Quillan

That depends on perspective. If you're more focused on gameplay, that's true, you can get by on HW origiinal designs quite well, but for a hot wheels collector, the fact that HW make licenced cars is the greater part of the point of collecting hot wheels so they really need to include a fair smattering of them.

I don't think car licenses are the reason there's no new Midnight Club. As you pointed out, GTA is the top of the "racing game" charts. So, why would they waste time/money on a separate SKU? And this is coming from 40-year game dev vet who worked on; the original NFS, Jet Moto 3, Road Rash 3D0, Grand Tour and yes... Midnight Club LA. From a dollars-in / dollars-out point of view, it doesn't make sense to Rockstar, licensed cars or not.

MotorStorm as far as I know has never used licensed cars, bikes, and ATVs. However most of those cars are based off of real cars. @@FelipePeletti Except even the car manufacturers have to realize how pointless and - quite frankly - how irrational that argument is. He's said it in at least one of his videos in the past, no one playing video games with cars is ever going to think less of the cars or manufacturers just because they got banged up in a video game. Why would they? Furthermore, it's not like they don't turn around and license their cars out to get smashed up in movies too. At the end of the day, it's all just a matter of companies having inflated egos and expectations. As long as you aren't doing obviously illegal or harmful things, the customer literally does not care what your brand goal and message is if you're simply selling a product; hell, most employees don't care about that either. Also, bold of you to assume Bugatti owners simply don't play video games. My enjoyment of video games would not simply end at the purchase of an expensive sports car...

Steam is actually the single biggest gaming market outside of mobile. Now, admittedly, most of those are people with potato PCs and such, but even when just looking at people capable of running the newest triple A games (using the Steam hardware survey), we actually still get really close to PS5 numbers. Also it's really funny that in the same game companies like Pepsi or Burger King or whatever will pay to have their brands in the game, while car manufacturers have to be paid to allow their cars in them.

i like real cars in games, the prices the manufacturers ask are way too high, the only games that does not seem weird to drive unlicensed cars are the gta games, because they tailor the brands to be like the real brand, not only their cars, it feels like they are part of the universe, not just a way to reduce the cost of the game, even watch dogs feels weird on the cars side

Here's the thing with GTA 5/Online though... It kinda sucks as a racing game. There's the horribly unbalanced economy, the extremely inconsistent vehicle performance, the underwhelmingly slow top speeds of even the faster cars, the traffic that steers into you, the playerbase that famously can't drive, the lack of viable shortcuts, no nitrous, nonsensical vehicle classes, lack of performance classes, almost no unique customisation options in the vast majority of cars (let alone decent options), the terrible police chases, the bland handling, the inability to drift apart from that tyre option in a few specific cars that make them terrible for everything else, the extremely low rewards for racing, no manual gearbox option, no pink slip races, extremely distant and high-up camera for newer cars, the fact that a huge amount of cars were removed from the websites, the crappy interiors and crappier dashboards, etc. And keep in mind that Midnight Club's main selling points were the sense of speed, extremely in-depth customisation, small maps, very high difficulty, ridiculously overpowered bikes, extremely fast police, and tons of shortcuts and jumps. Things that all GTA games (apart from, debatably, 1 and Chinatown Wars) seem to go against completely.

This problem has been going on as well in ROBLOX out of all things, car brands being removed due to people contacting car manufactures, and now some big titles, like SWFL (southwest florida), are now switching to unbranded cars and making some masterpieces of fan based models that they are going to implement some time in the future. Another thing is that "realistic" games on ROBLOX have been becoming more popular, with like frontlines and some other car driving games going for the graphical and movement feel to be more realistic instead of more enjoyable for the player.

I think we need to go back to having a balance there were so many games that didnt have licensed cars and they were so fun a good recent example is Night Runners doesn't have licensed cars but its so much fun I kinda miss when we used to have so many games with non branded cars and its a ton of fun I think we should focus on making a fun Racing game from here on with or without Manufacturers

Nah bro, this would end up like Cal of duty route where they don't license guns & the franchise went downhil. Also this would allow publishers to charge us the same for games while paying less for manufacturing them, but not investing it in the franchise, just keeping it for themselves.

Car X street should be coming to PC soonish and eventually come to console. That game is so good even without licensed cars. The customization is so in depth and the physics honestly feel pretty great even on mobile.

Car manufacturers should pay game Devs to be in games. So many JDM cars would not be as popular in western society without games like NFS and midnight club.

Well certain games most definitely need licensed cars especially if they are already established titles with licensed vehicles like Gran Turismo, Forza, NFS, and even Midnight Club. I’d even argue that Blur made the right call by using licensed cars because in it’s poor marketing, what was kind of seen as a Mario Kart meets Need For Speed Underground vibe which didn’t really exist in the racing game market. Games like Split Second, and Burnout use fun gameplay and damage physics to not need real cars. However when racing games center around car culture, there is a right way and wrong way to use unlicensed vehicles. The right way to do this is the way CarX and Night Runners is doing it. Basically just use the real cars and change the name. The wrong way to do it is the way Super Street video game did it.

How about Split/Second, which it never had licensed car manufacturers but only came out with one game.

Racing games without licensed cars allows for developers to get more creative with their designs. Licensed or unlicensed cars really doesn't matter to me, I just need the game feel to be fun and smooth with great varied environments and a banging soundtrack. I much prefer arcade racing over sim/festival racers

Makes no difference if the cars are real life models or not. What truly matters is the driving physics, gameplay feel and sounds. BeamNG has a brilliant physics and damage engine yet still needs to work on sounds, the vehicle modelling is alright for now. I still play GTA 4 to this day because of the driving physics - still fun for hours on end while being chased by the police. Do a video on GTA 4 mate!

I don't understand why game companies pay companies for licences at all. Usually manufacturers of goods pay media companies to feature their products and we call it product placement, it's well established to work really well as a form of advertising. Entire movies are financed like this. Why are games any different? We know now that gaming is officially the biggest entertainment industry in the world and it needs to start acting like it. All game companies should make an agreement together to not pay to licence in-game stuff any more and instead agree to receive payment or only agree to no money changing hands either way for featuring brands, whether it's cars, guns, music, clothing, drinks or whatever. And also, licencing is controlled by the terms of the licence, and they need to get better at dictating those terms. They need to stop signing licences that expire and cause things to be pulled from sale - these need to be perpetual licences and include a specific carve-out to protect streamers who are playing the game online so they don't get copyright-struck.

In licensing, the devs are the one approaching the manufacturers asking if they can use their product. In advertising, it's the manufacturers approaching and asking the devs if they can add their product in. Whoever's the one approaching and asking is at a disadvantage because it means they need the deal more than the other party does.

@@NerfMaster000 So this is why I'm saying the whole gaming industry should agree to just stop asking. The manufacturers would come calling sooner or later.

I prefer "arcade" racing games but the tamer side of it with games like OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, Midnight Club 3, (classic) Test Drive Unlimited, and, of course, the late, lamented Project Gotham Racing series. Those games all had licensed cars (yeah, I know the first two Midnight Club games didn't), with the drawback of only having either no damage or light damage modelling at most but I'm fine with that.

Honestly a new Watch Dogs game or even a Farcry game could have some proper driving based seperate missions cause they both have driving on their game. But they dont do it for some reason. Also you should play some need for speed the world.Honestly it is fun to play coop with someone else while escaping police in that game. The community of nfs world revived that game.

Problem with the popularity of racing games rn is that its not the best value for money, especially in a world where you have games like gta and cyberpunk as some of the top games, where they have those same systems implemented on top of everything else they have. Yeah its not perfect, but at the end of the day its better value. Racing games have to come infinitely harder when it comes to features and content because theyre already at such a disadvantage.
