All conservatives are not religious. I’m conservative and don’t believe religion should be taught in public schools. Don’t think many conservatives want that. We just don’t want our kids indoctrinated with political correctness, identity politics, anti-capitalism, etc.
@AleadaA6 жыл бұрын
No not most -This is not religious fundamentalism although there are some strict Bible schools. Most conservatives believe in discipline & respect towards teachers - so they can do their job instead of babysitting. Teaching the fundamentals of math -science - logic - how to read & how to take a test - philosophy - the great thinkers of all time - the classics & history. Also rewarding learning & independent thinking. Also arts & some physical fitness & competitive sports. Also fundamentals of a trade education & business also can be a pathway to a good future.This is about choice -you may want your children to continue with a superficial education go ahead & continue in the public school system as it is presented today -but if you want your children to succeed in life vote in school choice & vouchers & a better distribution of funding per student - not based on property tax. Research schools that have succeeded using the later approach & see the difference.

Oh my gosh Dave I just cannot even tell how much this is probably the best interview you’ve had on for me. I’m at a middle school teacher and this woman’s philosophy of education totally aligns with my own. And I make no excuses and no apologies for expecting my kids to work hard and do better than they did yesterday. I wanna almost cry I am so thankful someone out there actually agrees with me because I work with a team of teachers who make excuses pamper the kids dummy down the education and it’s a palling to me. I just felt like I’ve been out on a lone island all by mysel so from one Southern California teacher, thank you so much for having this lady on. It's depressing to watch the videos on racism and education and realize that it was fully explained (for America at least) by Thomas Sowell back in the early 70s, and likely earlier by others. My wife finished a master's in Teaching English as a Second Language, and I saw first-hand how much bullshit (anti-capitalism, white privilege, etc..) they are feeding these educators. I can elaborate if needed, but it gets frustrating fighting the same damn fight over and over. Smh.
@bensmith82406 жыл бұрын
Nick. Agreed. I actually told my wife to put that line in one of her response essays. Funny enough, it was a question/statement about how Martin Luther King Jr. opposed capitalism, but it was presented/disguised in a very duplicitous manner. Not necessarily promoting socialism, but rather pointing out perceived shortcomings of capitalism while using words like equality, equity, and "understanding." Most education majors would find it hard to refute this line of argument because they have limited knowledge of economics and business. We ended up agreeing to exclude the line because we're adults and good grades trumped insignificant ideological battles. Over the years, I've found it funny how the University has given my wife thought provoking classwork on strategies to motivate students on an individual level without disparaging their culture, home-life, or race, and then, in the next damn breath, they assign an essay on class guilt (white privilege). Totally contradictory, but that's higher level learning in the field of education. *Edited for grammar & clarification.

I don't know. I'm reading these comments and I see a bunch of anecdotes but no comprehensive data. I agree liberals can be close-minded sometimes, but libertarians and conservatives have the same time. I don't know. I see people merely venting that academia disagrees with them (like the lady in the video) but they ignore that maybe academia disagrees with them because data shows people like her are wrong.
@bensmith82406 жыл бұрын
I disagree that these experiences should be called anecdotes because, in my case, the information is being presented to a classroom full of educators, who in turn provide guidance to young children. Educational opinions in higher academia are rarely corrected by any kind of market mechanism, and they can reach a vast audience by the time they filter through the educational pipeline.

Well done Katharine Birbalsingh for achieving and proving all that is wrong with our current failing education system. Back in the 1980/90s I retrained from Industry and the RAF to become a Maths/IT Teacher, regarding discipline, exam results and getting on with pupils/parents I did extremely well and achieve DH status in record time. My methods (where I could) were very much in keeping with Katharine especially with tough and disruptive pupils where I believe schools should be 'teacher centred' and not 'child centred'. Unfortunately I did not have the caliber, most likely intellect and political ability that she has, as after 16 years of constant battles with left wing teachers, criticism and often jealousy of my successes, I was eventually worn down and became ill, so I left a job I loved and was good at. Seeing the success Katharine is having, especially in London where I grew up in, is an absolute delight and I really wish her well. Teaching especially in deprived areas is not really difficult, since the sixties with the taking over by liberals implementing half-baked constantly failing psychologist theories on child behaviour (ie Piaget, Chomsky and Skinner) we now see the damage of listening to them. Her school, the news of (not surprisingly) excellent exam results, good behaviour in a rough area many visits by educationalists from other countries and that she intends to open up another one, is for me (who tried but failed) is a beacon of hope that it is possible to turn back the tide. I truly hope the powers to be are watching, Boris and Gavin Williams take note, teaching training colleges (total waste of time and just left wing indoctrination centres) totally revamp and certainly some form of recognition such as a Baroness for Katharine - because I can assure you, I know so 'very well' what she has managed to do, is absolutely incredible. I truly wish I could meet you and shake your hand, even though going and doing well out side teaching, now retired and 67, it is those darn 'tough' kids who I put in so much time, effort and stress to show there was a better way than ending up in prison which I so nearly did as troubled and difficult teenager. Not as many as I would have liked but now looking back over my life at my achievements, it is those moments coming across those kids as adults, shaking my hand and saying 'Thank you so much Sir, if not for you, I would most likely be in prison or dead' that means so much and I am so proud of. Now watching the news and seeing what is going on, and in my opinion the mind boggling decline (especially discipline) in schools, the damage of political correctness and at times close to tears of hearing of children taking their lives due to bullying - I truly despair at what left wing liberal ideology has and continues to do to our schools.

Having worked in education for 5 years, and working with the most challenging children, including in a 'special' school for those who have all been expelled from mainstream, it really boils down to the parents and how they treat their children, or even lack of parent. I've never met a child who is struggling who has had full, appropriate and consistent parenting. It's a joke that so many parents blame schools for the behaviour of their children. These children are even worse at home than they are at school. What they ultimately need is high levels of nurture along with high levels of boundaries. One without the other or none at all will result in failure. As for racism... I live in a town where it is easily 95%+ white people, yet race has never been an issue here, and especially in school. I have absolutely no idea where this 'teacher racism' is.

Isn’t it a shame that this kind of inspiring, motivational, self-belief creating attitude is now considered as right-wing in education and politics. She reminds me of many of my immigrant friends and work colleagues (Filipino, Indian, Chinese, Jamaican, Pakistani and Moroccan mainly) who have done well in Britain and Canada (where I have lived and worked), and who have worked really hard, achieved career success, financial security and a future for their families. We all know bigotry can exist out here in the real world in one form or another, but surely the mindset she encourages is a thousand times more beneficial and healthy to kids then a victim mentality and a self-fulfilling prophecy attitude of almost guaranteed failure due to skin pigmentation.

Banning speech and punishing hate speech will do nothing to actually reach anyone and change minds from such blatant racism. I don’t hold any illusion that such a meeting would be easy, but she did it. The more that sort of thing can happen the more hope I have. I love you Dave Rubin.....no homo, lol. For real tho, you talk to everyone and really try to find answers. I wish I could have the conversations you have. Cis-Hetero white guys just aren’t allowed to discuss things anymore. Don’t get me wrong, we can totally talk about issues, but only if are views match the ideological perspectives of those we’re talking with. This sucks because I love having real in depth conversations with people I disagree with. I want to learn, but I also know I won’t always agree and that just isn’t acceptable anymore. I have no issues with anyone, I even use preferred pronouns and have a plethora of gay friends, but I never say what I really think when complicated issues come up. It feels a bit isolating to be honest.

If you are looking for deep conversations do not watch Rubin. His show is an echo chamber for right wing ideas. You would be surprised if you knew how many religous people, climate change deniers and white identitarians see Rubin as an ally. This is because all he does is bash the left which attracts alot of wingnuts form the right. Just watch "Nightmare Fuels " videos on Dave Rubin, it might take you an one to twon hours and then I promise you that we can have a conversation about big ideas.
@travisc69066 жыл бұрын
Joel Lundqvist I watch shows and read articles that the left presents as well. I like Dave because he listens to views and tries to understand them. If you believe the left is any less of an echo chamber than the right you are mistaken. Those groups see him as an ally, not because he agrees with them on a few issues (like maybe 10% because he’s not a racist or a fascist) he supports their right to speak. The fact that being allowed to state your opinions to be heard and disagrees with is something that can lead anti-Semitic white supremacists to see a gay Jew as an ally should tell you everything about how vitriolic much of the left has become towards discourse. We need to hear the wrong ideas as well as the right ideas, because only then can they be confronted and expelled. You can’t eradicate them through suppression, only reason. All silencing does is drive the views underground and give them legitimacy, it has the opposite of the intended outcome and I see it as part of the reasons those views are becoming so resurgent.

Really cool, just the other day I was talking with my friend about affirmative action and how it attempts to remedy the issue of success for the average black person without really telling them how to succeed in the first place. Now without affirmative action there is still the issue of black success and the solution we came to was very much on the side of empowering the teaching roll in society. Allowing teachers to bring discipline to the classroom and teach values like personal responsibility on top of math and language would help fill the holes left by less than ideal family structures and give all kids a fighting chance. Anyways really glad to see someone more educated and experienced than myself speaking out about similar ideas; love the show. ^^

Friend of mine left teaching at a black high school to teach at the jail instead. At the school the classrooms are wild because the kids know the principles are forced to report low numbers of black youth infractions (thank you, Obama). Once in jail they really want to learn, plus the classroom is disciplined. Some people need discipline from their environment as they don't have it internally.

I was thinking about the idea of monoculture with regards to biodiversity. Monoculture is dangerous because it is vulnerable to catastrophic failure the same way a one size fits all government run school system can be. Monoculture doesn't have diverse genes to fallback on when bugs or disease are introduced and it is only optimal in one type of environment. It seems a fitting analogy in the same way that the old adage of "don't put all of your eggs in one basket" applies.
