Max Von Lowe You know good and hell well no one is about to come on a KZbin channel that largely caters to a white audience and start naming names. Even if that was not the case, naming names and location on a YT channel in the comments is NOT the way to go about addressing anything as serious as racism if the goal is to get results.
@JJohns1980
@JJohns1980 4 жыл бұрын
Max Von Lowe I better understand your question after reading your comment. I also understand that most Black people don’t necessarily openly share every aspect of racism we experience. Not even with other Black people. Most successful Black people find ways to continue to move forward despite the systematic hurdles we face. It’s simply safe to assume that every successful Black has experienced some form of racism at some point. We don’t achieve any level of success without having experienced it. It happens every day be it micro aggression or overt. We just decide to move forward and not let it trip us up. That’s how we get to what others perceive as “success”.
@JJohns1980

Max Von Lowe You are not stupid. People don’t name names for fear of retaliation, which always happens. Some forms are subtle retaliation and most forms are overt. That’s the difference between me and a lot of people. I name names because I stay ready for all the smoke. People are not going to name names on a social media post. That’s the dumbest thing anyone could do. I always recommend people follow the proper professional channels to raise their issues. But most people are afraid of the consequences that come with naming names. I wish I could get more people to overcome that fear. You are tired of listening to people talk about race. Imagine how tiring it is to experience racism and then have to relive the bullshit by talking about it to make sure people are held accountable for their racism. I promise you are not as tired as the victims of racism. Not seeing color is a part of the problem. As a Black person, I have never in life ever been ashamed of my race or skin color. No matter how tough it has been in America due to racism. I pray every day that when my time on earth comes to an end, if I should come back, please dear God send me back as a Black person. I see skin color. Most people do. The more people try to distance themselves from seeing skin color, the more it makes you appear to be in denial.

I'm a retired first class petty officer who feels the climate of the military frowns upon racism. In my 20 year career I was called the "n" word once but I never reported and laughed about that Shipmates ignorance. On a another occasion I was station aboard a naval ship (not going to name) in the early 90's that was investigated for a climate of racism from top to bottom. Actions were taken by military brass and the environment was cleaned up. I would say due to the brotherhood family structure of the military, racism is very much frowned upon.

I experienced obvious racism twice in the military. I have also met so many people who just never met a black person and was genuinely curious, even though their curiosity came across as racism. I am very gregarious so I have all types of friend. The racist people will typically only say racist things when I am not around because they feel safe amongst other white people and not expect them to say anything. I would later hear about it. I was in the Amry infantry and typically the only black person. With that said, although there is racism in the military, very few people have malice intentions, the rest are just misinformed and mean no harm.

Pretty much all of this; Racism is a product of ignorance, whether it's maligned or not. It's why I don't believe that racists are stuck in their frame of mind. They'll come around when they realize nobody subscribes to them, but you have to start that conversation. It's not tolerated in the military, and people can get booted for it as a failure to adapt. Any kind of racism I encountered as a Latino was in jest, and the context of those jokes was always taken into account, but hey, if you don't feel comfortable with jokes like that, respectfully tell them it's not cool, that's it. We know it takes a team effort to succeed, and racism doesn't contribute to success, anyone can recognize that. You have to trust your teammates, your platoon, your leaders and peers. Racism doesn't allow that, and thankfully, those individuals are few and far between.
@manuelsteele8030
@manuelsteele8030 Жыл бұрын
This is the type of racism that is more common these days - covert racism or subtle racism with microaggressions. A good example is a white person who voted for Obama but locks the door at the sight of a black male, Native American male, or other minority groups (e.g. Samoan) in broad daylight at a grocery store parking lot (e.g Publix in FL). The problem is that whites in authority will often (1) not recognize it or (2) blatantly dismiss it. In the corporate setting, some minorities have evolved to understand "playing the game" to gain longevity, promotions, etc. by identifying and maneuvering around such sophisticated racism or at least minimizing its impacts.

As a fellow sailor, I have to tell you that racism is VERY common in the military, especially in the Navy. I experienced it every step of the way of my military career. I'm in intell and with it being a Caucasian dominated field, most times causes me to be the only African-American in my shop at times. Thinking they have me out numbered, some co-workers will take shots that I will quickly correct. Makes me wished I stayed in Mississippi instead of joining sometimes.

Thanks MA2 Alexander for doing this video and I think it is super important that you posted this. As an Asian American who served in the Navy from 06 to 11' I can assure you that I myself have dealt with racism and there were initially from the people that I've come across with in the beginning but eventually served and got along with in the end. Even white people in my command dealt with racism whether they're Irish, Italian, Ashkenazi Jew, Polish, Scandinavian, from the South whatever. I even witnessed my fire control leading petty officer who's a first generation Australian American got sick and tired of people imitating his accent and basically told them off. However, this shouldn't hinder anybody from joining the military and there are multiple of people in service that have family members outside of their race. The racist people in the military are usually the type that barely have any friends and are disliked by the command.

I honestly think you should have asked more people in different rates. From my understanding when I see MA’s standing watch y’all have more time to bond instead of be disrespectful to another to help the time pass. As well as when conducting training that involves you to use brute force everyone’s gotta be on the same page. Also you should have talked to a black female. It’s a big stereotype in the Navy that they give us. I’m a black female engineer. I have never experienced racism until I joined the Navy. I’ve been in for 5 years. Engineering is predominantly white from my experience. I have alway been the only black person. Plus I am female so it’s a double whammy for me. Other than that I liked the direction you were going with this. Good luck to you!

Weather it keeps me from getting rank or not it's still around I tend to lift those up by working with them that have been put down a lot of the time there are cliques but I ignore the bias parts and move forward to where I am most needed. I have about 7 years left so I am looking forward to being a positive impact in my unit and or future units.

Thank you for speaking on such a difficult subject. First I would like to say that Racism in the military, just like in most areas in our nation is no longer overt. Many do not understand that Racism is more than an instance or action someone does to someone else. Racism is systems that have been put in place and are fully functional today that limit the advancement of others. I served for more than 12 years and was on a trajectory to possibly do well from a career standpoint. However, I was subjected to so much covert racism, that I could no longer take it. I have had senior leaders target me, tell me I am their “servant and I will do what I’m told.” When I asked them to explain them it was “Oh Some of my closet friends are black!” (Immediate defense for racists comments).I have had officers flat out lie on me and demean my character and work ethic to the point that my responsibilities were taken away before the other person even met or worked with me. That is Racism. Taking the word of another person as fact; even when the accused and countless other leaders say otherwise. Racism is subtle. Racism is the fact that there is only about 1% of African Americans in the upper echelons of military leadership; when African Americans make up nearly 12% of the service men and women in our ranks. Racism is asking one black person to speak for an entire population; and taking that single opinion and saying “we have debunked a myth.” And again racism is often so unseen that someone who has been discriminated against (MA1) may not even know it. The experience MA1 shared we’re definitely examples of racism and it may not have affected him but he said it bothered him.To say that you have experienced racism is also saying that you have been victimized. Something at many people are unwilling to accept. This is not having “thick skin” this is not dealing with the issues and pretending you’re not affected when you are...Most people who think critically will struggle in military settings... I would recommend you bring on someone that has experienced racism to challenge your opinions. Not just interview someone who agrees with you. That’s how you have a dialogue that all are able to grow from... again thank you for sharing your opinions...

I am not in the military but retired from law enforcement. Both services are somewhat similar, one military and one para-military. I believe both services are microcosm of our society and therefore racism exist in both. That being said there are better mechanisms in both services to deal with it and hopefully stop it as opposed to general society where people are allowed to express themselves no matter how vile. I truly love the courage of the "New Generation of service members". I'm an old soldier from the 70s. And I just love seeing the content (Videos) etc. DOD should continue to let you all speak the truth with censorship. These are smart kids!!!! So proud of them!

Good video bro but I gotta say that is the perspective of two MAs. People watch there mouths around you more then they do other rates. As a BM I have seen it and I have even received it. I have also talked about it often with my fellow sailors to break the barrier. But good on you for not saying away from the topic.

MA1 reminds me of myself. Not paranoid about racism and is very considerate of people from other walks of life. Sadly alot of people of my race walk around with a chip on their shoulder about it, which is ironic considering the amount of pride they claim to have.

I respect you for putting this out there but I'm an e-5 on the air del side and there is definitely racism in the Navy. I'm a black male from the west coast and I honestly think that where your from factors into it too. Props to you though bro. I know you got out so I wish you nothing but the best. You're a pretty positive dude from what I can see. I know you'll be successful out there.

A nation founded on hate, opression, theft, rape, racism, salvery and and murder can not abandon the principles it was built on and still maintian power. Acccepting truth is a very hard thing to do because it requires letting the ego die which is very painful. I took me 44 years of lying to myself before I accepted what I had witnessed my entire life as reality..

I am a Native American female by birth 😉 and Navy Veteran by choice💪🏽. I loved my time in the service! I don't remember any racism towards me. It was not something that I saw happen. I actually only "saw" race when it came to clubbing. That was when I saw more of a division of race. However, it was not seen as bad, but just as people who happened to enjoy the same type of music because of how they grew up. I mean, there was even a techno group! No offense! I came to love techno while stationed in Italy. My best friend in the Navy was Filipina and we hopped around to different clubs and I don't remember anyone having a problem with us being there. Many times we were the only ones of a different race who were there!

I think the military gas come a long way with respect to race and I find that service people in general are far more in tune with diversity than the general population; mostly through experiences and positive influences dispelling the myths about dark skin people. A lot of Vietnam vets said that racism was pretty blatant during that era and worse yet in WWII according to my father's experiences. I like where the military is now and where it's going on race.
