I produced this video for Navyformoms.com. It's a great look inside of Navy boot camp. It was shot in 2 days at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes. Enjoy...

Well, boys and girls, I would tell you about Boot Camp at Great Lakes in 1951 but you'd probably think it was just another old Sailor's 'Sea Story'-- But never forget that serving in the U.S. Navy is an honorable profession. Chief Petty Officer, USN, (1951-1973 ) Ret,

Simulates sights, smells and sounds of a ship? You mean hairy half naked men walking around in towels. The smell of JP5, diesel exhaust, anti fungal creams and farts. The sound of said farts, catapult launches,1MC announcements and nerds playing Magic and Dungeons and Dragons? I didn't get any of that on my stay onboard the USS Recruit in RTC San Diego.

I had one RDC who sounded like Barney Rubble. Made it doubly funny when he stormed through and said "Get the Hell Out of your rack!" :D

Ha ! I thought I was in heaven when they installed bunk lockers on my ship. Before that we had these tiny square lockers. I was on a ship built in 1944.

I pushed recruits at RTC Great Lakes from Sep 84 to Jul 87. Today's RTC may as well be on a different planet. The new facility is incredible, and, while it took some time, the Navy did listen to our drop comments . It looks to me as if our new shipmates are getting training which is much more applicable to the fleet than what they got when I was yelling at them. BTW, that new wrought iron sign above the gate to Camp Porter has a creepy "Arbeit Macht Frei" vibe to it.

I was at RTC Orlando, Dec'72-Feb. '73. It was totally different back then...Had the Blue Jacket, and the Fire Fighting was out doors. barracks was sleeping/living quarters, only. Chow hall was separate building...

I retired from the Navy in 1994, sure... it is easier in some ways now, but the technology we have now allows for creation of more challenging scenarios for the recruits too.

When did they build those new barracks? The one I was in was run down as hell. Ah memories. That phone center hasn't changed a bit. PROTIP: If you want to make more phone calls during your training, just tell them you need to go to legal to deal with some issues from back home. Payphone in the waiting room.
@davedavison77438 жыл бұрын
So much different than my nine weeks in hell in the 1970's. We had one mess hall and thousands standing in line waiting a long time to eat. We got drilled, yelled at, treated like garbage, and toughened up. Maybe the training is more high tech these days, but I worry that we depend more on automation these days than each other. I love the Navy just the same!
@ywc9941112 жыл бұрын
Hell Yeah. No phone at all. RDC will let you make another phone call couple weeks after you arrived.

these movies are well shot, well written and informative. they would be just as interesting without the gimmicky editorial mutli-cuts and transitions. i always tell people 'if you make it flash and blink enough, the viewer will come away with the illusion of having had an experience. it's better to give them a real experience.' in this case your movies really do have good experiences, so you don't need all the superfluous (and distracting) trickery.

The uniform has changed horribly, and I think they softened up a bit since then. I know the CC's can't be as rough and physical as years past, but bless the kids for joining, it will serve them well. Myself, Orlando 1982 and still wearing a military uniform everyday...
