You're in the heat of a match, and suddenly, your strings snap in the middle of a crucial rally. What's your next move?
The rally has ended. Now, what would you do if you had only one racquet? In this video, I'll share two common scenarios and one uncommon Broken String Scenario.
RELATED RULES Q & A - 2024 Friend at Court Handbook of Rules and Regulations
Q1: During a point, a player accidentally breaks the strings. Can the player continue to play another point with this racquet?
A1: Yes, except where specifically prohibited by event organizers.
Q2: Can a player tie off the broken strings and continue to play?
A2: Yes, if the tie-off knots are outside the pattern of the crossed strings (i.e., at the grommet or frame), similar to placing a vibration dampener on the strings.
NOTE: The player would have to do it quickly if between points due to the 25-second rule for continuous play.
NOT MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO
Sam told me that he initially borrowed a racquet from his opponent, but he felt the racquet head was too heavy. Although I didn't know what kind of racquet that was, I told Sam that he probably felt that way because of the excessive wear on the top of the head of his racquet.
