I installed this on my 2020 RadRover 5 and couldn't be happier. I have a 14 mile commute with a 600 foot elevation change and have done it with full cruise control (you need to review that feature) with only one notch off the battery. Great upgrade even with the undersized stock motor. Honestly I wouldn't buy a RadRover without planning on this upgrade.

My suggestion, I've installed 2 of these controllers, is to use the bracket that comes stock on the bike. The tabs on the controller are too thin so at Lowes/Home Depot they have short 4' lengths of aluminum bar stock, get the half-inch wide bar. Then head to their nuts and bolts section and find some ms-80 (I believe that's the number) bolts at two and a half inches long and corresponding nylon threaded bolts. Cut the bar to span the 2 mounting holes on the new controller then use the stock bracket to mark the holes on the aluminum bar. Mount it up normal but run the two bolts through the bracket, the controller, then the bar, tighten it down and it is secure. You have to loosen the bolts to twist it by hand. It's simple, inexpensive, no special tools, looks like the factory did it and the parts are easy to find.

Bought a similar kit from another company and I fully agree the performance upgrade has been incredible and worth every dollar! I accepted the fact that I was going to see diminished battery life and yes...that was the case/ My commute is mostly flat and about 20.5 KM round trip. Typically I get home with either 2 bars of 4 or even a single bar, depending on throttle usage. I plug in it to charge every night so it hasn't been an issue. I am wanting a little more range now so have purchased the 52 Volt 17.5AH and will install this weekend.

I bought a Rover back in 2019. Last year added the Bolton controller update (in 2022 now "Area 13 e-bikes"). The kit includes the controller and the necessary display. A month later I upgraded the BATTERY. Bottom Line First: Controller upgrade - Worth it, totally! Battery upgrade: Worth it: totally! With the controller and battery upgrades my bike is a speed demon. Its "top end" is about 30 mph, acceleration is not about 30% faster. As in this video, listening to the acceleration pitch one can HEAR the difference in power and acceleration; IOW it even sounds faster. Bonus Tip: Area 13 on its website tells you which Rad bikes the controller upgrade will function. AFAIK (and remember) it works on many different year Rad Power bikes, and a number different model Rad bikes. Check his list. Anyway, I agree with everything CC says. Some Tips: - Yes, those cables are a hassle to deal with. Tip regarding the cable connectors: Like CC did, turn your handlebar anti-clockwise (as if making a left turn). This gives the cables slightly more play, which you need to pull the cable couplers/connectors that are inside the down tube. - On mounting the controller to the bike: I placed a piece of soft foam between the seat tube and the back of the controller, to prevent metal against metal. To fasten the controller I used two thick zip ties (which Bolton actually recommends). Area 13 also provides on its website "recommended settings" you make on the new display (included in the box). Bonus Tip: Area 13 (at that time "Bolton e-bikes") has KZbin how-to install videos for the Rad Rover controller upgrade, and separately for his battery upgrade. In the controller upgrade video he provides the settings there too. end

1) great review 2) I like that extra segment from installation. Those issues are VERY important. 3) When you showed the controller I was thinking to myself, that doesn't look waterproof, how can I make it almost waterproof but also way to keep it cool? 4) RESPECT for not promoting the companies and not providing links. This is perhaps first review I have watched that I truly feel it's an uncompromised objective review. 4) I STRONGLY suggest getting a graphic designer to make you: logo (one 2D, one 3D) with transparent background in .png format; same but animated short clips to use as as intro and outro. OR if you don't want to spend money on that you can find FREE generic templates online where you can choose all sorts of styles and change text to your channel name. If you didn’t do it I was going to when I get mine. Bolton should swing you something for this vid because it sold me on the upgrade. I am climbing some gnarly hills in Northern Arizona with my Rover and think this will help immensely. Anway, a buddy and I been trouble shooting mounting options and he said Bolton’s demonstration vid was asking to snap drill bits which is what happened to you, and like you said, I’m not buying the damn nutsert tool because this will be it’s only use. I thought of the self tappers but my friend thinks we just drill a hole through the entire tube and put a bolt through the hole thing... any way great vid!!!! Thanks again 👍💪

For mounting brackets, I'd look to suppliers of high end wifi gear, or security camera. Both make extensive use of pole mounts and have a variety of brackets. Generally speaking I would never drill into a frame tube unless I had no choice. Maybe the Rad frames are heavy enough to withstand drilling holes, but I wouldn't do it. I'm kind of surprised that the Rad frames don't already have braze-ons for exactly that purpose. You can get a frame shop to add braze-ons for $50-60 per pair. But if you don't want to go that route, just check the type of sources I mentioned. Or just Google "pole mount bracket."

I used your video and bought all the supplies to replicate mounting a 35a controller on a Radrover. It worked perfectly, UNTIL I went to raise my seat a week later. It would not move. Turns out the screw from the top mount controller flange went through BOTH the stem post AND the seat post. This locked the seat post in place! To solve the problem, I removed the screw and the seat post came free. The velcro and zip ties hold it pretty tight, so will probably just go with those. The only way I can imagine screwing the top mount to the stem post is if you hacksaw your seat post much shorter. Am I missing something? I also found it impossible to get the screw past the wires at the bottom of the controller. Even if I got it in the hole, with all those stiff wires in the way, how in the world could you get a wrench in their to turn the hex head of the screw? I am not complaining, as without you video I probably would not have been brae enough to try this upgrade - and I love the extra torque. Upgrading battery and motor are next on the plate. Any hints from things learned since making your video? THANKS, Micahel
@CitizenCycle9254 жыл бұрын
funny you should mention the seat post issue. Took me a week or two but i also noticed that my seat was immobilized due to that screw. i dont really adjust my seat height often so i ended up just leaving it locked in place (at least no one can steal my seat hahaha) i think you are right, only way to leave that screw in place would be to hack off the seat post. the velcro an zip ties are probably adequate to hold it though. for the bottom bolt, i did manage to get a small socket wrench on it and turn it. i had the rear tire fully deflated for room to work. they do sell controller mounting boxes on amazon that might be another option for mounting it. best of luck with the upgrades!!!!

I convinced my wife that I needed the Radrover to rehab my new artificial knee 3 years ago. I just put the 35 amp controller upgrade on my 2017 that now has well over thousand miles on it. I mostly use it for 18 mi round trip grocery hauler. My bike feels rite spritely now vs this works fine. Its like the difference between a standard 4 cylinder Subaru and the sleeper 3.6R 6 cylinder-more stuff happens when you twist the throttle. I'm just about ready for my 1st new set of brake pads but now have a legit reason to drop the $ for plug and play hydraulic brakes and new tires. I live in a bunch of hills in Maine and regularly do 30+ mi on original battery. Just got a second battery cuz the bars aren't open now where I could charge up the battery while grabbing bbq or pizza or tacos or burgers or lobster or you get the idea..... No more battery anxiety-especially with 35 amps. I'm not babying it and figure if the motor burns up I'll pick up the drop in Bolton 1kw motor and move along. Its great there is someone like Kyle designing plug and play upgrades for an already capable bike you can get at a reasonable buy in and upgrade as you like. I'd definitely buy a Rad again- actually did just get step thru Radrover for my rather petite (at least in Maine) wife and she loves it. I like my 2017 fine but 2020 has fenders I pd $160 (they are retro stylish tho) for and a usable front and rear lite. It appears to be even better built and have a bit better finish as well when they are side by side. Bolton also has bikes equipped the way I want my next new bike including the upgrades at good prices- especially when u look at the quality components he uses.

You CAN keep your accumulated mileage (but requires some technical expertise & additional equipment/software). If you get another display (exact model), you can transfer ALL of the data & settings from the old one to the new one via the menus. It’s basically a master/slave setup. And, there are other functions that you didn’t bring up... like the cruise function (that I saw someone else mention), the motor temp function (for higher end motors), and some other deeply technical settings that most will never do. I can tell you that after the upgrade, I burned through a brand new set of tires in about half the miles of the old controller. If you install the new controller & leave the settings at factory default, you will like only get 100 miles out of new tires (if you’re lucky). Factory default settings is like a motorcycle! You will do wheelies & maybe leave a little scratch mark on the pavement! Enjoy everyone! Sir ~Jazz~

Regardless of improvements. The bike is no longer street legal as an e-bike. It increases the amps...when multiplied by the volts you exceed 750 watts. They are designed to run at 15 amps x 48 volts = 750 watts. In Canada it's even worse...10 amps x 48 volts = 500 watts.
