What marvelous advice! I've been a US high school teacher for 43 years - music and theatre - and had many students go on to university for acting - some successful - some not so much. But Joel's line, "There is no excuse anymore for doing nothing!" is so wise - and so true! Thank you - I'll bring this with me to school tomorrow.

After seeing so many of your videos, I loved hearing you talk seriously about your personal lives. RADA is known by anyone around the world with a serious interest in film and theatre and your account of process of becoming were very honest and direct. We don’t see your acting on these videos but it’s very apparent that you’re both very talented people.

I am auditioning for RADA in a month and I’ve been binging on your channel for the past week. Really can’t believe you went there, I didn’t know that when I first subscribed. I just wanted to say that. I don’t know if you’ll read this comment but your videos are helping me a lot. KZbin is great for people who want to create their own work (which a lot of people have to do to get noticed). Creativity is key and however you get to create, do it! Finishing things-even crappy things-is a good boost as well. It doesn't have to be good (and initially it probably won't be lol), but at least it'll be finished. :P You guys are fantastic!

I subscribed to your channel because you two have such a wonderful dynamic. Honestly, you could do a video about peanut butter and jam and it would still be entertaining. With regard to this subject I would ask what genre would be your dream job? What kind of character would you play?

Hi there, great video, this has helped a lot as I am currently waiting to do my preliminary audition at RADA! I was just curious as to what contemporary pieces you guys chose and how much they contrasted your classical pieces? I am uncertain as to how contrasting the two pieces have to be and am starting to panic haha thanks!

two months later they are at 89 thousand. all creative output falls under the pareto principle or the 80/20 rule. Basically weath or in this case subscribers are distributed unevenly with the bottom 80 percent of the input (content creators) getting about 20 percent of the output (views) and the top 20 percent getting 80 percent of the views, then within that cohort the top 20 (of the top 20 percent) percent gets 80 percent (of the 80 percent), and within that cohort the top 20 percent gets 80 percent etc and so that most creative types earn zero but as you level up your income grows exponentially.

Auditioning this year for drama schools for the first time. 3 recalls and an offer so far. Didn’t bother with Rada as the audition requirements were ridiculous. Loved the video.

Thanks a lot for considering this topic! But could you please be more detailed about voice and accent requirements? It's interesting because here in Russia if you don't have a perfect accent (basically we have the only one correct accent) and good voice skills, then it's totally not your advantage. And you have dozens of accents..So, how to be? everyone is required for the RP? or...? xx

awesome!! you two did theater/drama? i love theater/drama/musicales. I actually did a few musicales while i was in high school (i hear Brits call it secondary school) my first was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the 197 something version with Gene Wilder. I was an Ommpa-Loompa and i had to wear a green wig. For my first one, i had no idea what i was doing. i didn't know how to act. so during my first stage debut as Ommpa-Loopa, being the first one seen by the kids. at the end of the scene instead of running off being scared, i just casually walked off the stage. being my first one, i had no idea what i was doing. The next one, i believe was Charlie Brown and i played the character of Shermy. and i think my last my senior year was Oklahoma. i did audition for the part of Ado Annie, but didn't get the part. And in the spring, we had our spring plays, but i worked crew for the spring plays (set crew, props manager, costume manager, stage manager) but i don't remember them in the exact order. But i loved it. i don't see myself doing it for a living, getting paid to do it. i think for one musical i did after high school, it was a community musical and i was paid. if i could be in one of our high school musicales, i would. love it too much. I know what you mean about those not wanting to be serious about, wanting to do it for a joke and be lazy. we had one who would complain about everything. at one point, he tired to come into the girls dressing room to get his costume and yes, we girls were all still getting ready. but i grabbed his costume off the rack and handed it to him through the dressing room door. and one wouldn't memorize his lines. he cared more about screwing around than memorizing his lines. and i will tell ya, our director wasn't fond when you were messing around during rehearsals. she would be on ya faster than......simply put - she would be pretty ticked if you were messing around. but we definitely had some funny moments. at one rehearsal of Charlie Brown, one of the actors blew into the pitch finder and no sound came out. during lunch, a lot of us met in the band room to go over things and the music director was like "i gonna get the pitch finder" and for a while minute i thought he said pitch fight. i sat there like what did he says, but i didn't say it out loud. i just shook my head and stuffed my mouth with food. Good times, but god i miss it. But photos got pretty annoying pretty quick. after each show, whether it was a musicale or spring play, after a while (and it was our fault we started this) we started this 10.9.8.7.6.5.4.3.2.1 countdown and scattered off the stage after photos. the music director stopped us during Oklahoma and made us stop. so he finally caught on lol. so many memories.

I felt this way when I was accepted to Indiana University! Top music school, but oh my goodness the nerves and pressure. Eventually I changed my major from musical theater to music/theater education. Less pressure and I could still completely love my arts.

Hi guys, I found this really helpful as I'm hoping to study at drama school in the next couple of years. One other thing I'm curious to hear your thoughts on is about actors working acting jobs whilst studying at drama school (both during term-time and during the holidays). Is it possible? Are you allowed to do that? Do they encourage it? Did either of you work other acting jobs whilst you were training? Or did anyone else in your year? There's not a lot of information to find on that. I know Gemma Arterton worked on St Trinians & a play at the Globe theatre whilst she was still training; I was just curious if it's common practice and how Rada as a school feel about it? Thanks

When I was the University of Regina, actor Barry Morse was brought in by the Drama faculty to talk to us students. One of the things our invited guest said was that drama school is a complete waste of time and money. "If you want to be an actor, for god's sake just go and act," he said. The faculty were not pleased, but I got a subversive chuckle out of it.

I occasionally watch your videos for some time now but never realized the two of you were RADA graduates. I dream of going to RADA since I was a teenager but nice do I have a clue how to und it nor am I a native speaker so I don't know if I had any chance at all. How about the Masters course? How difficult is it to get into this course compared to the competition for the BA course? You chose RADA, but had you offers to the other places? If so, (which ones?) Sorry--Lots of questions--I'm just fascinated.

Well there you go! haha! It depends, if you can get a student loan (not sure how it works with international students) then that's problem solved, if not, there's no easy way through really. RADA don't have any accommodation. Lia lived with family friends and I lived in expensive private halls of residence. But definitely use the resources each school gives you - they often have loads of information on their website regarding funding and accommodation!

I'm 21 and currently have until the 4th of February to film my audition. I know I definitely want to do Beatrice from Much Ado. I need 1 more classical and then one contemporary speech...and need to sing a song as well omg 🤣 Very nervous.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the vid, loved it and found it so reassuring and helpful! I’ve been offered a recall at RADA (got the email about 6 weeks ago) but have not heard about my date yet, so just wondered if you guys would recommend me calling and checking I haven’t missed anything from them, or to just wait as this is a pretty normal timeframe for them? I’ve never got to the recall stage before so not sure about best course of action. Thanks so much and all the best!

Ah congrats! You can always call to check, but it should be fine. Sometimes they take a while to get back with dates. My friend had the same issue last year - she panicked that she'd missed her recall, but they were just super slow. She ended up getting to the 4th round, so don't worry! But they will never be mad at you for calling and checking.

Hey, I know I'm a bit late to to respond to the video, but thanks for the tips. I have a couple of questions though. 1. Is accent softening/reduction a must for aspiring RADA students who are from a non-English speaking country? I'm considering an accent reduction course before my audition. 2. Are there any RADA students who are not from an English-speaking country? Only a few (if any)?

I want to apply to rada next year in September, do they do dance as well in their BA acting course, if so what dance do they do. I looked in their website and they don’t say much about dance? Thank you guys I would really appreciate an answer:) xx

Hopefully you'll see my question: Are you allowed to audition for theatre/television/films while at RADA? Or are you not supposed to audition until after graduation?

Do you, or anyone can give me a hint. I would like to study at Guildhall but my concerns are - how will I make a living, how can an expat manage studying acting (which requires a lot of time, energy and focus) with a job (by making enough to make a living). Is it possible, is does someone has such an experience?

I know they have an open door policy when it comes to auditions but how likely as a disabled or overweight person to actually get in? Are there any students that exist in those realms?

Crazy isn't it! "literally" is used as slang nowadays to emphasise a point. Or instead of the word 'just'. So for example if I was telling Lia about how I nearly got hit by a car, I might say "I was literally walking down the street ....". Instead of "I was just walking down the street..."
