Radial Engineering - Reamping: Exploring the Differences

For folks who don't understand, these units are meant to take a line level signal and convert it to an instrument level signal. It's not a preamp, nor is it a DI. Common use case: you recorded your guitarist playing through an amp, and now you don't like the sound and he's long gone. Luckily, you took a DI of his performance, so you have a "raw" recording. Great! You can send this DI'd performance to the line out if your interface and connect it to the DI box, which will convert the signal to instrument level. Then, you can run the signal into a different amplifier with the desired tone. Stick a mic on the amp, record the new signal, and voila! you've got a new guitar tone. You can also use this little device to, say, run a pre-recorded vocal performance thru a distortion pedal (i.e. use guitar pedals as "outboard gear" in your mix chain). Really, any time you need to use a device that expects instrument level input, this device will be your best friend. Hope this helps!

I'm a bit confused as to why the sound out of the reampbox is not the same as the DI. I know it has to have some little differences because it passes through circuitery but isn't the point of reamp boxes only to transform line level to instrument level so you can reamp just the way the instrument would sound through the amp ? I'm looking for a reamp box that is as transparent as it can get yet those models seem to loose some fidelity of the original sound. Can you brighten me up on this one please ?

My understaning is that the DI sound you're hearing here is dry - it has never been amplified. All the "reamp" tracks here are recordings of the amps.

I have the old kit that includes the J48 and the blue X-amp active I just picked up the JCR and notice the passive tone to be my preference. Is the yellow X-Amp shown here the same as my Blue X-amp from years ago?

@@gitarman666 There are no internal differences between the yellow and blue versions of the X-Amp. We simply changed the outside color to differentiate it from the J48 direct box.

So it's a preamp? How do I use this in a live situation; I pla a Les Paul into a Marshall half stack with a few stomp pedals. Or what about recording at home? How would this benefit me? Genuinely curious. I use a Focusrite 18i20 interface at home with Reaper and various guitar amp plug ins like Neural, Guitar Rig, Bas FX etc when recording tracks. Just trying to get some insight as to if/when I'd need this.
