Radical Face

Күн бұрын

So I gathered family and friends again to make another video. My friend Brian Guiry was kind enough to let us dismantle his house for a second time to shoot the bulk of it, and the outdoor shots were filmed at the end of some trails here in Jacksonville. We only had a week to do everything, including the costumes and set design. I owe a lot of people after all the favors I pulled in for this one. It was a lot of sleepless nights in a row. Thanks again, all you who helped.

This song follows Stone, later in life, living alone and just working to pass the time. When Stone saw his brother Severus die (which was only possible because of the link they shared as twins), Severus was interrupted in his passing on to the next world. He has since lived on in Stone's head as a second voice. Stone, thirty years later, still suffers from survivor's guilt. He feels that Severus should have carried on, that life was wasted on him. This obsession keeps Severus trapped in his head and unable to move on.
Video Explanation: Severus can no longer reach Stone while he is awake. Stone's guilt is a wall that Severus can no longer move past. The video follows Stone as he sleepwalks through the house, led by ghost-like figures that are the embodiment of the memories that haunt him. Severus uses Stone's sleepwalking body to collect any reminders of Severus still within their old house -- especially the pocket knife and the diary. The black liquid that he cuts from his hand represents his guilt, and the video ends with Stone burying all these things under their family tree, which is covered in photos and trinkets of all their relatives.

Holy Branches
When you were young
you'd bite your tongue
calm, always did what you were told
never ran your mouth
lived life on tiptoes
only felt peace if by yourself
where mistakes don't count
there's a hole in your chest
from the time that you was born
one that don't get filled
Cause you've always known
you're nothing they want
but everybody's bones are just holy branches
cast from trees to cut patterns in the world
and in time we find some shelter,
spill our leaves, and then sleep in the earth
and when there we'll belong
'cause the earth don't give a damn if you're lost
and now I live alone
work in the belly of machines
wring my soot black hands
and I don't sleep much
days don't feel different from the nights
with no goals in mind
there's a hole in my chest
from the time the time I walked away
one I fill with sweat
'cause now I know
I'm nothing they want
but everybody's bones are just holy branches
we ride the breeze to cut patterns in the earth
and in time we find some shelter,
spill our seeds and then wait for our turn
but for now we're adrift on the winds of discontent
trying to carve our place
all in hopes we'll be something they want
but I ain't holding my breath
trace your fingers down my spine
make your home behind my eyes
line my skull with harmless lies
I'll bide my time until I'm something they want

More than 8 years ago, Ben Cooper AKA Radical Face, started crafting the story of a fictitious, and sometimes otherworldly, 19th century family. In 2011, he brought those characters to life in The Family Tree: The Roots, which was the first installment of a three-part, stand-alone album series based around the Family Tree he created. He recorded alone in the shed behind his mom's house in Jacksonville, Florida.
Radical Face will release the second installment to the series, The Family Tree: The Branches on October 22. Certain instrumentations and melodies that represent a "family member" will reappear in the second album as a continuation of the story or descendent. Just as The Family Tree: The Roots was limited to instruments that would have been accessible during that era of the story, The Family Tree: The Branches will progress in production by including instruments that would have become available in the next era of the story set from 1860-1910.

Those lyrics are so meaningful to me. I have generalized anxiety disorder and when he sings "All in hopes we'll be something they want but I ain't holding my breath" I can relate so much because people can't understand why it's so hard for me to get basic everyday stuff done and in time I realized my breath was short because of anxiousness but now I ain't holding my breath anymore.

Great song and the best video you guys have done to date. The mask people are lo-fi, low budget but still creepy and haunting. Well done. In the past month since first hearing "The Mute" in a Wilco channel on Pandora I've listened to every song, and purchased The Roots, The branches and Ghost albums on itunes. Can't get enough. Lots of songs remind me of a unique mixture of folksy-wilco and deathcab but with more personal lyrics. Keep it up, man. The world needs more real music.

I'm not sure if they're supposed to be the same people. I think in this video he is supposed to be Stone, and his brother Severus has died. According to this family tree of the Northcotes drawn up by one of the fans, the brother and sister from Family Portrait both had children, the sister's children were a girl called Abigail (the girl from The Dead Waltz), Severus, and Stone, and the brother's children were Vergil, Robert and Judah. Robert is the narrator of Always Gold, and I'm assuming Judah is the other guy in that video, seeing as he's the guy in Ghost Towns and the lyrics from that kinda fit in with the brother who comes home in Always Gold. s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_luook8bOi91r0933ro1_1280.jpg.
