Radio 1 used to go off air between 2am and 5am, and when they came back on air at 5am they used to play 5 minutes of jingles. Sadly, I got up early one morning to record them.

Absolutely! 1989 was a good year for Radio 1, as they switched on half the country to FM.

Back when Radio 1 was good. No wonder Radio 2 is the most listened to station in the UK now - Radio 1 caters to the 8 - 14 year old 'sunny delight' generation.

@firefighterno1 I remember seeing the whole story of how Mattew Bannister wreaked Radio 1 on documentry "trouble at the top" it was very enlightening.

When they desperately needed full transmission on FM almost from launch, they had to timeshare it with Radio 2 - imagine having orchestral or country music, followed by John Peel or The Friday Rock Show, or Sing Something Simple followed by the top 40 - a bizarre juxtaposition of music - but that’s what you get for allowing two stations with completely contradictory music tastes to share a frequency - luckily, both stations are now separate from each other - you don’t find them switching over to each other - should have been like that from the get-go - playing stereo music on a mono station! Ridiculous! Even BBC local radio stations couldn’t manage that - they were available on FM - but, for some strange reason, only in mono! Radio 1 eventually got full FM carriage nationwide - then it all went downhill from there! You could say that it slid down the Bannister!

Wish the BBC would release these as a CD for people to buy, they'd make a fortune

There was an extended piece of music they used to play right around the time Radio 1 started broadcasting on FM. I can't remember if it was played while they were testing frequencies. Also, there was a stunningly good news theme from that era (89-91?), would love to hear that again!

@mickydireland You're right. FM was only switched on for Radio 1 in my part of the world in December 1989. I think this recording must've therefore been the very next day (very sad, I know), because Radio 1 changed all their jingles and image to "1FM" early in 1990.

January 8th, 1990 to be precise with the jingles and image changing.

@madmooman100 You know they do. Showing my age? I suppose at 38 I am past it, but then again when I had my youth at least the world was a better place than it is now. :)

The version I have has Roger Scott's name where Tim Smith's name is. Must've been done after he died.
@stephenemmett97534 жыл бұрын
Correct. Roger Scott had just died, so this is an alternate version of the startup jingle montage containing Tim Smith's name (who did the early show on the day that this was recorded). I think this was the last day to contain this jingle package.

This is the year that the great music died, 31 December 1989. RIP to the good old days of music. 1 January 1960 - 31 December 1989. Tragically murdered by the crap that came in the 90's and now !
@robalexander80654 жыл бұрын
Yeah there was no good music before 1960 and there has been nothing of any merit in the last thirty years. (Cough) Horseshit!!
