Hurricane Homestead

Күн бұрын

A friend of mine told me about a Ham Radio Antenna Tower that we could have if we removed it from their house and took it away. We managed to complete the HAM radio antenna tower removal and dismantle in three hours, and this will make a nice addition to the homestead.
Follow along as we explore and learn to build a homestead in middle Tennessee. In 2016 we packed up our three kids and decided to leave suburban life in order to rediscover our love of outdoors, and learn the necessary skills to build a homestead from scratch. Learn with us as we begin to grow a garden, raise chickens, hunt and forage for food and live life to its fullest.

Don't try this at home folks, because you can't be assured of the divine intervention which was at work here. Being supported at a single, too low point, almost certainly the tower should have buckled at about 50 degrees above horizontal. The safe way to do this is with a safety belt, gin pole, tower jack and knowledge and experience in their use, which makes a used tower a much less attractive bargain unless you're part of a ham radio group where you may be able to borrow these tools and learn their safe use.

I’ve taken a lot of towers from Leamington to Kingston, Ontario. I usually climb the tower and take the antenna and lower it. Then section by section with a gin pole. Some jobs no room to remove like in the video. I don’t know how this was possible attaching a rope at a low angle because of the weight from antenna down. The base surely would have lifted unless chained down. What I see is a Unsafe method .

Darn near exactly what I have to do to remove my tower. Wish I could have seen a better view of how you attached the different pulleys for mechanical advantage. But you did verify that the house structure is strong enuff to handle the tower weight coming down.

Taking that down without the hinge would have been a little too exciting. Now you get to have some fun fabricating the base part of the hinge at your location.

I was holding my breath the whole time praying that the hinge didn’t let go.

Why not climb it take antenna off and use a ginpole to remove tower sections.

Because it worked so well doing it this way. And it was hard enough trying to take it apart on the ground, I couldn't imagine doing this 30ft up in the air.

How did you attach rope and pulley to house? Did you reinforce the facia?
@HurricaneHomestead
@HurricaneHomestead Жыл бұрын
We used the bracket that the tower was attached by. It was reinforced with threaded rod that was anchored inside the attic.

I came here hoping to learn how to bring down section by section because I don’t have the luxury of lower in one piece because there’s no room for it plus the base is anchored differently. Good job though.

When I showed up to get it I had no idea what I was getting into, I just lucked out with it being so easy. Thanks for watching though!

Are the pieces to long to fit in a minivan?

You could make it work. Each section was about 10 ft, and the longest antenna was about 12 ft.
