I wonder if the Haniers are ready for a spot of TISM? Maybe "He'll Never Be AN Ol' Man River" or "Greg ,The Stop Sign"? And for the video alone, "Thunderbirds Are Coming Out"...what a snapshot of an era.

Believe it or not, but the singer, Rob Younger, was the leadsinger of the Sunnyboys a little while after his time with Birdman. Jeremy Oxley asked if he could take over vocals as he felt he better represented youth. Old man Rob agreed and moved on to other great things. Sunnyboys also moved on to record great surf-powerpop classics. I was with a group of punks in Melbourne that loved Birdman, but that wasn't a too common thing in the Melbourne scene. A few were dubious about Radio Birdman. They were a Sydney band that mostly worked in the suburbs and were at odds with us Melbourne wimps that learned towards arty-farty punk like Boys Next Door and maybe, La Femme. Kinda laughable now because Radio Birdman was mostly made up of medical students, while La Femme were made up of ex-Sharpies (google them if you need clarity). This stuff still holds up to this day. I recommend check out Radio Birdman - Live at the Marryatville Hotels (1977). If a 14 minute gig film is too much, then just go for What Gives or New Race nzoz1977 Yeehup!

You folks are really travelling down some arcane streets of Australiana - I always loved this song and I think the performance was filmed live at the Paddington Town Hall, a famous music venue in olden time in Sydney - chops to you two :)

When you put Australians , together with a super cool dude , from a Klondike, and a guy sniffing the fumes of a motor city you get the coolest music ever.

Hawaii 5 0 was one of my favourite shows when I was a kid. This was great and made me laugh because in my first band, we wrote a song called Bloodlust, and the guitarist could think of a suitable solo, so he played a speeded up version of the theme tune.

Excellent early days of Punk song. For some reason many who surfed 🏄♂️ got into punk in the early days. Free spirited individuals.

The Radio Birdman were a wild band in the 70s and 80s. They do a great version of the Doors LA Woman which was broadcast live on 2JJ in 1976.

Good review! Not Birdman's best song, but funny anyway. Their best songs include 'New race' (the brilliant studio 2:44 version), 'Hand of law', their fabulous cover of Roky Ericson's 'You're gonna miss me', 'Do the Pop', 'Love kills', 'I94', 'Breaks my heart', 'Hangin on' ... 'Crying sun' ... This band was/is the equal of the Stooges but almost completely unrecognised.

My husband loves this band. He and my older brother used to see them play back in the 70's. Radio Birdman and The Saints were never my thing. Split Enz's ''I See Red'' and Plastic Bertrand's ''Ça plane pour moi'' is the only punk accepted in my world. lol

One thing I forgot to mention. I worked with the guy that made this video. He made it in 1988 as a promo-clip for some Radio Birdman comp that was being released that year. He told me that Birdman/management gave him a whole lot of footage and photos for him to play with and this is what he came up with. I wasn't working with him in the film business. I was working with him in retail. I think he might have also edited some INXS videos in his past. Anyway, just thought I'd share that.

Like The Saints, Radio Birdman are not punk. They play hard and fast rock. They're one of the greatest bands ever. Their first three albums are a must. Deniz Tek the lead guitarist was born in Ann Arbor Michigan and ended up finishing his medical degree in Sydney where he met Rob Younger and they formed the band. He is a dual citizen and when he did his National Service in the US Navy he was a flight surgeon and flew combat jets and whose call sign was ''Iceman'' and is heavily rumoured to be the role model for the character in the original Top Gun movie. This guy is a genius on too many fronts.

Often categorised as ‘punk’. Birdman actually arose prior to that at Sydney venues in 1974. Their seminal album Radios Appear released in 1976. Describing their sound as high energy rock and roll, guitarists Denis Tek and Chris Masuak were Detroit natives, which probably explains the band’s obvious Stooges & MC5 influences?

Add these to the list for future Radio Birdman inspection: *Radio Birdman - New Race nzoz1977* *Radio Birdman DESCENT INTO THE MAELSTROM Deniz Tek* I would request the TV performance of TV Eye and Kick Out The Jams, but it might get blocked by the Birdmen. Those three suggestions are great! DogsInSpace has been dropping this request, and I thought I'd help him promote it. The Reels - Misused Abused (visual + audio merge 2023)
