Radio Caroline AM 648 (Reception in Germany)

Radio Caroline (London) on 648 kc - received in January 2022 in Germany with common car stereo. Authentic sound like back then when best music was available on AM.

FYI Mate Radio Caroline is BBC Radio 1 from Orfordness South East England in Sussex. Their using the original arial of the BBC a reflected di-pole antenna.

Thanks a lot - yes I know, they're broadcasting from Brookman's Park with 150 KW, right? I used to listen to the Beebe on 648 back then over here. You're so lucky to still have AM radio in Britain. Over here it's deadly quiet...

Caroline 648 kHz is from Orfordness but that is in Suffolk (not Sussex). That site used to house the BBC World Service to Europe (not Radio 1). Caroline rents use of the site from an independent company (Cobra Mist Ltd.). Currently, transmitted power is 4kW ERP, from an omnidirectional "reserve" antenna (not the directional array or any individual elements of it). Caroline has never broadcast from Brookmans Park. 150 kW we can only dream of! OTOH back in the 1980s offshore days of Radio Caroline on 963 kHz, the then BBC Brookmans Park transmitters were ("accidentally"?) mis-aligned so as to cause their own spurious interference signals ("grey jamming"?) on 963 kHz. One could clearly hear these while driving north of London, matching the audio from one or two BBC stations, that combined together in a way that generated them. Poor show! (and not the first time it proved to be the BBC, as opposed to "pirates", that caused radio interference). Much later (2000's?) Radio Caroline did briefly broadcast at 600 kW over the mentioned BBC World Service transmitter, by that time run by a private company, Merlin (not the BBC), in order to test that transmitter. If they had used the site's directional antenna (I can't recall) then the power towards Europe would have been the equivalent of 2 Megawatts. That transmitter is no longer present (probably no longer exists - and at least one of its big power output valves is now literally a museum exhibit). BTW: I'm one of Radio Caroline's BTS "elves", (not a transmitter engineer, but I know the main one) and I am in any case a radio tech enthusiast and of course a Radio Caroline enthusiast.

You're lucky! I know that, too, from our vacations in Zeeland plus visits in Brugge, where I could pull in Radio Caroline even down in the "Pandreitje" underground parking lot.
