To those who don't know what it's about, to sum it up: Thom wasn't ready to be playing di many shows, especially big ones. He would have really bad anxiety about it all before asking the lead singer from REM how he deals with it. He said to act like you aren't even there, "I'm not here, this isn't happening" Mightve left something out but yeah

Hmm... I can relate to this song. At times I go on through the day normally yet when I get home I realise I wasn't really... me. I wasn't there. Or whenever I go for holidays I forgot me and almost watch myself. I can't really explain. And now, I'm not sure whether the me who is watching or the me who is acting is me, so perhaps I have disappeared...

Artists who write lyrics own the words. And they own the intent. But people who listen to them and allow them to resonate own the meaning. Even if it isn't what the artist intended. Music is nothing if someone doesn't hear it and relate on some level. There are many ways to see and hear this song and all of them are right. Because it cuts into the soul. As beautiful as it gets.
