Wasn't aware this song existed, until I stumbled upon it in an episode of Ozark. Love how sinister the piano sounds.

By this point you are no doubt aware of the revered Basement sessions. In Rainbows performance gets the most love and hype and it should it is one of the greatest live performances in existence. But the next album King of Limbs Basement session is also amazing, both on its own right but also because it is kind of universally considered as better than the studio album significantly. I agree. Also it includes 2 tracks, The Daily Mail in partcular bt also "Staircase" that are as good or better than the 8 tracks on the TKOL album. They put out The Daily Mail and Staircase as a single (too bad not on the album as it would sit in much higher regard than it holds now). But more or less they are King of Limbs songs. However the single release and song you just lstened to are the live performances from the Basement for TKOL album. Just fun fact. That was live. Check out this performance if you never have - for reactions and for personal enjoyment. "Staircase" is a fantastic song as well.

I absolutely adore the album version of 'the numbers' from a moon shaped pool. Fun fact, the daily mail was recorded as part of the basement sessions. The band loved that version so much that it became the official version you've just listened to. Honestly, watch those videos, daily mail is from the king of limbs session

Totally agree about how everything else stops when you listen to Radiohead, I'm always immersed, to the point I just wanna stay there. The house could be on fire, I'll be like yeah it can wait. This isn't even on any album!

I've never heard this one before either. Amazing! Given what you were saying when you were reacting to this song, this could have been written very recently. Thanks Greg, and keep one ear to your son's door. If you want to dig up another deep cut from Radiohead, try "I Promise". This one is so soothing and sublime and the video is a bit unnerving.

If you know British media you’ll understand from the title alone exactly the kind of things Thom is railing against with his lyrics in this song!! 🥰

Just one of a huge number of sublime Radiohead tracks that completely transports you. I love the fact you never entirely know where the song is going next, how it will develop. I always assumed this was a scathing attack on the tabloid press in the UK as the Daily Mail is a part of Rupert Murdoch's mega-media empire, and maybe it is but the lyrics are so abstracted I have no clue......!

Correction - finally released many years later but it's amazing that a song this great could just 'sit in the can'. Most bands would give their right arm for something this good

The Daily Mail is the UK's most popular newspaper overtaking Murdochs The Sun. The Daily Mail like many of the newspapers these days has lost a lot of readers over the years as circulation declines. The Daily Mail has flirted with fascism and has a less than proud history, one of its most famous headlines was 'Hurrah the Blackshirts' written by it's owner at the time Viscount Rothermere back in the 30's and he was also pals with Hitler. Todays Lord Rothermere 4th runs stories of patriotism and anti-woke and just like any good patriot he lives in France for tax reasons. The Daily Mail is a fantastic propaganda tool for the right-wing, and this is why this failing industry is still propped up. It's a shame these off-shore media barons still hold so much power in the 21st century.
