Tbh, the themes of comfort at the beginning and end, the sense of security, warmth, and reassurance, dont really fit in with OK Computer. The paranoia, alienation filled tracks from paranoid android to no surprises has a very heavy anxious mood. Still, very deserving of a Single though.

Background of this song that I’m sure most are aware of but I’ll say it anyway: This song was originally written for The Bends. They performed it live a couple of times in 1996. They tried to develop it more to put it on OK Computer, but they thought the commercial potential of the song was too stressful, so they never finished it. The live version and some early studio versions are much more explosive and loud, and were a fan favorite for unreleased/bootlegged songs. In 2017, for the 20th anniversary of OK Computer, they released a finished version of the song. Along with a music video of Thom in a lift, visiting different rooms, with cameos from characters from other music videos. Such as the kid from Paranoid Android at 2:52.

I like the idea that Thom here has just accepted the slow drag of life and descended until the eventual end-- where he wouldn't have to be stuck anymore. In the end, we are all on the same lift together. There is an end to the descent. And you don't have to cut the descent short. Accept that your doors will open to strange places and people, and friends will come and press all of the floors. Whether you accept that or not, everyone wants you to stick around for a couple more floors. So stick around. Stick around with all of us and just... "let it go".

For a brief moment, the "01" in the elevator display turns into an "OK", then the doors open and Thom sees someone who looks like himself but isn't. That, I think, is Radiohead's lead singer looking back at the man he used to be when he made OK Computer. He walks toward that person, but he isn't himself anymore - there is only one Thom, and they ain't him. They turn around to face the real one; he stays put, looking back at them. Even though he pressed "01" on the panel, he won't join them because they are not his destination. Rather, he contemplates the OK floor briefly, then moves on (presumably) to the ground floor where he needs to attend to real-life matters - hence the bags.

Interesting things I've noticed so far: There a fake plastic tree on each floor. On 3:33 the 01 floor number flickers briefly and changes to OK. The guy on 2:52 resembles the Paranoid Android character. The fish bowl he's drinking out of is also a reference to the music video. The 10th floor (2:20) kinda reminds me of the High and Dry music video, I could be wrong though. Same goes for the 11th floor. I'll update more speculations when possible. Was there anything else I missed? EDIT: So here's a little update of what other possible references I got based on the replies. There's a shopping cart on 1:03, perhaps another possible reference to Fake Plastic Trees. The bald men in suits on 1:38 could either be a reference to the Just music video. It could also be reference to the lyric "the yuppies networking" from Paranoid Android or the man in the suit from the music video. OR maybe there's a Phil Selway cosplay going on.... The old man on 2:35 highly resembles the guy from the Karma Police music video. At 2:51, perhaps that's a reference to Kid A? Maybe that's too far fetched though... At 2:57, the women kinda resemble the women from Street Spirit. Someone mentioned a possible reference to No Surprises on 3:00, I'm assuming he/she is referring to the lighting? IMO, that seems too obscure. Surely they must be a better reference somewhere... Also, anyone found any explanations to floors on 1:30, 3:11 and 3:26?

I really love this song, because it speaks to a feeling we all have, but can't quite put into words. That feeling when you finally see reality for what it is, after a long time of feeling disconnected from it. It's not necessarily happiness or sadness, its more base than that, and much more simple, but it feels good, better perhaps than any other feeling there is. Sometimes we all get stuck in a lift, and we're unaware of the people trying to reach us outside, desperately trying to connect. Its that moment of clarity, when you come to from all the bullshit, and 'come home' to reality.

I heard this song ages ago (in 1996), like it might even have been in demo form during the bends era, but I've always loved it, and glad they brought it out officially (in 2017s ok computer reissue). Such a beautiful song. It just goes to show that styles may change, but every great song has its own 'soul' to it, that will be appreciated and endure whatever the style

When i was 3 years old i entered a lift by myself at the lobby of a ski resort. When they noticed , My parents began stopping and searching every floor for me in a panic. Apparently some time later i strolled out of a lift into my mothers embrace as if nothing had happened. I was too young to remember any of this. But for as long as i can remember ive felt like a counterfeit in the world. Maybe im Really still on that lift. This is my favorite music video,thanks Radiohead
I'd describe it as delightfully surreal! I love that they've made surreal videos for all three of these finally released gems. Some of us have been waiting literally 20 years to hear these songs outside of poorly recorded live bootlegs. Lo and behold they are fantastic and all get the video treatment!

Just wanted to express my gratitude to Radiohead for finally releasing this song. It meant a lot to me many years ago, but it also means so much to me now at a different time in my life. Also, thanks to Mr. Oscar Hudson and team for making a great video, which I think adds to the song's impact, especially for those of use who are more visually oriented. So much packt into the song and video, but a few special takeaways for me: as a father, I laughed at how kids can throw a wrench in your plans just as you're starting to get moving. Also, not sure if intentional, but I though of the Harry Dean Stanton character from "Paris, Texas" (guy in red hat). I loved that movie, so maybe its just me, but I appreciated his inclusion.

You said it yourself that it wouldn't fit. Everything on OK Computer feels very intentional. It's not even my favourite album by Radiohead and I think it's overrated but this in terms of quality and lyrics and theme just would not fit. It's quite a generic song and sounds like something in between The Bends and OK Computer. It's a little too basic for OK Computer.

It is actually a little older. The older version played live is a lot better IMO and is rumored to be the inspiration for Coldplays yellow.

The young girl and woman in black at the start are Thoms daughter and girlfriend. See how his daughter presses all the buttons on the lift? Could this be representing all the many different stops in life he had to take once he had a child? And see how his girlfriend goes to the overturned plant and rescues it? Thoms original partner Rachel died last year, could this represent how this woman has helped rescue his overturned life? All comments/thoughts welcome guys! :)

@Eorzat7 жыл бұрын
Don't think they really represent anything. His daughter pressing all the buttons is just a dick move that sets up the whole video for why he's in the elevator (lift) for so long. His girlfriend "rescuing" the plant probably doesn't represent anything either - just a reference to Fake Plastic Trees. The whole video is apparently just references to other RH videos, so, if anything, the video is just symbolic of their career in general.
