This is honestly one of the most well-made music videos I’ve ever seen. The whole concept symbolizes something in my view. One of the most obvious points is the drastic difference in tone and cinematography between the “day” and the “night” sequences. From the beginning “night” is established as the anxiety-inducing, paranoid, and lonely atmosphere. This is very masterfully contrasted with the presence of people in the “day” sequence. The man has interactions with the people around him (the woman walking past him, the bike rider dropping a phone). But slowly these two realities start to merge together and the safety margin created by the brightness and normality of the “day” sequence is starting to fade. The man starts acting out “night” actions in the day (looking back for no reason, dodging a nonexistent car). This is exactly the place where you can’t trust any of the realities anymore. All this was to preface my main point: in tandem with the title of the song “Man of War”, I believe the music video visualizes PTSD and paranoia. The “day” sequence is real life and the main character has actually interacted with his surroundings. However, his mind, paranoia, and PTSD has caused an alternate “night” timeline, which slowly starts to converge into reality. At the end, he can’t distinguish what is real or fake anymore (the turning point is when he looks at a picture of himself in the phone…i.e. paranoia has kicked in). The people following him so intently are a part of that fake reality he has created. These people within this world (his mind) try to creep into his life and take control. This is seen initially when we can see a shadow following him in the “day” sequence. Gradually, a whole physical appearance pops up and the people following him increases. I symbolize these people as the trauma and mental scars that the main characters has to carry. No matter what he does, he can never get rid of them. He is scared of them. Terrified. He tries ignoring them and running from them, but they always remain within a constant distance away from him. At the end, he trips over and…nothing happens. The people, his trauma and guilt is part of him, following him but not there to physically hurt him. He can never get rid of them, except to accept their presence and coexist with them. At the end, the man is distraught but calmer. He realizes that he can never escape his mind and these presences attached to him, but just maybe he won’t have to run away from them at all.
@KaosMasterX Жыл бұрын
At 2:09 when the phone was dropped, it had shown a picture of the man sitting on the bench. It's not paranoia, he was definitely being watched and targeted. As for what, idk.

I think the video could also tell a story about PTSD, and not just anxiety as people are saying. A man of war that has flashbacks of the people he's killed whenever the video switches from day to night. The man can't get over the guilt as they chase him, and eventually he can't tell what is real and what is just another nightmare he's having, so he starts seeing them in real life. At the end, the man stops running and realizes that there's nothing he can do about it, so he comes to terms with it, living with the burden.

It's difficult to explain to people what it's like to wait twenty years for something. Some of you reading haven't even been alive that long. But that's how long us hardcore Radiohead fans have waited for Man Of War. This song has been known to Radiohead fans for all this time. We heard it in live performances we were lucky enough to attend, in rare, scratchy, ethereal bootlegs of live shows we couldn't get to. You can see them developing this song in the studio in the film "Meeting People Is Easy." And with every release since OK Computer, all of us have been hoping we'd finally hear a studio version of this song. Well, we have it now, and they absolutely did not disappoint. This was worth waiting twenty years for. And that this song smokes everything else being put out by other artists today? That's just a teensy cherry in an avalanche of cherries on a very big and delicious cake.

The video is basically showing the comparison between how you look on the outside, and how you feel on the inside, day and night. During the day, on the outside, he seems like a pretty nice guy, on the inside, he’s scared, running from something, he’s a fighter, and eventually, his night and day become one. To me it is all reality. I'm an attractive petite woman who looks approachable. When I walk down the streets of my city 😢 approach me in many different ways. It ranges from giving me roses, asking to take a selfie with me (I'm recognized for the unusual volunteer work I do), or they want to flirt. Some turn into stalkers that threaten and assault me. I've become afraid to walk on roads. The last stalker actually followed me to the Police Dept, but took off while the police were helping someone else.

Here's my interpretation of the vid. It started with a seesaw of somewhat normal moods during daytime and spurts of anxiety at night. Later, it didn't matter whether it was night or day. His anxiety (the guys chasing him) grew until they eventually caught up with him at the rails (I remember a line from Nude - "You've gone off the rails" but I'll explain the reference later). Since the guys drove him mad, he had to know whether they were really after him or they were merely "there". He came to realize they were never there to specifically cause any REAL harm to him. Notice when he stopped running and started walking, the guys started walking too. Back to the "off the rails" reference, he finally decided to WALK "along the rails" which means he made peace with himself because he learned that his FEAR was irrational and will just make him go "off the rails". By the looks of it, he seemed OK at the end of the vid.
@zeadsi7 жыл бұрын
Could it also be a case where the man is, in fact, dead without realizing it? At some point, it seems like that fever-dream-like state of delirium insinuates a lost perception of time. The further the video progressed, the less aware other people became of his presence, starting around the time the lady's phone fell out her pocket. The only one paying him any attention is the other dead chasing him down. Perhaps the lyrics "drift all you like" and the later "off the rails" reference could be the beginning and end told in reverse order. Again, another indication of time-dilation, not only represented by the time lapse of day and night but also in the lyrical content. He possibly died from some sort of accident, perhaps at the end on the train tracks by an incoming train. The rest of the people chasing him were simply other dead people trying to awaken him to this fact and it wasn't until he "drifted" back to the origin of his death that he calms down and walks along with them. He accepts them and drifts together. Maybe this video is him reliving his last moments in a purgatory-like state?...... or maybe I just overthought the whole thing (the most likely possibility) and the video is just fucking awesome.

I think it could be a symbolic experience of a guy who experiences PTSD in public after coming back from war (Man of War), and the people running are normal looking but his PTSD kicks in and he fears they are after him. It could also be symbolic for someone battling them selves inside their consciousness, until eventually they realize everything is okay.
@MegaWhitechoco7 жыл бұрын
It was a man (at daytime) and turned into what appears to be a mannequin (at nighttime). I took that scene at 2:51 to mean that as his anxiety became severe, he's had trouble telling which is REAL and which is not. In short, he began to lose touch with REALITY.

If anyone else understands, this video is a PERFECT representation of what running away from ego-death feels like, whether it be from psychedelics, meditation, or whatever means you used to achieve it. This is the best music video I've seen in a long time. I love the use of perfectly cut night shots to represent his true state of mind. I love the encroaching shadows, and the musical timing of the first stalkers reveal. And I especially love the way he looked back at the girl. Masterful.

Listen to that production! This sounds like it was recorded yesterday, not 20 years ago! Still completely fresh.

that's because they recorded this song back in 2015, they did it for Spectre, the film, but it was rejected.

+Victor Gomez how was Sam Smith's music chosen over this
@jakedoingmusic7 жыл бұрын
Nope, recorded in 1997. Spectre is the tune they recorded for Spectre!
@halloweenvicg37 жыл бұрын
Everyone's Favourite Jake Apparently they recorded this song first but when the producers heard that this song was from 1997 they rejected it and then they recorded Spectre which was also rejected for the film.

imagina any band that would left this music out of an album, this is how good they are

imo its better than half of the actual album, could’ve replaced electioneering or the tourist

They didn't just leave this off the album, they left it off the B-sides EP they released after the album. To them, this wasn't even good enough to be a B-side. THAT is how good they are.

I’ve seen some replies to a comment saying Radiohead has fallen off a little… they haven’t fallen off, they’re just growing old and it’s hard to do things in general when you’re old. If anything their work is more impressive now than ever because of the longevity of Radioheads determination

Lyrics.. Drift all you like From ocean to ocean Search the whole world But drunken confessions And hijacked affairs Will just make you more alone If you come home I’ll bake you a cake Made of all their eyes I wish you could see me Dressed for the kill A nasty surprise You’re my man-o-war And the worms will come for your Big boots So unplug the phones Stop all the taps It all comes flooding back From poisonous cloud To poisoned dwarf What a nasty surprise You’re my man-o-war And the worms will come for your Big boots Yeah the worms will come for you Big boots

Actual New Lyrics: Drift all you like from ocean to ocean. Search the whole world. But drunken confessions and hijacked affairs will just make you more alone. When you come home, I'll bake you a cake made of all their eyes. I wish you could see me, dressed for the kill. You're my man of war. You're my man of war. Yeah the worms will come for you. Big boots. So unplug the phones. Stop all the taps. It all comes flooding back. Through poison clouds and poison dwarf. You're my man of war. You're my man of war. Yeah the worms will come for you. Big boots. Yeah the worms will come for you. Big boots. For you. Big boots.
