Ave Maria! It was a bit disappointing to see a lack of understanding in Eastern Orthodox theology on a video that is trying to engage with Mariology between Catholics & Orthodoxy. While it is certainly true that the Orthodox have a “high Mariology” like we Catholics do and she is regularly invoked as an intercessor and source of protection, it is important to understand that most Orthodox prayers are very poetic and therefore not always understood/interpreted as technically as we would in Catholic theology. In the Small Paraklesis prayers to Our Lady they even pray “Most holy Theotokos save us” - which we Catholics would definitely see and immediately claim as evidence that they believe in the Coredemtrix, but majority of Orthodox would deny this. Although we can claim the doctrine of the Coredemptrix can be found in Orthodoxy, they would reject this based on 2 main points. 1) they would reject any definition of Dogma because they deny papal infallibility and also consider dogma as an essential part of Orthodoxy that does not need to be defined or declared 2) due to their rejection of western scholastic theology, the Orthodox not only claim to not accept the doctrine of Original Sin as we understand it, they also deny the doctrine of penal substitution even though you can see it and hear it in the Liturgy of St John Chysostom. But they again would claim this is poetic language and that penal substitution is foreign to them and therefore any basis for the Codremtrix they would reject based on it being a “western invention” even though for all intents and purposes their prayers would support understanding Our Lady as Coredemtrix. Hence why they also reject the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception even though they universally believe she was presanctified in the womb of St Anne Also regarding the falling asleep of Our Lady - they absolutely believe she died before being Assumed. It is only certain sections of pious Catholic theology who try to claim that Our Lady did not die, but this is a minority view and not in line with the common doctrine of preschism theology

I appreciate the time that went into teaching Byzantine history. But you miss the mark on what we Greek Orthodox believe and what our ancestors believed. We do not see the Holy Theotokos as co-redeemer. She saves in the sense that she carries our prayers to her son our Lord and God and the Redeemer of mankind. Our Lord’s first miracle shed light on the role of Theotokos in our redemption. At the wedding feast at Cana when the host of the wedding went to Mary because the wine had run out, she did not join Jesus in changing the water into wine. She carried the petition to her son, our Lord, who performed the miracle of changing water into wine. This foreshadowed the role of the Theotokos in our salvation. She is our great intercessor to the redeemer, not our co-redeemer. This is the faith of the Orthodox. I love and prayer for our Catholic brothers but respectfully you should not try to state, and misstate, what we believe.
