Radiology in the Developing World

This talk emphasizes the crucial role of medical imaging in improving health outcomes in low-income countries, and highlights the higher overall burden of disease in low-income countries, showcasing disparities in death rates from various causes such as infectious diseases, trauma, and cancers compared to high-income countries. Essential medical imaging requirements in low-income countries focus on the diagnosis of tuberculosis, lung infections, maternal and infant health, trauma, and breast cancer, with X-ray and ultrasound considered vital modalities. However, challenges in affordability, equipment maintenance, and a shortage of radiologists pose obstacles to access. The discussion explores potential solutions, including training local medical imaging entrepreneurs, utilizing emerging technologies like smartphone-powered ultrasound, and leveraging artificial intelligence for interpretation, indicating a path towards improving medical imaging access in low-income countries.
