Ultrasound Tutorial: Appendix/Appendicitis | Radiology Nation

Learn a technique for ultrasound imaging of the appendix. We will also review the classic ultrasound appearances of appendicitis.
Here are some additional tips courtesy of Andrew Trout, MD:
1. Push harder (need to displace gas)
2. You are not done until you have done a sweep of the deep pelvis to look for fluid, inflammation, collections
3. Change the bladder if you cant find the appendix - if it's full, empty it, if it's empty, let it fill
4. The bladder can be used for counter pressure - if the caecum or appendix are down in the pelvis, pressure on the left side of the bladder with your left hand can lift them out of the pelvis into the RLQ
5. For the retrocecal appendix, creep out to the right flank or position left lat decubitus

I work nights at a hospital, my coworker was looking for my appendix just to practice. I brought up this video while she had my stomach coated in jelly, probe on my belly, and was watching this and unable to find it because appendixes are a bit tricky to find if they aren't acting up. We gave up the video didn't help. Nice video nonetheless.

of course you will not see normal appendix. Of course you will see it if you are really professional. You will see it easily if there is appendicitis there.

It helped me actually, I'm practicing for appendix 😂 it is very tricky i usually call radiologist for suspected appendicitis 😂

Ugggghhh, Appendix ultrasounds are so hard! I can actually see mine really well but mine is very low in the abdomen. Most I have done I have not been able to find unless something is wrong but I do want to learn the right way to even see a normal appendix, this was helpful but the whole bowel thing is tricky, I can make up normal appendix looking areas after looking for a bit!

When it seems u don't understand anything in Rif when searching for inflamed appendix it means sub acute appendicitis or normal appendix

mine was traumatic on an ultrasound . i was told it would be at 10am and i needed a full bladder so i drunk and didn’t go to the bathroom. they kept saying 5 more minutes until 4pm and my ultrasound tech was pushing so hard to try and find my appendix (turns out it no longer existed 😂)
