In a sense, steampunk is evolving as more people are getting involved with said subject. Steampunk to me is alternate victorian science, fantasy & fiction. Dishonored and Theif 2014 video games is a decent example of this, and so does the Syberia series. This is the type of steampunk that I enjoy on the fiction and fantasy side. But not everyone thinks of this. I’ve met people that have talked about the same topics as you. Biggest common things among any Steampunker is many of them make their own creations or fixes old things. Either clothing, clocks, bags, trains; basically, if there’s a chance to fix it, it will be fixed. They study the past and curate it of how it affects the people of today. I find all of it fascinating. Even museums are unknowingly helping this cause. Steampunk is evolving but I believe it’ll continue to have its core roots.

The "baseline" of steampunk , it's very earliest beginnings, were Jules Verne, Steam engine, Victorian England. Perhaps it would be well to make two headings, one "Classic Steampunk" and the other "Progressive Steampunk". The thing that is never mentioned is the MOOD that prevailed in the steam engine era. It was a mood of optimism, hope, the exhuberance that anything is possible with sufficient ingenuity, hard work and talent. There is much in the world at present that robs us of that exhuberance, and those "drag us downs" must be identified and rooted out. I do see a happy mood prevail in the various Steampunk festivals, a short break from the not so happy world. Thank you for sharing thoughts/ideas, Ralph in Ohio. It WILL be a happy moment to see one of those massive steampunk airships loaded up with Victorain era houses, and trailers dangling down, be dragged along by drones. All in sepia /bronze color of course!😍😍😍

Thanks for your reaction. I'm not sure on what topic you speak. The aesthics or the genre? This is what I mean with debating the topic of Steampunk. If you are talking about aesthetics, I am still of the opinion the Sp genre does not have a monopoly on it. Thus you can have Fantasy with Steampunkish aesthetics. Arcanum and Thief are interesting as they flirt with themes of the Steampunk themes. I agree on the topic of evolution. But what I am intrested in is, what is driving this change? I believe that it is mainstream popculture. Example, I'm sure we'll se some steampunk inspired variations of Bleu Eye Samurai pretty soon. My own series The Association of Ishtar's aesthetics and stories, draws inspiration from many things, from German Expressionism to modern Anime. That the wonderfull thing of the Sp genre. What I try to educate future authors/desigers on is the methode to the madness.

Since Steampunk, as generally accepted, is an ALTERNATIVE futuristic Victorian universe, is it not up to the individual to decide HOW that future evolved, as evidenced by their character? Just my thought. Neither Right nor Wrong. 🐺🤙

Well, yes. But I think you are confusing Victorian Futurism with Futurism. Our point is that, as a genre, Steampunk is Alternate History, not future prediction.

I enjoy hearing your ramblings but for me, Steampunk is based on Victorian era industry and fashion and the Victorian dream of the idyllic, exhuberant future of steampower. The sooty faces from coal smoke in team engines and oily, sooting faces from castor oil burned in aviation ages with it's goggles etc. etc. Victorian steampunk fashion and dreaming is intoxicatingly beautiful, all else called steampunk is of little interest to me. Thank you for your reply Ralph. So, regarding your response. There is nothing I disgree with. Its an example of what I mean about the pop-culture image of the Victorian era. Were I differ this that I mostly talk about genre, not just aesthics and costume culture. For my videos, and fiction, I look beyond the bounderies of the costume culture, as that is not the only way Steampunk is being expressed. See, video games, comics, alternate history. These forms of media are not included in descriptions like this, despite this being the place where the large audiance get exposed to the Steampunk aesthetics. I couldn't have created what I have if I stuck to confines of the convention scene. And I wish more creators would do so to breathe some much needed life in the Steampunk concept.

🧡🧡🧡 I loved steampunk even before I knew that there was a name for it. So far as what I actually DO, making artisan walking canes for my customers, tending my 50 feet by 300 feet densely planted vegetable garden and canning/freezing everything out of it, and tending my antique rose bushes/cottage garden plus walking our bulldog uses up my time. I have no time or opportunity to DO steampunk, but I admire what other people do. @@RadioRetrofuture To summarize, I am agrarian, stampunk is mechanical, not enough hours in the day to do EVERYTHING!☺☺

Easier now, winter has come, 98% of vegetables canned and in the dep freeze. I canned 70 quarts of tomatoes from our garden, hundreds of quarts all together. Today I DID roll up the electric shock fence and stached it until next year. @@RadioRetrofuture
