In the cold March of 2022, lines at the borders of Ukraine stretched for dozens of kilometers. By crowded evacuation trains, by cars and simply on foot, people with children in their arms were headed beyond the border - where missiles would not reach them. Train stations and crossing points were flooded by Ukrainians.
According to the Ukrainian government, almost one hundred thousand Roma have left the country since the beginning of the full-scale war. These people became refugees abroad. Many of them sought refuge in Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Moldova, but not all were able to find it. RFE/RL will visit these countries to find out how they received Roma people who, like the rest of the Ukrainians, fled the war.
